One thing to make it more realistic is to completely remove the clock. Each team gets 9 total drives in the game. The drive starts with kickoff and the drives end with turnover on downs, turnover, field goal(1 point) or touchdown (3 points). Defensive scores are removed from game. Makes the game far more like baseball

The obvious solution to mending the division problems is to add 4 expansion teams. With some shifting around, you could move the Bills and Ravens to the AFC and NFC East respectfully for balancing and geographical reasons. Now there would be one NFC team and 3 AFC teams that need to be accounted for. The NFC West team could go to St. Louis given the Rams' history. The AFC West team could go to a city like San Antonio/Austin and the two Central teams could be given to Birmingham, Memphis, Omaha, etc. 6 teams in each division.

The only issue (other than the fatigue) with the NFL playing a 162 game schedule plus playoffs, would needing a second stadium for both Los Angeles and New York based teams. You can have them alternate home and away during the regular season. However if they somehow make it to the playoffs, a second stadium would be necessary. You could also have games played every other night, like the to in the NHL and NBA. MLB playoffs last about 1 month, while the NBA and NHL playoffs last 2 months.
