Damage dealt increases exponentionally with Combat Strength. 100 CS difference should be about 1600 damage. 200 CS difference is 89400 damage. 1000 CS difference? 7060000000000000000 damage. Just a liiiitle bit over the integer limit. The most that can be handled is around 450 CS difference, but you'd want to save some space for actual kills.

So the real question is what is the Max difference that a Vampire can have in values to not go over the integer limits. If they use a standard integer field that maxes out at 65536 for the 16 bits, then anything past about oh 190 in CS difference should fall flat on it's face.

@@Illya9999 If you've worked with computers as long as I have .. you remember when 2 to 16 was the max size. Many systems have adopted to 32 or 64 bit now. But back when they rubbed rocks together to create heat, 16 bits was amazing! And integers were limited to 65536 (or 32768 if one bit was used for + or - signing). And we still find people to this day using code that limits items to the old 16 bit standards when they fail to properly define variable usage.

ALSO I'm assuming that there's some overflow whenever the vampire reaches 1k combat strength, a decimal point is moved on accident, who actually knows but i was so surprised when i just bonked the city LMAO. I mean it's fine because there's really no environment where you're going to encounter the bug at the end of the video, but it made me laugh anyways.

I think the bug is connected to how damage scales exponentially with strength difference. The resulting damage might have exceeded some kind of numerical limit (my bet is on 10^38, the single precision float limit).

The ‘bug’ came about because in a Civ 1 conquest game, players usually saved India/Gandhi for last (since he had the lowest aggression rating, would never declare war on the player, and was easy to get gold from via traders). So when the player finally declared war, India was usually well past the ‘modern era’ and Gandhi would already have nukes as part of his standard army (which wasn’t odd since nukes were classified as air-units). Still, the idea of Gandhi using Nukes was paradoxical enough that years later, people mis-remembered it as a glitch. The current equivalent would be saying that Gilga-bro is glitched because when you attack him he always has nuclear submarines… while completely ignoring the fact you always make an early alliance with him and as a result conquer him last.

Also, the reason you're seeing so many barbs is because someone borked the spawn algorithm with the Barb expansion. They used to operate in a very defined way (Scout your city, spawn 2 melee units and a ranged unit). If they were left alone, they would spawn new units occasionally. Now, there's no rhyme or reason. They spawn whenever and whatever they want. This is especially annoying with coastal barb camps, as they'll crap out boats ad infinitum and your tools to fight them are pretty limited until you get Catapults (because Archer-class units get a strength penalty against boats and Quadriremes have a range of 1). If you're playing a coastal civ, it's usually a good strat to build 2 Galleys, one to defend your territory (since you're far more limited in options) and one to explore. If you run up on a coastal barb camp, you're pretty much forced to avoid it, because it'll produce boats faster than you can kill them and you run the risk of getting cycle attacked.

Great video. Thank you for sharing and for your incredible devotion to the cause. I don't think I could have survived the tedium myself, but thanks to you, I still get to see the results. A couple years back, I did something less spectacular on a Scythia playthrough. I think my main vampires hit 154 and 138 combat strength. I had to intentionally delay victory until the late future era because I wanted to see a vampire one-shot a GDR, and the AI was in no hurry to send one out to die. Eventually, though, one did come swaggering out, and I got my satisfaction. It was a bit tedious, but it was worth it.

D.A.V.E. 3 had 179 combat strength (75 base +104 units died near vampire) -- Towards the end it looked like combat strength went up to 205.

The solution is to put a subject stack limit of 50 or so as a hard cap; however, last time I checked the ability was not conventional at all so I don't know if there is a regular modifier to even put a subject stack limit on.

I didn't really show it but I used hippolyta for helping the vamps take cities, as long as the city has a tiny little bit of damage dave 3 could take it with one shot. So I would just attack with Dave 3, then use hippoltya to make Dave 3 attack again and take a city haha

hey boes, mali is my favorite civ, how do u deal with the fact that it takes 10,000 years to build that first holy site in each city? in the lategame when your holy sites can say [70 TURNS] next to them it becomes a real hassle, even if you're in the clear afterwards. send help

honestly it's pretty hard, you kind of have to just suffer and recognize that if you can get that early golden age you can just spam settlers with faith via monumentality - otherwise just accept the suffering for the first like 80 turns hahaha
