Still remember when a client from UK demanded that i 'pronounce' a word with the right accent. I refused and told him I would only if he could say my name with the perfect inflection. I essentially held that meeting hostage. My team did reprimand me, but i told them to fire me if it was a problem. I was invaluable to them at the time. Anywho, that client's business closed down and I moved onto teams with clients who laugh at me trying to keep my cat away from my keyboard and help me with the more difficult pronunciations.

"I bet it smells like curry" is such a funny insult to me because of how stupid it is. I grew up in rural Minnesota, and somehow ended up becoming friends with a Moroccan kid who lived in an apartment building with a lot of other African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian immigrants. It was my first real exposure to non-American or non-European cooking. The smell was striking, but what I learned was that when cooking smells that intensely , its gonna be the best damn food you've eaten all month. Even if my poor white midwestern palate couldn't cope with the seasoning at first. Guys that toss out "I bet it smell like curry" as an insult don't know how good curry can be

As an Egyptian, this comment warms my heart. The Tweets he quoted were literally by Neo-Nazis also. One was called "Aryanautist1488" and the other had "1488"in their name too. In Nazi ideology, the term "Aryan" is used to describe the racial group the Nazjs considered the most superior, "pure", advanced and the "master race". And they are people of Northern Eruopean descent. The number 1488 is a symbol used by White nationalists and neo-Nazis. It is a combination of two parts: "14", refers to the "14 Words," a slogan popularized by white nationalist David Lane, which says: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children.” and "88", which represents HH, the 8th letter of the alphabet. "HH" stands for Heil Hitler. Neo-Nazism and general nationalism have been on the rise, and neo-Nazis are no longer considered fringe or underrepresented, partly due to platforms like Elon Musk's X, which supports freedom of speech. This has led to X becoming the new 4Chan basically. However, Elon Musk recently rolled out an update explicitly stating that hate groups, including National Socialists (Nazis), are not allowed. The update also introduced a new option to report "hate groups." but their presence is still strong even after the update.

My answer is: It's just plain exposure. We (as humans) fear the unknown. When someone speaks like us but is entirely like us, it freaks us out. That experience can go into interest - "Oh, a foreigner is speaking my language! Cool!" - ... or they go into darker places., of which we need no more reminders of in this world. The more we are exposed to different kinds of 'us', the more it is rationalized in ours minds that this is just another form of us. The more we are exposed we start to realize that they're not really that different from us. Not much weirder than that one odd uncle/aunt most know ;) and they are humans, right? Which should make 'them' part of 'us'. My big question is: Will we be racist against aliens? (As in, "ET" etc). I fear we would.
@uriu31932 ай бұрын
I mean of fucking course we would be racist against aliens, if they somehow exist and if we somehow encounter them. I mean come on! We are racist among ourselves for a whole range of things. A lot have phds in it
@adorp2 ай бұрын
It isn't fear of unknown. Russian English sounds way more off than Indian English, but people find it cool. The African English accent they used in Black Panther is also cool. Almost all exotic English accents are considered cool. It is a bit objectifying, but still not degrading. Indian English simply lacks that nature. English pronunciation is like cursive writing. You need to give it a flavour. But Indians, too used to their phonetic alphabet and simplified pronunciations, simply don't get it. If you study Indian literature, you will see that many poets discarded Hindi in favour of Urdu, which is more flavoured than Hindi. Hindi sounds too mundane, and when that accent is applied to English, it leads to similar issues. It isn't a racism thing. Of course, there are hundreds of languages in India other than Hindi. But Hindi is the language of majority, and that created the stereotype.
@Thecannibalfrombeyond2 ай бұрын
@@adorpsheer stupid comment, the accent which many tend to despise, have more of its base in southern India. Ever heard of Tamilian speaking English, that’s the stereotype or epitome of degradation when people try to put on an exaggerated Indian accent. So think before you put all of your eggs in a basket .

You are Right. India does have the caste system. But the problem here is when you hate an entire demographic because they have the caste system, you're also ironically hating on those who suffer under the same caste system as well... Since they themselves are also subjected to the same anti-Indian hate. It's like hating the poor working class white people who lives in the rural parts of America because there might be some white supremists or racists living in those areas as well. All I'm trying to say is that hate can be blind most of the times... and it is directed towards innocent people who have done nothing to deserve it.

It’s a problem that is getting solved as each generation continues. Racism against Indians does not and has in fact gotten much worse.
@GeorgeGabrielTemplarKnight2 ай бұрын
I am also a South Indian bro... and I have indeed faced racism in my life... It may be to your surprise but the hate that I received was mostly from other Indians than foreigners... Especially from the North Indians. We only started to become aware of racism when it is done to us by foreigners... The Caste based discrimination is still causing an intense amount harm to our country and people bro... And this so called "benefits" that you speak of is ironically generating more hate towards the lower caste Indians than solving the actual caste based discrimination. Heck we don't need these benefits in the first place if we had a strong economy and better law enforcement to prevent and punish caste based hate crimes and killings... What's even worse is that when Indians go abroad... instead of adopting and assimilating with the foreign culture, we still hold on to our rotting caste based biases and discrimination towards other Indians... While I agree that we must expose and address the racism we are receiving globally, we should also take this opportunity to have some self reflection about our rotting biases and hatred towards each other.

I was teaching my niece (when she was around 9) who is a Bengali-American (Indian-American) born in America how to say the word "jol" which means "water" in Bengali. She kept saying the word with a dark L and found it hard to say it the way it's supposed to be said -- with the "L" said with the tongue right behind the teeth (like the way you say "level"). So she was actually superimposing American English onto the language she was learning to speak (Bengali) -- even though the latter is actually her native tongue. How interesting!! This video is just fascinating. Thanks for making it! Subscribed. Oh, and thanks for the website for Dr. Lawson's research. Great closing, btw lol.

I mean to me it was never about accents, I suppose it was low self-esteem coupled with things we read on the internet. In the end what fixed it was uninstalling instagram and losing toxic friends, more or less I still sound the same but I say what I want to say and how I like to say it. I believe, that people associate accents with speaking mistakes (not always, but usually). English has very different ways to pronounce vowels and a word can change its meaning by the way you pronounce it. I've met many people from different countries whose native language isn't english and in my personal opinion we have less trouble understanding each other than with a native speaker who expects a certain pronunciation.

It wasn't "racism", but the jokes made on the way I spoke drove me to the point where I dedicated 3 years of my life to train it away, and sound more European. I think accents are amusing cause every individual has an unique one. Be it the way someone speaks, to using certain words, it really highlights their life story and puts a flair on their individuality, hence the prejudice part is awfully staggering. It's about time we should learn that humans are terrifically diverse , and that uniqueness should be appreciated. PS: The video is beautiful by the way.
