Karin91730 Hi Karin. I just got accepted to Columbia University GS. I don't know if it is too late but i think the best advice i'd give on the essay is to personalize it. Make it tell your story. Personally i based it majorly on my background as an African American student, and what has built me all through the years to eventually want to choose a path in Columbia.

My parents always had excuses to not sign me up for things when I was little and my father refused to pay my school fees in middle school so I wasn't able to join any clubs or sports.

No. I studied in a non-English school for my whole life, only took TOEFL, SAT General and 2 SAT subjects as far as testing. Got in, among others, Duke, Brown and Columbia. Gonna matriculate at Columbia this fall.

So early decision is a legally binding agreement but only if you are accepted with sufficient financial aid. Columbia is a need blind school which means if they accept you they are willing to cover everything your family is not able to. If all you can afford is books then they will pay for everything else. Sometimes due to misunderstanding the financial CSS form the aid may seem insufficient, but in that case all you have to do is speak to the university, explain and they will probably adjust it so you are able to attend.

Hey! What curriculum did you take in high school? Also you don't need to have a GPA to get into a university in the US. I took the IB so I didn't have the conventional 3.0 or 4.0 GPA, but I had IB points instead.
