As far as my knowledge goes, its called a monkeys fist after the monkeys fist knot. which is usually tied at the end of a rope to give it weight... better for throwing onto the deck of a ship at least 20ft up. they also used it to tether ships together while transporting supplies from one ship to another while at sea back in WW1, and probably earlier.
