I GAMBLED On An ABANDONED HONDA CT90 and LOST!!

I had big hopes for this one because it was cheap and pretty much complete. Things did not work out the way I planned...

I’m restoring a 1970 CT90 now. Engine and transmission are good but someone had tampered with the wiring. I have repaired the wiring, installed new foot pegs, kickstand, front forks, tires and tubes. Still need new headlight bucket, chain and sprockets. I love these old Hondas.

I lost on a similar project, i soent 3 days chasing wiring only to finally accept low compression. I had lost the adapter for my gauge and really felt it was electrical (stater, pickup coil and wiring itself) and or timing. Sometimes we hit a home run, more times than not in my experience. Then every now and then we get a roach Great videos, im loving them.

Just rebuilt one in worse condition, whoever rebuilt it before used silicone for the case/cylinder gasket and it blocked off the oil passage to the top end. Had rust and boiled oil crust everywhere, nothing that was supposed to move was moving. Full tear down, soaked/scrubbed everything, new gaskets and a piston. Took 3 weeks but I only had about 30 minutes to an hour a day actually working on it. And only about $50 in parts. Hardest part on these engines is getting the timing right. Lol

I did an 81 ct110 a few years ago. It didn’t even roll when I got it. My wife thought I bought a lemon but I made it lemonade. Getting the timing tight was the last thing I had to do and it was a pain. Thank you KZbin for the help. LOL

Still a great pickup. you can get parts for these for so cheap lots are even available on amazon lol. Probably cheaper just to do an engine swap and convert it to 12v than rebuilding the engine. Also look into the Vermont loophole to get a title. Since its under 500cc you don't need a cop inspection just have to fill out the paper work correctly and they'll send you registration and vermont registration is considered a title.

These little Hondas have a reputation for being bulletproof but that sometimes means people neglect & abuse them. I think you made the right choice. Who knows, in the future you may stumble across a good cheap engine.

You never know. It looked good from the outside. I also restore vintage bikes. Currently doing a '72 Motorsport XL250. Parts are hard to find and $$$.
