Cool vid man Pro tip: Quarantine your kit outside or in the shed for a few days after a camping trip, Don't take your kit straight indoors or you're going to have ticks crawling around your house. A few days after a trip I found ticks crawling up my walls. No joke! 😩

I didn't see that spoon on your list of what you bought. Maybe you brought it from home. Just searched my local Walmart to see what I could do for 100.00. My list: (rounded up to nearest 50 cents.) Tent 30.00 Inflatable sleeping pad 15.00 (No sleeping bag since you're sleeping on top of yours) Headlamp 2.00 (No lamp because headlamp works in tent also) Same 10.00 cook set Lighter 1.00 Bug spray/repellent 5.00 Ozark trail memory foam pillow 10.00 (to put on top my backpack) Same 10.00 backpack 1.5 liters Smartwater 1.00 2 packs of Ramen 1.00 Mountain house sausage biscuits and gravy 10.00 (Because I like a good breakfast in the morning) Folgers instant coffee packs 2.00 (got to have me coffee) Ozark trail utensil set 1.50 (Knife, fork, spoon) Total. 98.50 Of course it was cheaper because of me rounding everything up. Was fun to watch and then see if I could do the same, better or worse for the same amount. I think I did pretty well.

There is an old saying over here in the UK, commonly known as the 7 P’s: Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. 1. Plan your equipment and load carrying properly. 2. Plan your route, noting fixed landmarks, using a map. It helps if you plan it in short sections. 3. Take a map and compass, check your phone is fully charged and that you have a charger in case the battery gets drained. While walking, stop every 5-10 minutes and look around you so you can remember what it looks like, also take a photo looking back the way you came. If you do get lost stop where you are, take some time to calm down and get control of yourself, have a sip or two of water. Then check the area where you are for clues and look at map and compass to wok out where you are. From what you said, walking uphill gets you home, downhill to your target of the creek, so with that simple information you can get yourself out of trouble (which you did 😉).

Got a couple of tips for you. Next time, don't hike in shorts, I wouldn't want to risk contracting Lymes disease. Duct tape your trousers around the tops of your boots, this will stop the ticks from crawling up your trouser legs. Then, you want to reverse wrap your legs from ankle to knee with duct tape - so that the sticky is facing outwards. As you're hiking along any ticks you brush against will stick to the duct tape. Then at the end of the day, you can just cut the duct tape wrap off your legs. I'd carry a spare plastic bag in your kit for all the wrap you cut off? You can throw it away at home. Pack the duct tape in your kit for re-applying the next day. Also - please don't carry your sleeping bag exposed like that, it's a vital piece of kit when you're camping. If you get caught in a downpour and it gets soaked, it's not the best thing to sleep in. In some environments it could lead to exposure and hypothermia issues. Just put it in a black bin liner and tie it up. You can then stow it on the backpack still. I stow my sleeping kit (tent and bag) as vertical as possible as it's right in the middle of your back making it a little easier to carry. If they're swinging around under your backpack, it can lead to more energy being used to counteract it when you walk. I'd probably get some fluoro material strips and then walk the trail to the creek with Anna's dad and tie the strips around tree trunks at eye level. That way you've always got a guide path for next time?

For camping and picnics etc, I have a few sets of cutlery in their own containers. Fork, knife and spoon, and occasionally chopsticks too, from Amazon, they aren't expensive and I had the ones in a neoprene case. They take up very, very little space or weight.

Great video JT, I wild camp a lot here in the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales, no better way to recharge the batteries! Did you have a sleeping mat for under your sleeping bag? I never noticed one and they help massively for a comfortable nights sleep, just a basic closed cell foam mat is really light and super cheap, also I'd look at the company Flextail and look at their range of electronic bug repel devices, in recent years they've become very popular in the camping world as they do a great job and make nights in buggy environments much more comfortable, or you could use an old British camping technique, just leave a piece of marmite on toast in your tent and all the bugs run a mile!!! 🤣🤣🤣

I'm always so jealous watching videos of people with campfires too, they're completely banned here in Wales, even in winter, so we have to rely on just clothes, a good sleeping bag and plenty of hot food and drink... and whisky!!!

@@markjones127No campfires would be sad. I'm also from Kentucky and lots of people have fire pits or just campfires in the backyards. So nice on a summer or fall evening.

One of my grandsons, a keen camper, loves nothing better than a weekend camping out with a mate in the Gondwana rainforest, near his home in Queensland. A venturer scout, Alex told me via Webex that he was surprised you got lost. He told me, " Gramps, all he had to do was copy what all the trees around him were doing, and leave". 😂

Dude I bet Anna's paps got lost a bunch of times in the woods before he learnt his way around the place I reckon that you need to go get yourself lost in the woods at least once a week just so that you can know the place like the back of your hand , one of the first things I do when I go somewhere new is go and get myself lost I remember when we used to go on holiday when as a family when I was a kid I'd go get myself lost by the end of our holiday I'd know the place better than some of locals.

Bigfoot I could cope with! Ticks and spiders? That’s a whole bag of nopes! I’m out! Especially the ticks! I’m terrified of them! Get some duct tape and tape the bottom of your trousers next time or wear gaiters and tape the bottom of them to your boots. As for the spiders, that’s easy, flame thrower.😊
