The first caboose you check out is a former Missouri Pacific Home-Built caboose. These were built at their shops at Sedalia. They were updated in the late 60's and had their roofwalks removed, radio added, etc. Seems to be number 13438. The one that says 'South Shore' on it was built for the Santa Fe. Not as familiar with Santa Fe cabooses as I am MP cabooses.

Enjoyed seeing these old girls...they are definently savable right now, but moving them can be VERY expensive, about the same as moving a house....so unless you can get one ultra-cheap (free?) you might think twice. Good luck and keep us posted!

I grew up along the tracks in my home town. The line was the old Missouri Kansas Texas line (MKT). We were close enough that our house would shake as the train went by. And yes, they still had cabooses.

Awesome!!!! That one caboose was an former Santa Fe but was bought by the South Shore that operates from Indiana to Chicago via trackage rights on the former Illinois Central Electric line ( Now Metra ) for the electric commute trains and one of the last interurban lines. They also have freight trains that are pulled by EMD diesel locomotives and interchange with the Norfolk Sothern in Gary Indiana. The other caboose is too rusted to see what it was.

Really love old cabooses. Thank you for this look-see. Their purpose originally was to have observers at the rear of the train to keep an eye on things as they traveled. Don't know if that was mandated by the law, the RR companies, or the unions, but most likely the unions since I always heard those jobs were "featherbedded," meaning unnecessary but demanded by the unions (and the RR companies were successful in getting rid of them eventually -- with them went the caboose). The really cool old ones had the observers' spot on floor level in a multi-windowed bow in the middle on either side (not like these with the "upper level" observers' perches). They would observe down the sides of the train, not from the top. Whenever you saw one of these, usually with the observer hanging his arm out the window in warm weather, you could always count on a wave back if you waved at him -- quite a thrill for a youngster.

It would be nice if you would have researched the info in your video, first the caboose was phased out in 1985 - 86 not in the 1950's, second the caboose was the conductors office where he did all the paper work for the train and third he monitored the air brake line pressure. The conductor didn't move into the locomotive until the caboose was phased out when the railroads started using the train rear end device that monitors the brake line pressure and transmits data to the locomotive. The stove you saw used oil for heat not wood.

Thanks for the video. I've been in a caboose before. Not that big. I had no idea that they came already set up with living appliances. Way cool..

I don't know the history, but I think these are owned by the Walking Horse Railroad in Shelbyville. Many years ago, they offered a short-lived excursion train, so maybe they were to be part of that.

I know where you are but I won't say for the sake of them being left alone. They've been there since at least the 90's. As mentioned in another comment there was a short excursion ride but when it went defunct they abandoned a Alcoa diesel and two coaches. Some a**holes burned the coaches and I imagine they tried to burn that caboose as well. I wish a museum would take them as of now those tracks still lead to a main line.

cool find, thanks for sharing. BTW, the stove is an oil stove, not a wood/coal stove.

The first caboose is labeled for the south shore line, and the paint leads me to belive it was bought from the at&sf (now bnsf)

I do hope these get preserved but if in the next few years they don’t get salvaged id love to buy the Santa Fe caboose and restore it at the nearby tourist railroad in California. I hope they get saved but if they don’t i want to try and save one.

The cabooses stopped being used in the late 90s with the invention of the FRED (Flashing Rear End Device), and it was breakmen who would use cabooses for things like paperwork and not so much rest. Both cabooses appear to be former Santa Fe wide-vision cabooses. Well thanks for sharing it with us! Really cool what you find and share with us!

Fred has been around since the early 80’s. I have an old VHS video of the Rock Islands last trains picking up cars after Bankruptcy. There were a few with a Fred on the rear.

@@MFXdump yes indeed my father worked for the Rock Island .....the last 6 months branches used flags and some road jobs had a red flashing light....however they were just a flashing light and not a real EOT....there were many cabooses out of service with defects....over 700 locomotives and only 113 running at shutdown.

The end of caboose use was actually started by the Florida east coast railroad after the big strike ended and trains started to 2 man crews on their trains the first trains to stop using cabooses on the fec were trailer on flat car trains tofc and cofc container on flat car trains eventually all fec trains stopped using cabooses also the use of concrete ties on the railroad track's use was started by the fec ry as for the caboose name it depended on what railroad you were on as to the caboose was called as they had many different names like cabin, hack, crummy, and my favorite name waycar and of course caboose.
