Nah lud is right. If you're so far removed from your heritage you only have random percents and you don't even know where you're from then it doesn't really matter. But if you're first generation and or your family is keenly aware of their culture and where they come from and are raised on that it's a different story. Like my dad was a first generation american from two swedish parents and they used to go over and have met their cousins etc before and are pretty immersed in swedish stuff. But like even tho I do sweedish stuff every so often I don't really do much of anything with it or even particularly care about it so I wouldn't really refer to myself as like super sweedish or anything. Where as I have cousins (my dad's sisters kids) who are pretty much all danish citizens also and have spent a lot of time on Sweden and Denmark (their father is a first gen from Denmark) and being Danish is absolutely part of their culture and who they are. Like it really really depends on how many roots you even have to your past or how even involved or not you are. Like if you're some random guy in NY who's 15% Irish and doesn't know anything about Ireland or it's culture you really shouldn't be calling yourself Irish imo.

Lud is completely right. I am a first generation American who us mixed (Honduran & White) and I find myself cringing when friends try and relate culturally on the basis that they’re 1/8 Latin. It’s not the same in the slightest. They don’t look mixed + they haven’t experienced any of the culture. It’s white people trying to claim minority status versus people who experience all of it. Being mixed, the culture of both sides, and being racially ambiguous = not really fitting in a one single place.

@@volundrfrey896 because I’m a second generation Honduran. I’m not going to name every single possible ethnicity that I’m apart of because that would literally be going against what I just stated. I'm the first generation of my family to be born in America and I took a test to see my ancestry. I'm North American if that counts lol, but my roots are traced back to South Mexico and parts of Spain and Morocco. Ludwig is "American" in a sense by being born here but I'm sure he identifies as being Spanish/French more so than American. American is also not exactly a race or ethnicity, it's a nationality.

I started to feel like these privileged people were disrespecting the people who went through the hard life of growing up in the islands by claiming "I'm Samoan" but didn't practice any customs or traditions of the culture or even worse, didn't even learn the language!!!!!! I guess it really depends on each scenario. I’m a first generation American and I grew up speaking Spanish as my primary language. A lot of my extended family would only speak Spanish as well so I definitely saw a major culture difference when I first started school. It’s mainly up to the parents at how much they want to engross their child into their culture.

Sorry QT but he does have a point. It does come off as a bit pretentious to me when ppl claim culture because their great-great-great-great relatives immigrated over and yet they themselves didn’t really hold to any of their culture in their daily lives. My grandparents from my mom immigrated from Mexico so I’m 2nd generation, and I grew up with some Mexican traditions through my childhood. I consider myself Mexican-American, and I think Lud has a point, it makes a difference in how you grew up.

9:06, sorry I’m commenting on so many of your older vids BUT I’m leanin more towards Luds side on this because I appreciate that he acknowledges his ethnic background rather than undermining that by claiming nationality to encompass who he is. It’s good to express pride in our roots and how we got to where we are 😌 that isn’t to say “boo QT doesn’t appreciate culture or her roots” it’s more to express appreciation towards someone who stands as an example of the importance there is behind knowing your roots. I’m a person of color and take pride in the aspects of my ancestral roots and think more people should look into theirs! Not only is it interesting but in a way it in a funny way connects us by acknowledging that we’re all different beyond just physical attributes. ☺️
