In the late 80s, I went to a hip hop DJ festival in San Francisco. This guy had a wall of 12 inch vinyl records screwed down on it. Like 20 records or so. They all had a bunch of white marks on them. He had the cartridge in his hand on a long cable. The needle assembly has little rubber rollers on it, I guess to protect the needle. He started a drum computer. The crowd got crazy. He walked up to the wall full of marked records and went crazy. The wall was covered in felt and the records could spin under his touch. He rocked out some awesome riffs.

I’ve actually done some of this before. With the loose tone arm, you can read fingerprints, fabrics, wood, and some non- smooth surfaces like telex on an amp or whatever. Different fabrics and woods have different sounds depending on the surface texture.
@rays7805Ай бұрын
They did a Mythbusters investigation, "Pottery Record". They said that what people used to do in the '60s, for fun, was melt some glass to create a rounded tip, and then attach that to their tonearm needle, so they could rub it against anything and get sounds. I can't find a guide, but if you can track down the episode, it might get you going in a good direction.

Get a felt slip mat, its what djs use to be able to easily move the disc back and forth, scratching much easier that way
@cooloutcoexistАй бұрын
That double pickup is cool and sort of in sync too, which is logical but also wild. You should get a bunch of those to prep the whole piano for the most weird and unique piano overdrive.
@tjaybrown420Ай бұрын
I'm really scared for the legs of the piano lmao, what a beautiful machine!
@SwenglishАй бұрын
Wild idea: Tape play/record heads on a record player. 8 inch floppy disk (removed from casing). Would it work? Floppy drive read/write heads might also be worth considering. Maybe some kind of tiny rubber wheel (lego?) to keep from scraping the disc too much. The lack of a groove might make for some really weird non-linear sound recording and playback.

if you made extra holes in the corners of the top of the deck that you could slot the freehand pickup into, you could have two pickup on different parts of the same vinyl with either both playing forwards/backwards or each playing in opposite directions!
@Ringlefinch-e7uАй бұрын
Do you mean the good old Photoplayer ? The central instruments in a photoplayer were a piano and percussion; some machines also added pipe organs and methods for manually creating sound effects. Like a player piano, the photoplayer played music automatically by reading piano rolls (rolls of paper with perforations), but the photoplayer could hold two rolls: one that would play while the other was prepared. Common sound effects included gun-shots, bells and drums, which were generated by pulling chains called "cow-tails". Some photoplayers feature electric sound effects, such as sirens, automobile horns, and other oddities. A photoplayer operator had to load the paper rolls, start the machine and add the manual sound effects and percussion using the cow-tails.

having one pick up in front of the other in the same groove, you'd have an awesome delay going on. that was a fun video!
@simonairey8982Ай бұрын
Really interesting stuff. I am interested to see what more you can do when you have extra cartridges. If you get/make a slip mat, it makes it much easier to move the record back and forth without resistance. It is essentially just a piece of felt that sits on top of the turntable under the record.
@TheVirakahScaleАй бұрын
Now all you gotta do is fill your guitar with Plaster, Tape that tone arm to the top, and you'll have a great solid-body body electric!

Idea: take some quarter inch tape, make a recording, cut into foot long lengths and glue them side by side on a board to make a foot square panel. Now take the record/playback hear from a reel to reel taper recorder out of the case, extend the wires, and scrub the head over the tape in random directions. Record or sample the outut.

A friend of mine had the idea of making a turntable with about 7arms/styluses and sampling it, back in the early 2000s. I thought the idea was a little bit far fetched and now here you are bringing it to life, some 20 years later. Outstanding! What about an arm with several pickups and independent leads so they span the width of the record? Anyway, looking forward to hearing more of this cos I think you really have completed your wacky and wonderful piano corner of wierdness.
