Like seen with Hei Bai, spirits are bound to the land they inhabit. The Painted Lady was probably too weak to do anything because of the pollution. This is probably because the fire nation polluted the waters slowly, so nobody knew there was a problem until it was too late. The village also doesn't seem to be very active in solving problems. They were intimidated by 5 fire nation soldiers, only 1 of which is a firebender.

the low number of soldiers and their quality didn't scare them, it's more that if they resist the fire nation will send in a larger force to pacify or even erase the town. Given that they didn't leave they also wouldn't want the town or their lives destroyed.

If it's anything like how Spirited Away depicts spirits, a river spirit is directly affected by the rivers they embody. Being polluted pollutes the spirit as well, so the Painted Lady was out of the game. Also, can't wait for you to get deep into this season. One of the best story/plot line out there.

Personally I quite like the theory that the painted lady actually never helped the townsfolk, she was just spotted in the past and everything good that happened was attributed to her, even though she didn't do anything. As a result she thanks katara for cleaning up her lake, not what she did for the town. I think the theory that she didn't help because the pollution made her weak overall makes more sense though, since we only see her after the waters are clean

The creators actually confirmed this. The Painted Lady wanted to help. Due to the pollution and the river dying her grip on the mortal plain was weakened to the point she can no longer manifest.

The horrible thing was, the river was the Painted Lady's domain. She literally couldn't do anything while it was polluted. Only when the water was clean could she appear, and (by extension) assist the people on the river. That was the entire reason why she appeared only to Katara; without her actions, that river would've remained polluted until well after the end of the war. Also, if Aang thought Katara was beautiful as the Painted Lady, imagine if he'd seen the real thing!

You have to be an extremelly powerful bender to be able to interact with spirits if you aren't the Avatar. There is this moment in book 2 when Iroh see Roku's dragon and now this scene with Katara. This is how powerful Katara has become.

Actually no, everyone can see spirit if the choose to reveal themself. It is better explain in the comics but anyway everyone could see heibai when he was destroying the village. To sense the spirits in the spirit world in other hands, is something only someone with an incredible connection with them can do, so the avatar or iroh that had connection with them in the past, that's why he could see roku dragon in book 1. Sense spirit have nothing to do with benders and power, and katara is no near to iroh level( katara is really strong but not that level, for now at least)

While the spirit at the end of the video was just there to confirm she's actually real. It makes sense why she didn't help her village. Like Sokka said, doing nothing was actually better in that situation than helping out with mirracles. It would bring attention from the nearby fire nation soldiers to investigate what's happening and it would potentially just make things worse. The villagers had to find a way to solve the problem and help themselves without her.

Industrialization has some serious drawbacks, but I'd argue if managed well, they're worth it. Given how much damage happened in just a few years, the Fire Nation is taking zero precautions for the common folk and environment. This factory couldn't feed all the need for refined metal of an entire nation's war economy. And it's new. So this is just an expansion to build more. A lot more judging by how polluted it is within a few years. So this is a sign of things ramping up. It is a well established precedent of history that a nation's people will suffer for resources to be diverted to supporting a war. Or even to push the latest and greatest in peace* time to retain international fear/respect. Sokka is being cold and pragmatic, and that's understandable. While it must be tempered, that thinking is needed in war, and given the state of the war, every possible advantage is to be considered. These people are suffering, but we've seen that throughout occupied territory. We've seen the Fire Nation lay entire forests to waste. An entire nation was wiped out in a first strike. Then again, these people didn't ask for this, and they couldn't say no without being locked up or killed. War makes hard choices a common burden. So what's the over under on Dock/Shoe having mental impairment from the pollution? Katara's mom is a cool idea, but alas, no. Wrecking the factory would also hinder the Fire Nation's production capacity. Not eliminate, but it might mean fewer tanks, ships, or giant projects like The Drill. Katara unilaterally going behind the team's back without voting calls to mind a certain someone who grew up on Pallas station. Toph would be overkill and might make things too obvious that there's an earthbender operative running amok. Remember, we saw Kyoshi lavabending when she separated Kyoshi island from the mainland. That factory is probably going to need months or years to fix. This could be considered an example of "Mission Creep." As well as why getting bogged down in local issues is understandable, but can easily be detrimental. So is it an affectation or or are we looking at something like DID? I don't know why she didn't step up sooner, but seeing spirits is still interesting.

If you're a fan of D&D, pay attention to this epsiode for Sokka is Lawful Good and Katara is Neutral Good bordering on Chaotic Good, which really helps differentiate between the LNC spectrum. Sokka is following his schedule, which is lawful, he knows that there is a bigger stake at play which while at the moment might ignore the villiage and leave them to their plight for now, but when the Fire Lord is defeated will benefit them in the long run. Katara on the other hand is strictly thinking about her own goals of helping the village, and aiding them short-term to the detriment of Sokka's plan. Both are good goals and ideals. Sokka is Lawful because he is strict on his own schedule and the bigger picture. Katara is Neutral/Chaotic because she is selfish in her desire to do good despite the detriment of the schedule. Lawful = Following a strict system, whether it be your own or written by another, Neutral = Following one's conscience/desire, Chaotic = Acting entirely within the moment and not being consistent.

Our princesses, Alicia and Ali, crever and beautiful (both)! Has elected Katara as her (their) hero. And called responsability on the Painted Lady. Maybe it's just some fans (like me) reading too deep, but the thing with the spirits in this sense is actually very shinto (the main religion/philosophy of Japan, but as a religion... they are not that... religious... but that is another talk). The thing is that spirits inhabit every object/body of nature. Stone, tree, ground, wall, window... everything has a spirit and that is what makes the thing in itself actually exist. So, when the river is sick, its spirit (in this case, the Painted Lady) also gets weakened. And as spirit, they also can not do much except what their objects normally do. That is why Moon and Ocean spirits are almost defenseless until they get help from the Avatar. So, Painted Lady can do things that her river can do... mist, sustain fishes, flow... things like that and probably took her a lot of effort to come and say thank you to Katara.

There is a movie, but it's so terrible the entire fanbase insists that there is no movie (plus, it's supposed to be a retelling of book 1, so even if it was good it wouldn't be continuing the story). There are however a collection of novels and graphic novels that cover some new stories set before, during, and after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a second series set in this world that follows the next Avatar in the cycle, called The Legend of Korra - it's got a bit of a different feel to AtlA, so liking one might not mean you like the other, but I think you'll enjoy it.

It is a weaker one, but it's important for showing that it's not just the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes actively suffering under the current Fire Nation. The war is hurting them too. @@bthsr7113 Yea I know. But sadly as an Episode, The Painted Lady is an Very weak one, and not very interesting to watch. Also it is possible to make an episode with lessons without sacrificing the Enjoyment. Which sadly this Episode was able to do.

It's not covered explicitly in this episode, but given how the destruction of Haibei affected him back in book 1 I think it's safe to say that the Painted Lady was probably too weakened by the pollution and destruction of her river to be able to do anything in the physical world herself. Thus why she's just grateful to Katara even though she appropriated her identity at first just to satisfy her own sense of justice; not only did Katara help bring her back from basically a spirit coma, but she also motivated and helped the spirit's human neighbors proactively take care of the land that that spirit is bound to, *and* before leaving the villagers were made aware of her deception and allowed to refute and come to terms with it. As someone who as a kid spent a lot of time around adults engaged in activism specifically against poverty, I really love how this episode explores and handles engaging with it. Coupled with last episode's "the gAang does antifascism at school", this book really starts out strong with the valuable life lessons!

This isn’t a spoiler because it’s never directly explained or addressed. The power of a spirit is often tied to a certain environment. Yes, the Painted Lady held dominion over the river, but as it became more polluted she became less powerful or influential. By cleaning the river they restored the Painted Lady’s power. Also, there is one Ayla live action movie by M Night Shamalan. However, I highly recommend you DON’T watch it. It’s a complete dumpster fire. It covers all of the events of season 1. You will deeply regret watching it and your day will be ruined. Everyone who watches it would prefer they hadn’t seen it and pretend that it doesn’t exist. After all, there is no movie in Ba Sing Se.

dont look up anything till you're done, then you should watch the movie as i feel you will have a lot to say about it. also a spinoff show kind of after that. also netflix was working on a live action show but idk if they still are.
