I've been really enjoying your videos! I am starting a boot camp next week, and I'm coming from 7 years of owning my own business as well. It's interesting to hear your perspective on interviewing after not doing it for so many years because I am going to be in the same boat. Keep it up!

It was fun! The interviewer made it pretty casual, it seems like a pretty laid back team so they helped make it more approachable. I think if I was interviewer for a position like a full fledged software engineering position it would have been even more difficult but I am really happy with how it went. What line of business are you coming from? Feel free to reach out on LinkedIn!

@@ColbyJaxCodes Sounds like it could be a good first dev job and team to work with, hope you get it! I was a co-owner of a small digital marketing agency, I was in charge of all our design. Thanks, I’ll connect with you!

Thanks, good to hear! More to come, for sure. If you stick with it you can make it. It's cheesy but true.

My first developer job was creating custom wp themes. Don’t underestimate the job. Depending on the client you will be using a large extent of your programming knowledge.

Getting your foot in the door and getting work experience, no matter how "awful" the code base may be, or the work may be, is invaluable. Working with any kind of code is oftentimes very different than the video tutorials that are everywhere nowadays. And while I think they are good (the tutorials, learning is good), nothing can replace development work experience in your programming career, especially the opportunity to work with other great programmers.

When interviewing for WP positions, make sure to mention ACF and the pros/cons of the block editor. To be clear, depending on the company those positions are highly technical. Sure if you’re using elementor it’s not, but a fully custom theme using custom fields and pulling data from a backend is the entire full stack.

@@ColbyJaxCodes Also wanted to mention, wrt WP positions, knowledge of CSS/Script insertion points is key. Where/how does the theme pull in styles? Where do scripts get pulled in from? What WP functions are needed to make styles and scripts run properly? And you are correct that these jobs are good starting points. I made ~70,000 a year remotely at my first position making WP themes. Hard work but mastery of CSS and ACF is key!

@@Josh_Gage Hey Joshua, I wondered if I could ask you some questions about developing fully custom themes for WP? I currently use Elementor and want to expand my skillset into the full stack. I've got started with UnderStrap but wondered if there's a best way to go about learning this?
@Josh_Gage

@@blakekeith-jopp6654 The best way to make custom themes from scratch is by using html and css to make the custom blocks with ACF. There are tutorials for how to do this online.

Dude just start now. I was not ready and I still got the interview. I don't have a portfolio and I had just barely put together my resume. Just look for the right position and apply.

@@girijeshthodupunuri1300 I'll be making a video about this soon but I got the job from this interview! I'll make a video about it soon talking about how I identified it etc. I would also watch some of my earlier videos for suggestions about "alternative positions" that are great for starting in that are similar to developer and get you in the industry.
