What sets habitica apart from the rest for me, is the social aspect. If it is just me, cheating/ just not doing the things is no problem. But because i know with parties and challenges other player do it correctly, i do not want to cheat. While Habtica does a lot of cool things, I think it does need an overhaul or a 2.0. Cool elements: Guilds (You can connect to people interested in the same topic and you can just browse and join any guild and converse.) Parties You can have a party wih friends or like minded people. You gain a group chat and the ability to work on quests together. (while questing you damage bosses by doing your tasks and the boss damages the whole group if anyone neglects them. Participation is optional and if you are on a break you can sleep in the guesthouse.) Leveling By doing tasks you get XP and gold. (By neglecting them or doing negative habits you lose HP. XP mean levels which mean more stat points and access to better gear. Gold means you can purchase gear and healing potions. But also custom rewards as you can set "1 episode of show X for 10 Gold" and so on. At the same time, you can set a task to 4 difficulties, which determine the rewarded XP and gold. (This and the fact that you need no proof to tick off a task means cheating is easy, but you are really cheating yourself. Your party does not care about the same level or how long the boss takes, only if they get damage.) Classes All the classes cater to different "play"-styles, which is neat, but also can be harmful. So choose wisely. Warrior: Good attack and defense. Useful for fighting bosses. Is pretty much core mechanics of habitica. Mage: More mana and group support. Helps everyone to do more damage and use skills more often. Levels faster for some reason. Kind of habitica on speed for when you want more level ups. Healer: Stamina and Mana. Can heal hthemselves or the whole party. You can heal yout fuck ups, but you still saw them at least. Ultimately does no damage and helps prevent losing a level due to death sometimes. Rogue: Earn more gold, find more loot. Just cheat, because your skills let you skip tasks and never feel the "punishment". Maybe good for gambling and for people demotivated by HP-loss (but then I just don't have dailies or negative habits, instead of adding more work to using the app and getting in the way of myself). Struggles: Cool quests and gear costs real money (micro-transactions). Way better than having ads, which would be damaging to the whole point. But still, it is sad, that you don't get to play the nicer quests if you don't invest or win challenges regularly. Quests serve no real point. Sometimes there is gear as a reward, but this is just not that interesting. The quests also have no real enticing story. It is basically a pixel art you do damage to (which only mages and warriors do decently) or you have to randomly find something doing tasks (which the rouge is best in, so far as our last quest was soloed by the one we had) To me, this is just not motivating and I could not care less If I am part of the most recent quest or not. Communication is not great. Be it within guilds or parties, you have one chat history (with all damage notices in it too) for the group. You can @someone and respond, but overall the bigger the guild the more meaningless any post and lost any conversation happening over a longer period. This does not further conversation, which is not the main goal (seeing as chatting actually keeps you from other things) but it is a great tool, that keeps you within the app. Most communication of the bigger guilds happenes on discord, where it is also way easier to keep links and info to the different challenges. Easy design makes it actually hard! to use. Habitica is NOT suitable for extensive to do list (How nice, that challenges tend to sometimes add 30 ToDos.). They are not very well sorted, turn red within a short time, even if there is no deadline and automatically give better rewards the longer they are not done, rewarding procrastination or adding them just REALLY early. Sorting them is a nightmare and takes ages. Tagging can help, but is also clunky. Conclusion: A nice idea and nostalgic approach, that does not make great use of psychology, is not highly customizable and ultimately I always lose motivation after a few weeks and rather use my BuJo, that records data forever, does not force the daily habits reset on me, if I forgot to tick off my dailies one day and writing something down feels more like an achievement than the jingle, that I have switched off, cause public? The app is a hit or miss and you need to already be motivated and organized, cause it does not help that much with either. Gving it a try may be great or you just delete the app again and go on with your life.

I've been using it for years and it has definitely helped a bit. I recommend anyone trying it out to consider the different options for setting up Tasks and how you might perceive interacting with them. I had for ages set it up from the angle of what i *should* be doing so i hadn't ever used Negative Habits. But now i realize that it gets the message home much better to have to manually own up to having done something.. suboptimal. For me it's much easier to just gloss over not picking up the Positive Habit of "didn't stay in bed to check sites on the phone". I'm much better at conducting myself such that i don't have to click on the Negative Habit of "*did* stay in bed with the phone".

Don't overthink it, no one's chasing you. Start at your own pace like adding 1 to 3 things into Habits (day 1), To do's (day 2), Dailies (day 3), then try to learn about the reward system and other things to motivate you even more over the time. In my case, I use Notion to keep all of my goals, milestones, notes, etc and I just started using Habitica to achieve all of that so I really don't want to complicate it that much. Btw, you saw it too complicated is because he making a review video about Habitica so he had to go quick of course :) Read this comment kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKCTkpewq56nb5o&lc=Ugz3YcoWUa21XrcsaWx4AaABAg

I started using Habitica a few days ago, and it’s been insanely helpful already! Your video helped me to get a better grasp on the program. I’ve currently only used the app, which has been an excellent tool for me as an autistic person. It makes me feel like tasks have meaning, which is something I’m desperately missing in my life right now. I also found Obsidian through your channel! I just started using it today and I’m already entranced. I’m considering buying the sync subscription in order to have my vault on my phone, too. I’m also using the IMF system. Do you think it’s worth the money? Apologies for this being somewhat off-topic.
@itsjohnmavrick Жыл бұрын
im glad to hear it's genuinely been motivating you to whats important to you and that i've introduced you to these apps :D if you can't afford the subscription, you can use a third party cloud provider like icloud or onedrive, which I have a video on kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaq5lIiEgdhreJI IMF is a bit outdated, I would look into PARA method or ACCESS folder method, and this wasn't off topic.

@@itsjohnmavrick I had heard that was possible during some of my research, but I was a little uncertain if it would actually work. I’ll check out the video on it, thanks so much!! And, honestly, I’ve gotten a bit attached to IMF in the short time I’ve been using it, and I really enjoy the dewey-decimal-like organization system. I really like the concept of using numbers for organization in that way. Is PARA or ACCESS similar in that regard?

I didn't get it at first, but I started off with adding a task that I already do on a daily basis like brushing my teeth and getting rewarded with coins, exp, and better stats on my health. The coins are simply used to reward myself with watching a youtube video. E.g. 10 coins for 1 youtube video. What started off simple is now my day to day app to check dozens of tasks that I procrastinate upon. And I can break up the the task into sub tasks to make it feel easier.
