I would get a hearing test ASAP. You may need an intratympanic steroid (through the eardrum) to help restore or keep what hearing you have left. The virus attacks your auditory and vestibular nerve. You’re experiencing tinnitus. Typically you need to do the steroid within 48 hours, but I’ve seen it work within the first two weeks of onset. For the vertigo, you will compensate. It may take awhile. Physical therapy can help with vestibular rehabilitation. Hope this helps!!

Bumping this- As a Deaf person I can't stress the importance enough of getting hearing tests- Though if Chris or anyone who recently started having tinnitus symptoms and it hasnt gone away, there unfortunately isn't a cure yet for it (I have chronic tinnitus too) but I find music helps "stop" it so might be an option for you? Also if anyone has 2+ weeks of non stop tinnitus- go and see a dr.

Hi Ballinger Family! I’m so sorry you are going through this Christopher! Hang in there! I work at a Hearing and Balance Health Center and couldn’t help but chime in- you are receiving great care and are def on a great regimen of anti inflammatory meds, but wanted to make sure they triage you for thorough hearing test and balance assessment/ follow up. You may benefit from PT to strengthen the weaker inner ear as you heal. You may need your hearing checked after treatment is completed. Only chiming in here because we know from experience that the ER may not discharge with a clear follow up to a good ear nose and throat physician and physical therapist who specializes in inner ear VOR strengthening. Particularly during the Covid crisis, wouldn’t want any care to fall through the cracks. Recommend telehealth with a good ENT who specializes in balance disorders if you haven’t already! Sending love and health, your videos (and your sisters videos) brought so much joy and inspiration to our family during early quarantine and now we are hooked fans! Lovely children, wonderful family, thank you so much for all you do!!! 💕✨ feel better and hang in there!

I actually recently uninstalled social media from my phone and that helped a lot, including just doing whatever you enjoy - whether that’s just watching tv or building a guitar or KZbin or whatever. So...I'm a pretty introverted person, generally speaking. And what helps me when I have a million things going on is JOURNALing and I guess "complaining" to my journal/letting all my thoughts roam free. It's not for everyone, but I definitely recommend trying it out as a way to de-stress :)

De stress my friend. Yoga. Meditation. Alone time. Warm baths in the dark with a candle. Sleep to nature sounds. Nap. Take an hour a day away from kids, partner, all “noise”, give more time to your hobbies- not only routine but things you enjoy. Also I take Gabapentin for migraines. Super common out East. Nerve pain. Used as a pain med after surgeries. Seizures. Stroke survivors. It’s common. They use that over pain meds that are or can be addicting.

I got shingles when I was a sophomore and high school and now have nerve damage bc no doctor believed my pain. The continued to send me home saying it was a rash and to switch my laundry detergent. Shingles attacks the nerves and because I had it for so long I permanently damaged me. I got shingles on the side of my leg and moved up my hips to my ribs. It was incredibly painful. When I finally did get answers all of the doctors acted like it wasn’t there fault because it is so rare for someone young to get it. That pain I will never forget because of the amount of pain mixed with everyone thinking I’m faking.

I work in Audiology but obviously ethically can't diagnose over the internet. I highly highly recommend getting a check up for your ear specifically with an Audiologist. If you cannot get in with an audiologist because of the added difficulties Covid brings, make it an ENT as a second choice. But you should be able to get a referral to an Audiologist remotely if you tell the referring Dr you are concerned about tinnitus at the same time as having Oral Shingles. The audiologist will be able to help you regarding potential steroids within the ear itself or other time sensitive treatments. Please don't ignore this advice even if you try to have remote visits. They will tell you where to go from there and if you have to come in in person (I suspect you will need to). Side note: Meditation is scientifically proven to lower cortisol production (which is produced in the body during stressful situations and can be harmful over time, lower the immune response, etc.). I recommend starting there.

I was 31 when we had our son. That triggered a shingles outbreak in me on my right side. It was mild and it hurt some in my arm pit and to lift my arm. My doctor at the time told me to totally quarantine from my newborn son. It was devastating to me. His pediatrician said that he would be okay that he still had the immunity from being in my tummy. Just to keep it covered and wash my hands. I’m sorry you can’t be around the baby. It’s heartbreaking.

“YAY, I’M DONE WITH MY NAP!!” Thanks for sharing your experiences with us Christopher. I’m glad to hear you’re doing so much better. And I’m so glad that you have had Jessica to be there for you during this time. And it makes me so sad that you and Luke couldn’t be so buddy buddy during the worst of this...as a fellow parent I completely understand that. I have a couple of great friends who have had shingles. Both had it mostly in the trunk of their bodies. And one of them had an actual dermatologist tell her to take the natural supplement L-Lysine along with the other medications she was already taking for her shingles. She was actually my boss at the time, and when she saw that I got a really nasty cold sore, she actually gave me some of her L-Lysine to take at work. Since cold sores actually come from the same family of viruses as Chicken Pox and Shingles it actually helped me a lot. And cold sores are something that everyone in my family struggles with. Since we have learned of L-Lysine we actually heal so much quicker from them. You can even buy a topical Lysine for when cold sores erupt. Just thought I’d share about the Lysine because my other friend took it on her doctors orders because she was actually pregnant when she got her shingles and her doc didn’t want her to take the antivirals because he wasn’t sure how it would affect her baby.

I’ve had shingles a few times before and I’m not sure if it is exactly the same with oral shingles but most types of shingles caused by stress will return a lot in the future - with excessive stress, so I don’t have advice about directly dealing with stress - but, if ever you feel any symptoms coming on in the future, i’ve found that just take a few days off to rest and relax stop the full symptoms coming on 👍🏼 glad you’re feeling better now! Shingles sucks.

Also, setting aside time to talk with love ones or professionals about things that in the past or currently do stress you out. ❤️ I hope you feel better soon and enjoy lots of rest! It had to have been scary to experience this during a pandemic.

Please PLEASE be careful with gabapentin. It can have major side effects including making you lose your eyesight. It is also given to people with nerve damage like diabetics, which is what it is most offten prescribed for. I was on that medication and I started losing my eyesight and it was horrible. So if your eyesight starts to get strange, even if it is just fuzzy out of focus or feels like you have a headache behind your eyes, PLEASE talk to your doctor about stopping the gabapentin.

I’m so glad you’re feeling better Christopher! My Uncle actually had shingles on his head which was definitely caused by stress. It was hard for his family to watch him go through that so praying for you and your family that you get healed from this very quickly!

As silly s it sounds, Animal Crossings has been a huge stress reliever for me. I know there has been some research to back up the benefits to playing the game to reduce anxiety so I highly recommend! I usually take some nights to lie in bed listening to music and just play the game for a bit.

In March, I got Bell’s palsy. COVID was at its peak and I was still mourning the death of my mother AND my dog died unexpectedly that month. All the stress triggered BP and I also had sinusitis. My whole left side of my face was droopy and paralyzed. They also prescribed Prednisone for BP. I think it helped a lot but I hated the side effects! I am all better now but my doctor said to get my stress down. I started to spend less time on my phone and more time outside. I think unplugging from the digital world has helped keep my stress down!

Had everything you described almost identical medications and way diagnosed and everything. Found your video very comforting. I’m a week out and still exhausted. I had a pinched nerve in my neck and idk if that had anything to do with it or if the stress of that caused it. Thank you so much for the reassurance. The nerve pain has been hard.
