How do you think we can grow the game? What ways have you felt excluded from golf or uncomfortable on the course? I want to know!

Paige Spiranac , well Paige first the cost of many courses is way too high. And golf equipment is way too expensive too. Somehow we have to lower the prices, I like you 3 hole idea maybe for $5. Also he play is way too slow, probably like you said from watching too much tv. People who can't hit the ball 100 yards are waiting for someone 300 yards in front of them and not hitting. Maybe in putting we can give each other more short puts to hurry the game or like you said pick up on a bad hole... Will try and think of more ways.. When we play with more beginner golfers we play scrambles and best ball which really helps the game along

I think the biggest impediment is cost. The only way to address cost is to halve the course with shorter holes (and maybe less holes). I honestly think that the game should diverge into a shorter course requiring more finesse (say 12 par 3's with more hazards because they require less maintenance) and longer traditional courses requiring strength and agility. Un-Tiger proof courses and tiger proof courses. You can make a chip and putt 12 hole par 3 course for half (or less) the acreage of an elite course and with less upkeep and maintenance costs. That could make it affordable. If you want to increase pace, have multiple cups per green or multiple greens per fairway with a row of trees between.

The first place to start is the pro shop. I have been made uncomfortable many times by the person behind the counter. Generally they are a former/wannabe player who should not be in CUSTOMER service! They should have truly friendly, warm people that are all about making you feel welcomed and appreciated. Instead it's usually some dude bro sizing people up and making you feel judged(it's like when you have a food server who judges you and asks-"bottled or TAP water...that person should not be a food server imo). Same with the "starter" Generally some older man who is more concerned about killing time and getting free golf. Lastly they should not send groups out so close to each other. It's all money driven. Growing the game is a bunch of nonsense. It's about business and not the game. Golf isnt for everyone. It's hard and time consuming. No amount of gadgets, tips, tricks or equipment can fix people.

In my humble opinion, growing up in golf since the mid-80s, times have definitely changed and I feel you are spot on with the issues you bring up. You are awesome Paige and I am glad you brought all of this up because it's not just you who feels this way, its really a lot of people out there too. I would say the number one factor is how expensive golf is. Golf only appeals to the people who can afford it. The equipment today cost a fortune and the green fees are very expensive. Back in the day, I remember it used to cost 18 dollars for a round of golf 18 holes.

Maltby and Snell are doing wonderful things to make golf more available to more people. I got a set of irons with premium shafts and grips built to my specs for under $350.00 and they are AMAZING. Snell makes one of the best balls out there for < $30 a dozen. I am so happy with both of these companies and what they are doing for golf! So glad I found them.

Paige - I love your videos....I'm a Marshal at a public course and see a variety of reasons for slow play. One of the biggest is guys playing off the wrong tee, sometimes from the tips when they can barely drive the ball 150-180 yards. Another is guys just standing on the tee box talking and on the greens taking turns lining up every putt like it was the Masters. Our Marshals roam the course and monitor play. One thing we did to speed play was to fill in about 15 sand traps leaving just 12 on the course. Our greens are all elevated and there are natural grass bunkers around the greens. Guys are now spending a lot less time hacking out of the sand. We do offer 9 and 18 hole rates and also twilight rates. Our course also has Free Clinics for beginners (men, women, and youth) conducted by our PGA Pro and Asst. PGA Pro. The purpose is to get new people interested in golf.

For me, if I go to any golf course and the staff treat me like I'm bothering them then that makes me feel like they don't want my business and I go elsewhere. Everyone has bad days but if you work in any type of customer service job, be nice to the customers!!

Completely agree with the points at the start of the video. People today are so focused on themselves that they don't see that what they are doing is actually making the situation worse for everyone else. If people would have more awareness when commenting or arguing about stuff, better discussions would happen and good people, like Paige, wouldn't have to explain obvious things on the Internet. I like the idea of pay by the hole on muni courses. You're right about kids' attention spans. Here's another idea perhaps for private or semi private courses: I think it was Jack Nicklaus who floated the idea of making golf a 12 hole game. The advantage here is that most courses could divide their course into three 6 hole tracks. So people who don't have the time or get tired or whatever, can play 6 holes, most people would likely play 12, and keeners can go for 18. This added flexibility to playing duration would appeal to beginners, one would think. And probably even regulars--- Let's face it: We've all had a round where everything is going wrong, and being able to bail after 6 holes to end the ordeal would have been the humane thing.

I would say to help the game, is create more Par 3 courses, make more 9 hole courses under the lights for those who work crazy hours. Etiquette, don’t put down or snub the beginners, we all were beginners at some point. I’m not keyed for slow play, but there are some who do play slow, those people need to show courtesy and let faster players go through at the next tee box. You have to make the game fun and enjoyable for the new players, or they will give up on it and we lose future players. Make public courses more affordable, and I agree with you Paige, there should not only be a 9 or 18 hole price option, but also a single hole,’or at least a 3 hole price. Some people might want to get in 3 quick holes during the week. Hi Paige. Taught my daughter and son how to swing a golf club before they were 10. Would take the kids to the range, drink coffee near them while they hit balls just for fun, They liked that. At age 10, my son played his first 9 holes and scored 54. But he never took up the game. My daughter had a great swing (she also pitched in baseball), had much athletic ability in golf. But she never tried to play the game as she didn’t see the point. Anyway, as an adult she can still maybe pick up the game - should she ever wish to do so. There are so many choices for activities these days. Good luck with your ideas to grow the game. I will try a little to do my part.

At our club we play “ready golf”. Basically that means hit when you are ready on the tee. Mark your card after teeing off. Be aware off other players behind and in front of you on the course. Your position on the golf course is behind the group in front not in front of the group behind. Keep up the great vlogs xxx Also we need you to come over to Australia and play sometime

Many great points in this video Paige! I wish there were more par 3 courses in my area. Hitting the ball far and straight is hard to do. To get people to enjoy golf, it needs to be fun. I have three nieces that I would LOVE to get into golf. The oldest recently said, "I don't get golf." That's the problem. There need to be more incremental ways to introduce them to the game. For all the issues with dress code, cost, slow play and everything else, step one is to get them to want to try it!

Paige, I've watched a number of your video's now . And my opinion is this -- I would love to see you apply yourself to your golf game and play much more competitive golf . For someone that doesn't play competitive golf for non golfing reasons, the best way for you to make a noise in this snobbish industry ( my opinion ). Hey Paige, I like your thoughts. I especially agree that we need to be better about educating/encouraging new players and losing the condescension. As for cost - I play a little 9-hole in Mesa using very nice clubs I found at local thrifts. Rounds end up costing between $9-15 for 9 holes and my buddy and I usually have a great time. Golf doesn't have to be expensive to be fun. With that said, we also put up with folks who can't play 9 holes without drinking a case of cheap beer and blasting a boom box (even at 7 AM). I think there needs to be an understanding that casual does not mean slovenly and rude. Have a good time - and respect the other golfers on the course.

Another great conversation, love ur style. Topgolf is growing the game. Everyone has fun there no matter how they swing. Women's Day at the course, Family Day, make the staff loosen up. I just don't like going into the pro shop to sign up still. Very unwelcoming unless u know the staff well. Design shorter courses, a par 4 with shorter yardages. Take beginners on the course for 4-5 holes & show them how to play on the course, not just on the driving range. U r correct, u must make golf fun & exciting. I still love golf & wish I could play more with friends & have fun at it.

To change the story on pace of play, I suggest courses offer a refund of 5-10% or a credit of 5-10% toward the next round to groups that finish within the suggested round duration (usually 4-4.5 hours for 18 standard length holes). The cool thing about this is that instead of groups infuriating others on the basis of different paces of play, all groups can collectively strive to finish in a timely (but Not Rushed) manner that has the added bonus of money back in the pocket. If I was an owner of a public course, I would definitely institute this, especially since, marshals have seem to gone out of vogue. I’m in favor of incentivizing positive self-policing of pace of play.

I've worked at a Public Golf Course and it was very inexpensive to play 18 holes, and the course got a lot of play. For pace of play my club has two courses, I find that helps as it certainly reduces the wait times as you can just check before going or ask in the club house which course is quieter on the day

Love it when you are open and honest with your feelings. As far as "growing the game" We need to do everything we can to encourage youth and minority participation. Build putting greens and golf simulators in low income urban schools. Support our local municipal courses. Organize free golf field trips for youth at local courses starving for traffic and attention.. There is a great example in San Diego at Goat Hill. They built a tiny 3 hole course just for kids. No set green fee. Just a donation of your choice. I just bought a friends 7 year old a set of clubs and will be taking him there to have fun. And by fun I mean letting him have fun and not stressing him out about the rules of golf. Instead I will be saying things like, make this put and I'll treat you to an ice cream.

My local championship golf course has opened its doors to junior members. My 12 & 13 year old daughters love golf and hope to get their handicaps this year. There are close to 170 junior boy members and 40 junior girls. This is a big step in the right direction.

I have taken my game to the Country. I am tired of the 5 1/2 hr rounds in the city. Most metro areas have doubled in population size and the number of courses has stayed the same. So, my recommendation is to find a nice place about 100 miles away from where you live and try that course out. Maybe invest in a time-share, rental, or buy a second home to retire to. Life is too short to sit in a golf cart for 5 hours.

How to grow the game. There is a game called Operation 36. The goal is to shoot 36 for 9 holes. If you are a beginner, you might tee off from 75 yards to the pin. Once you shoot 36 for 9 holes, you move back 25 more yards and try to shoot 36 from that distance. Beginners feel more comfortable if they gradually get used to playing a little longer course rather than playing from a tee that is too long for their ability.

My son just started playing the game this last season, playing on his HS team. He is a football and basketball player but so far his experience has been positive. But, I can see where some folks can be less inviting to the game. I want to him to continue playing golf, since I told him any other possible career he has in either football or basketball is short lived (likely only through the collegiate level). Golf he can play well into old age. I saw one way to help him grow his game is get him one on one lessons. Yes, I know that may not be available to everyone ($$$) but for him it has been a great thing. He is already athletic but he needed to understand more about the efficiency of the swing. I do wish lessons were a little less expensive, because I think they are great way to grow one’s game.

Pace of play is certainly important. I think there is a lot to it to play shorter courses, with equipment not going as far as it does today. I love playing with hickory clubs, playing tees which makes the course somewhere around 5500 yards. Usually takes just a bit over 3 hours to play 18 holes. Keep up the good work!

Spot on with your suggestions with getting more folks golfing. 100% I honestly don't see how one could speed up the game, besides a 2 put limit or best ball with big groups. Cost is a big factor. Excellent video Paige, as usual. I find it amusing, and definitively frustrating, that golf really hasn't seemed to change in 48 years I've been playing. When I was a junior in the 70s I was abused by members for the crime of winning a weekend competition. Yelled at when I picked up my trophies. The Club Captain of Eastlakes GC in Sydney attempted to cheat me out of a Monthly Medal until I called him on it in front of the Presentation.... it makes me laugh now, so many years later. I don't believe it was justified then, and it is not justified today. Keep up the good work, I attempt to smooth the path for other golfers as much as I can.

One more thing: Having some kind of mentor in golf is huge. My parents were immigrants and golf wasn't part of their world. But when I was around 9, my friend's dad loaded 3 of us brats into his station wagon and took us golfing. He just gave us a few pointers, but just basically let us have fun. Later on, a high school buddy who was a regular golfer took me golfing numerous times. On my own, I definitely would have felt awkward going to a golf course, but just being with a "golfer" totally took that away. So you "golfers" out there: Take a non-golfer under your wing for a round or 3. (and go easy on the advice). They'll never forget it!

Years ago there were many small golf shops in my city. They are all gone. There is only a Golftown. Most iron sets are over $1,000. Drivers are $500+ and wedges $180+. Not sure where beginners go to get reasonably priced sets.

I played a course once where they had a very large and catchy sign by the first tee that no one could miss that no one could say they did not see. The sign stated reminders to a few of the important responsibilities all players must abide by.. Keeping pace with the group in front of you was in bold lettering as well Divots & ball marks and respect to the coarse and others. I don't remember the exact wording it was 35 years ago but Paige, it was awesome because it worked. This should be a standard for all public course's. A well made sign Disneyland like that will dress up the tee with these reminders. By doing so this leaves a snowball effect of players who then feel free to remind any one who does not abide. It brings out the watch dog in us. This is what I believe will work best. It reminds some who need to be reminded while it helps educate others and the ones who don't need it think its great and will help support the cause. I always look for some type of sign at public course's and what you find is what you have to find and if you find it its never on the first tee or on a driving range target where you have to see it. Bold lettering less said simple English leaves a photo impression in the mind up to 35 years anyway lol , no it really does. I like your views on respect and how to treat others on the course. My home town had 4 public courses and you could buy an unlimited pass each season. That was great because you have to play at lot to be any good, but playing a lot costs a lot if you pay per play.

Cost of golf is the #1 factor keeping people out of golf. By the time you buy clubs (fitted to the person), golf balls, clothing as you state in your video and green fees, the cost is so great most people decide they can’t afford to enter into the sport/hobby. I entered in very slowly as I was given an old outdated set of clubs. Unfortunately, being 6’ 5”, the clubs were not anywhere close to fitting me. I used them though and stuck with it at the cheapest golf course until I could afford a cheap fitted set of clubs. It was still expensive! Once a new person starts playing, it is a little intimidating on the course. I was yelled and cussed out on a number of occasions due to my slower play and not fully understanding the etiquette on a course. It would be good to have a better tolerance for new players on the cheapest courses in a particular area. This would allow new players to continue improving in the game and keep them from being chased off from the sport/hobby. On another topic...here’s an idea for your series of videos on KZbin. How about once or possibly several times a month you pick 3 beginner players and golf with them. You could assist in giving them a lesson on the course for your KZbin series. Just a thought! Anyway, love your channel and have learned a great deal over the past year and a half.

I haven’t played a round over 4:15 yet this year, so I don’t have great solutions there, but every time I’ve been slowed down this year, it’s usually because of kids or obvious new players in front of me who are both struggling to play and wasting a lot of time... but then that gets back to the accessibility element. Paige, I have seen golf courses that have two holes on a green. One is the traditional one. The other is an oversized hole that uses a white and orange checkered flag. Speed up play by taking less putts per round. Have you seen these oversized holes?

A few things - have some courses be wise enough to convert to a shorter yardage, more wide open concept with fewer hazards - would make the game more enjoyable for beginners/seniors and possibly families for teaching the kids. Get rid of the re-tee on out of bounds on public courses...take the penalty, drop and hit where it went out and move on. Reduce the amount of sand bunkers and convert to grass bunkers or at minimum only sand base and grass walled. Many people don't rake the bunkers after they play out and many that do take forever doing it. Courses not only need starters but rangers for pace also. There are a few courses around here that have implemented that strategy and it has helped pace tremendously!!

You can cobble together a perfectly good set of clubs for under $100. I personally have two $5 clubs from a local Goodwill in my bag. If you are a 20-handicapper and think that a $1,500 set of clubs is the solution, you are smoking the good stuff!

I bought a bunch of Ben Hogan shirts at W Mart for fifteen dollars. There's deals to be had for guys if you look.I walk when it's doable, that saves $. Now, the price of clubs has gotten up there.. Some courses that are busy develop a bit of an attitude (unwelcoming) or have grouchy rangers. They also sometimes make leagues a priority and make us feel like an afterthought.

And the league thing...I know that is how courses make their money, but I've had courses tell me they couldn't let me on because their league will be starting in 2 hours and I only wanted to play a quick 9. We have a couple bars around my area that have simulators in them. No dress code, each simulator has a four person bar at it where you can eat and drink. 4 person 18 holes takes about two hours. No walking, no searching for balls and you can play some legendary courses

my elementary and middle school would take us bowling for a week each year as part of PE class. I stuck with it for 25 years and counting. Top Golf blowing up the last few years in big cities is great---it incorporates the technology and phone app, which seduces the kids. this could become a standard field trip for schools if the two started talking.

I know where I live in Germany to make it more accessible for everyone!! In the US that is not a problem so much!! It has gotten better here but could be easier. Maybe ease up on the dress code a bit not completely!! I totally agreee with your comment on the dress code for public courses!! More Par 3 courses would help too!! Great video Paige!!

Agree that golf is too expensive and elitist. I’d like to see courses here in AZ give a resident rate like they do in other states. Torrey Pines in CA for example was $35 for local players and $150 for out of state players. In AZ the tourists have just driven a lot of rates through the roof so that most residents can only afford to play in the summer when it’s 110 degrees.

Teaching people to be AWARE and let others play through would be helpful. If you have an open hole and people are waiting behind you pull up and let them through! Hit and get to the side or wait at the tee. Courtesy is a major part of this game. Don'rt be a hog! :)

Went golfing for the first time in 15 years yesterday and did this. I was rusty as hell, and there was a twosome behind me on the previous green that were obviously much better than me. After hitting a terrible tee shot, decided to stay behind the tee box and let them play through once they were done with their hole. Worked out better for everybody, since they got to keep up their pace, and I didn't have to feel nervous about people behind me.

Paige - The future of the game is in programs like "First Tee" and teaching kids. Maybe enticing club Pro's to be more out there in the communities and working on the publicity side would also help.

For price/pace of play golf carts should't cost per rider. I've had many times where golf cart prices get too high making me/friends walk the course which slows play

Who you play with is huge. I quit the game 20 plus years ago because the guys I always played with who were very laid back and informal had moved or quit the game due to being very busy with new families and everyone I played with after that were so uptight. Most beginners or weekend amateurs get their positive experience from hitting good shots and feeling relaxed. That doesn't happen when they duff a shot off the tee 50 feet on a par 5 and they're made to play it because their partner acts like it's the PGA championship. Now I'm playing again and at 52 if someone's too uptight for me to enjoy my round I don't play with them again. I also play quite a bit in the late evenings by myself when the course is empty and really enjoy that time, no pressure and my pace makes it relaxing and enjoyable as it should be. So, if your just starting the game and you're not having fun, examine whether it's the game or the people you're playing with that just are not fun.

I think pace of play is just fine, but I think having 10” or 15” cup days/tourneys would be a very fun addition to the game. 👍🏻

If I bring non golfing friends onto the course for a round, I make it as laid back and fun as humanly possible. I'm talking bluetooth speaker in the cart, ready golf, flagstick in, mulligans for days, improved lies. Basically the exact opposite of the traditional, stuck up ways to play golf.

Hey Paige, such a great subject but that's so much to unpack all at once. Growth and Rules, need to start with the USGA. Pace of Play is the responsibility of the player. Hit the shots that keep you on the fairway, not the ones that leave you in the woods. Course Attitude reflects Course Leadership. Buy used equipment. Great Video Paige ! Remain Awesome!

Some good points, the main changes needed in my view are shorter games for beginners 6-9 holes etc. in order to get used to the rules. Dress code I think a collar is needed for gents, t-shirts are no, its not a rock gig. Slow play, simple things like picking the ball up when you are out of the hole and putting your cart next to the next tee before you putt!!!

My greatest times in golf was teaching my Sons the game and I am now Blessed to be able to teach my Grandsons & Grandaughters the game as well. My Prescription for how to Grow the game of Golf; More Academy Courses for youngsters, more 9 Hole Courses for Golfers with limited time & Seniors with limited energy. Ekd, the new OOB rules allow a drop on the fairway lateral to where the ball is believed to have come to rest! There is a 2 stroke penalty. Most people SHOULD take this option and not risk hitting a second shot OOB!!!

I really care about growing the game especially in my community. I have a challenge because I started about a year ago. I'm definitely obsessed so I feel passion about growing the community especially for ladies and younger aged people. I do have a few ideas about how we could demonstrate in video(s) how to help, encourage, and draw attention to these issues instead of focusing on what we don't want to happen. Reach out to me if you want to discuss. I started bringing my young son with me and once someone yelled at him. It was like the man was waiting to find a way to tell someone off. I apologized to the man because I was teaching my son and I should have dealt with it first. I felt so bad for my son because I didn't want him to get discouraged. There are ways to communicate with out screaming across the course and belittling fellow players. I love what you are doing so KEEP IT UP!!!!!! 1 of our local clubs does free golf for kids under 14...I think this is a huge incentive to get out with your kids and get them interested in the game and will lead to more memberships in the future.

I really hate to say this because I don't like the expensive golf prices but the fact is, when you make things cheap you get cheap people, and cheap people destroy things. Take for instance McDonald's vs a high end restaurant. You don't really see people in high end restaurants screaming at the help and taking swings at the manager and dumping on the floor and what not. I honestly think these courses have a dress code to keep the riff raff out. I actually prefer that myself. Coming from a crazy motocross racer/guitar player here lol

I must say golf is my third favorite thing to do in the world number one sex number two is snow skiing a number three is golf which I do more than any other thing in my life. I'm surprised that you're bleeding heart but I guess I shouldn't be You are a spectacular human being inside and out it would appear and moreover you are an excellent coach your videos are wonderful for the high handicapper like me. my opinion golf is now as it always has been and that is that its purity must be preserved those that come to this sport should attempt to excel in it as it stands . Price. Price of equipment, price to play. I can't really afford a $500 set of clubs or $100 to play a round of golf on a nice course. I already have a cheap set of clubs, but they make it hard for me to keep up

@Mdmchannel That would be about $45 dollars off of the local courses price, though the local muni course is about $45 to play they tee off ever 5 minutes so you have someone on the green, someone on the fairway and some one on the tees, makes for a really long day. We had a really nice course here that was about $80 but could usually get a deal and they teed off every 15 minutes so it was really nice to play, sometimes you wouldn't even see anyone else the way the course was laid out, but they sold out to land developers and it's soon to be a housing tract.

Great Topic Paige. A number of concerns you bring up definitely would help "grow the game" First off is cost It appears you are playing Troon North today and while it is one of the more reasonable 1st class course in the area it still sets you back a pretty penny to play there more than once a month. Secondly it takes too long. I have been out on that course and others like it and with all the tourist traffic you can be out there 5 hours plus travel time, there goes the day. Also if you just want to practice most courses like that charge just to hit balls. Also I maybe wrong but you can not play 9 holes there and at many courses. ( well you can if you pay the 18 hole price!) Playing nine holes and providing an appropriate charge for it would help bring more people out. Anyway you continue to add class to the business and wish you all the best going forward

A few suggestions to make golf accessible. 1. Golf courses can offer discounts on scramble games, so that higher handicap players can band together with a low handicap player and play the best shot every time instead of trying to hit out of the rough etc. I’ve introduced the game to my daughter and friends this way. 2. Golf equipments are outrageously expensive. They need to come down on price, otherwise they will go the way of Nike and other manufacturers. One way to do that is to make clubs that are a few years older to be very affordable straight from manufacturer. 3. Golf balls need to be brought down in distance so that amateurs get an advantage in accuracy instead of distance. It will also help with golf course ownership and running cost. Water shortage is a real problem. 4. Cheaper muni courses do allow people with jeans and tshirts etc. I don’t think that’s an issue. But I like the idea of pay per hole.

Golf equipment companies are selling their equipment at the current price, and much research and effort went into arriving at those price points. There are less expensive brands, and there is even the option of making your own clubs (with kits from golfworks, etc..) but you're still going to be purchasing a large set of something that costs money to make. 3. Now you're talking crazy. 4. You're correct here, but I don't think paying per hole is going work well. Most courses require some travel, and I doubt people will travel to the courses to play a single hole.

I see basically you seem to have favorite clubs, that you hit with. My question is on club mechanic and design, how do you judge of what club to use. if the clubs are already designed for the distance in the factor. what rule do use for picking the number of the club.
