I Gave Minecraft's Paintings a MASSIVE Overhaul!

I used AI to generate custom paintings in #minecraft . I learned about the history of Minecraft's paintings recently and it inspired me to expand on the system using a 1.19 #datapack to add custom paintings.

I was looking for this comment! Using AI is a shame because it is disrespectful to actual artists who need commissions to live (me included)! I don't judge whimzee too harshly bc it is a cool project and it'd be expensive to hire artists, but it'd be awesome if he revisited this project with actual artists in the future! I would be open to contributing if he ever chose to do it :)

@@cannedwater8819 Because there is nothing original. Also using AI doesn't require any talent. If you sample music, you need to add your own spin to it, but with AI everything is stolen :/ IDK if I explained this well.

Talking about art while using AI feels a little sketchy personally. However, in this case where you did it because you didn't feel like drawing 27 different paintings without previous experience, I totally get it. As someone who enjoys making art (even though I'm not really good at it yet) I think that being under the impression that art is elitist is very harmful both to those who may want to get into art, and to the art world itself. It is very heartbreaking to know that there's people out there who think that they just don't "get art", while actually they just dislike some random style, or feel indifferent about it. Because of this false perception that they're being excluded from the art world, these people may even start hating art, and insulting people who are just conveying their thoughts and emotions into paper. With the recent improvement of AI, some of these people are promoting the use of it as a replacement to artists, basically saying: "why should we put effort into anything if I can just tell a program to do it for me?" but what these people don't get is that the reason artists exist is because of the process. People who draw, make movies, or do whatever, do it because they like doing it. They don't see their past paintings and say: "I am so good at drawing!", in fact, most artists think their work is bad. They put all of their soul into each stroke, in turn representing life as they see it. That's what art is about, not about pretty backgrounds, or a good color scheme, or even about the meaning. It's about who makes it: it's a way to forever portray the human race, and it's beautiful. So my point is: you're of course allowed to dislike certain styles and art movements, but don't think that you don't get art or aren't an artist because of that. From playing minecraft to appreciating how a worker is building up a brick wall, there ain't an excuse to say that you dislike art as a whole. And sure, you may not like creating things, but please don't ruin the fun for those who do: be respectful and kind, and do whatever you enjoy doing!

AI art can never replace real humans. It won't have the quality you want, it'll have many errors, and it might not even create what you ask for.. I have nothing against AI art, it's a fun thing to partake in and laugh at the wonky mistakes it makes, the only real harm is when you claim it's better than real artists; I'm an artist myself, I've tried out AI art literally for the memes (sending wonky pictures to my friends for us to laugh over together) or for a little inspiration

​@@testerwulf3357 yes, AI art can be terrible and funny, but there are already game studios in China that have started using AI to create images for them and then sometimes paying a real person to fix up the image, instead of paying a real person to do the whole job. So it is taking work away from real artists already and it will only get better and push more artists out of more industries

I love your work! All of it. The way, you are putting so much effort in all of this: Coding, adding some easter eggs and doing all this with a reason. I am from germany and we've got a quite fitting qoute: "in etwas sein Herzblut stecken", which is translatable to "putting your hearts blood into something". It tells, you are so into this stuff, you actually sacrifising things to do this. In your case its gonna be your time. I am sure, all this is pretty time consuming. @@cannedwater8819 When sampling is done in music, it's usually to create a unique genre of music. Music made with sampled tracks and sounds is not the same as music made without. And that's not a bad thing, it's a unique form of music. But with AI art that are taking from creators, to make things that are already being made, they aren't making a unique art form through a unique medium, they are purposely stealing to create what already exists.

You could make a painting frame first to set the size/shape, then add paper to make it a canvas. Make the system so that any combination of paint can be linked to a particular painting, but if you do a combination with no link you get random.

I think one of the beauty’s of Minecraft’s paintings and Minecraft in general, is its forced simplicity. Having more pixels in a painting, Or if the blocks were smaller… Then each block and each pixel you place would have less significance in its intent. Minecraft truly is a less is more game. I’d really like to see your approach to adding more paintings with the traditional pixel restrictions, there just is no way mojang will ever do something like this with the resolution bump.

Go check of your desert update one! I made a massive suggestion, pls consider. Anyway, why not just update all textures to 16 per block to 20. Edit: do this by place the 20x20 grid on a app. Then put the texture on top on get the squares to find the average colour.

No, that's for additive mixing, like with computer displays. However with dyes, you're absorbing light, not adding it (unlike LEDs), so it's subtractive mixing. The RYB (Red, Yellow, Blue) are the primary colors of the color wheel taught in schools and used for painting, and CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Back) being used for printing.

As an artist, I have to say I don’t agree with the use of AI art, but I can’t deny the charm that the slightly incomprehensible generations of a small model like craiyon hold. To me, generative AI is at its best when it truly looks computer made; not replicating human work, but childishly imitating us to produce truly unique results. In this way, AI turns into a genre.

Does anyone else feel like the paintings being made by AI is a massive drawback to this? I mean, he was talking and showing all this stuff about actual art but then just... uses AI? The least personal and creative thing a person can do? Not to mention all the ethical and legal issues that are present with the tech (the AIs straight up steal art, no joke look it up). I just really feel like even if you're an amateur or don't think your art is 'Good enough' you should still try and create something yourself you know? Pixel art would've been a good way to go about it. By using AI it just becomes... hollow. I know there was no thought or effort behind the pieces and I just end up feeling a hollow disappointment when looking at the art. There's just no soul in them.
