Reason why darius put the chains on you is that item is very cost effective if the enemy only has major source of damage of a damage type. Saves him 400 gold off of spirit visage gives him 200 more health and 10 more ability haste.

He has both AP components of Luden’s which give 80 AP, and Luden’s gives 80 AP plus magic pen, mana, and the passive. The passive does not hit the casters, so effectively he is doing the same damage at both times, but the minions are leveled up later.
