Real quick guys! The instructor and I talked about this after the flight and he really couldn’t smell what I was smelling. He caught a small whiff of it when I mentioned it to him, but not enough to alarm him. But, The flight school did a fantastic job at finding and repairing this as soon as it was reported.

Dan Bass saved my ass. True story. He talked me into getting one of those Sensorcons. Similar situation to yours, solo pick up from maintenance, was getting an alarm even in flight. Went right back. Turned out they didn't adequately tighten the exhaust bolts causing a similar exhaust leak but no smell. Having information about things you can't see is essential. JPI engine analyzer is another beneficial thing like that. Helped me discover a failed mag in flight.
@flywiththeguys3 жыл бұрын
I was lucky it was MoGas. Looking back I wish I had done something sooner about it, especially since I could smell it. I talked with the instructor further and the leak was only on my side, so I could have been getting a lot more than he did during the flight.

Hi Carl- I had been researching flight schools throughout the US and ended up traveling to Glendale, Arizona to take my flight training at Fly Eagle Sport. I started in March earlier this year and completed my training and checkride in early April. I have nothing but good things to say about the school and their instructors. I could see that you were flying with Dave who also wears a few other hats for the school including manager and maintenance. Everyone there is like a team supporting each other and the students. I consider myself fortunate to have had the pleasure of flying with three other instructors in addition to my primary instructor- this gave me an opportunity to view my learning experience from different perspectives which I consider to be valuable. I agree with your assessment of the quality of the school, and their thoroughness in the upkeep of their equipment (thanks to Dave). It was a great experience , and I think I am the oldest student to have “graduated” from their school. Regards, Craig

Great video as usual. Love story time. When I did my long solo x-country while still training it almost happened to me. I had the heater on for the 3rd leg on the way back home and I could feel a headache coming on. Turned off the heater and opened some fresh air even though it was 28F in flight and it went away within a couple minutes. Not sure what they found out but u did tell them and I flew that plane since with no issues. And I'll be getting me one of those detectors. Been meaning to for a while

Well done video with an important message. I am an aspiring pilot so I don't have any direct experience with flying clubs, but I do have a lot of experience with small groups and organizations. You offered good advice to individual pilots about how important it is for them to purchase their own. I would encourage those same pilots to pool their resources to buy CO sensors and backup sensors for their clubs. Every CO sensor can save a life.

This happens on the ground with safety gear, too. Every time I bring my first aid bag hiking or orienteering courses, I never use it. Forgot it for a single 5 mile hike and guess when it was needed to help fellow hikers who had a fall? Time to improvise and never forget it again. Murphy is relentless. Hear they named a law after him. Double check that safety gear... more important than the second camera mount!

Amazing video. I purchased a digital CO monitor from Walmart to check for high levels myself. First Alert CO710 Carbon Monoxide Detector with 10-Year Battery and Digital Temperature Display. Has the alert visual and audio.
@flywiththeguys2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you're being proactive with it and I like that it has a digital read out so you can see the trend! I just want you to be careful. Those are meant for homes and have different alarm thresholds and accuracy. For instance that alarm response time for 70PPM takes 1-4 hours of measuring. If it's 150 PPM it could take anywhere from 10-50 minutes to sound an alarm. At that level and time frame you could already started feeling the effects of CO in the plane. Detectors meant for aviation are more sensitive and have lower thresholds to alert the pilot before diminished abilities. BUT, what you got is still WAY better than those cards that have the dot that changes color. Those take 45 minutes of exposure to change.... By the time they change it can be too late.
@keithhoward92382 жыл бұрын
@@flywiththeguys Mines has a current reading screen to measure the levels of CO gasses. So, for me when I scan my instruments and Co monitor. If I see anything above a 35ppm its landing time for me. From what I saw on KZbin Medical advisory is that 9ppm at low levels can have a long-term impact on your own health. So, if as high as 9ppm. I will open up my Piper Tomahawk small window to flow some fresh air into the cabin. And if I have one headache I will divert to the nearest airport quickly. No playing around here. I like to live and enjoy life more than flying to get somewhere.

Just know you have someone there as a backup. If anything goes wrong, they're going to take care of things so have fun! The Claustrophobic thing, yes you're in tight quarters, but it's not as bad as you think and there is plenty of venting in the plane.

One thing I’ve learned in 32 years of flying in the Air Force, airlines, and GA is that an airplane will often “talk” to you when something is not right. Trust your training, trust your gut, and listen to the plane.
