Yes we have to be our own advocate because sometimes doctors assume stuff just by looking at us .

57! Wow, skating is an anti ageing sport I think! Totally agree about docs though- I had a slipped disc and physios only care that I can walk again, whereas I'm saying 'no, wait, I used to be able to balance and bend in different ways to skate before my injury. Sometimes they just expect the bare minimum or movement whereas we have so much more scope of ability. It's important to listen to your body, no one knows it like you do. Hope those knees are better now.

I’m an RN - and very-beginner skater - and soooo glad you went to sports medicine physician. They’re usually very knowledgeable about ALL kinds of sports injuries. They see people with skate injuries, hockey players, etc. I know what you mean, I’m exactly your age and apprehensive about going to doctor anyways - waiting for the “condescending” attitude, etc, haha. Glad you have the video channel: “This is what I do…”😂😂😂. I alway say with knee injuries, a good physical therapist is important. You learn how to strengthen those muscles specifically surrounding the knee. Another great video, full of great empowering advice, thanks Deb!!! I always learn so much for you!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Mine was the oposite. I had real bad foot pain because I was developing Morton Neuromas on each foot. Got me to the point I was disable for two weeks. I planned to tell every detail to my doctor (same feeling you had) and in my case the doctor simply sent me to take MRI's from both feet, gave me the right custom insoles I needed and my problem was 100% fixed. I swear when I was in pain I wanted my nerves OUT and I was set on that when I first talked to him (take them ooout!!), but the doctor was right and simply gave me the solution. It is still important if your doctor knows that you're passionate about the sport you do. Doctors know the importance of sports because they know what coronary arteries are. :)

YES! I’ve only been skating a few months, but I’ve already “tweaked” my knee. 😭 I am finding I am overall out of shape and not strong enough to skate very long yet. Any chance you could give us some tips on strength building exercises for skating? I’m a bit clueless in that department. Love u Dirty!!❤

Listen to your body. Use sports braces, stretch before you skate. You can build muscles by wearing your skates on carpet and practicing standing on one leg, doing knee bends etc. Listening to good music while you skate helps tremendously! I'm 58 and I'm gonna keep skating until I can't.

I am SO glad it turned out to not be a big deal! I also understand about doctors (and others) judging us by "typical" standards of people in our range. We must be our own advocate. Thank you for this important PSA, Dirty!

Right now I go to a gym for muscle therapy and leg strengthening. It's a long process that will take months to complete because I've lost cartilage in my left knee. I'm afraid to do threes and crossovers but it's my goal to be able to do those things again and more as I once did when I was a teen. I had to seek out a gym trainer to help me find the right exercises for all the leg and foot muscles which were week in the first place having not been on skates in about 50 years. Anyway, good for you, Deb. Your video here is inspiration for any problem to show or explain to a doctor who little time for you.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience, especially your feelings prior to the doctor's visit. Being in PA (physician assistant) school, I want to make sure all the people I treat feel seen and respected once I get into practice. I want my fellow skaters to stay healthy & be able to trust their medical providers

Two weeks ago, I skinned my knee roller skating outside. I am so glad it was a skinned knee and not worse. It is healing very well. I am glad you are doing well. I got right back into my skating, and I am trying to teach myself, through your videos of course, how to skate backwards. Gonna get a helmet first lol!

Perfect timing! I broke my ankle yesterday and am seeing the podiatrist about surgery tomorrow
@iharkins17 ай бұрын
See an orthopedic surgeon- preferably an ankle specialist. I had trimalleolar fracture with pins and plates after a fall skating and got sports physical therapy afterwards. I'm doing fine 2 years later. I'm 58.

Don't forget how much chiropractic care with an open-minded reputable doctor can keep you moving. Proper structural alignment is also key.
@unburdenedcatcreature7 ай бұрын
Chiropractics is a pseudoscience! It isn’t proven to be effective. An osteopathic doctor may be helpful though. They’re licensed doctors that are more focused on treating patients holistically (at least in the US)

Being considered fat and often spraining my knees from not just skating, but dancing, and being a kindergarten teacher- I can't tell you how many times a doctor has said, "You need to exercise." Doc, I do... That's why I am in here!

Please don't ignore chest pains, chest "pinched" sensations (unless you know it's indigestion). If it goes on over 24 hrs. Go to the emergency room.

I got a concussion playing an unusual sport. I sat in the ER for 8 hours. When I was finally taken to the room, my friend showed the doctor a video and every medical professional in the room immediately jumped into action. (I got hit in the face with a 4lb ball thrown at a high speed snapping my neck backwards.)

Hey love, you have a mission: Begin the carnivore diet. Alone, it cures diabetes, gout, autoimmune diseases, and arthritis. 3x a day 1/2 stick butter (salted) & 8oz ground meat. No sugar, no starch, no veggies, no fruit. This is your mission if you want to continue skating. 90 day challenge. I'm at day 80 something and have lost 18lbs and still going. No brain fog, zero hunger. Move it or lose it. 💙Look up Dr. Ken Berry and "The Steak and Butter Gal".
