I completely agree with how people should respect illnesses and injuries that they may not see. The amount of people who have screamed at my terminally ill fiance for using a handicap parking spot is ridiculous. They assume because he looks young and he''s not limping or something that he's just driving someone else's car to get a spot or something. They don't know or care that walking more than 20 feet will make him completely winded on a bad day. They don't notice or care that his arm around me is actually helping him walk until he can get to a cart to lean on while walking through the grocery store. If they saw him on a good day, they just assume he's taking advantage of the system. Invisible struggles, illness, injuries, etc. absolutely exist, and you don't know what kind of pain someone is going through.

Even people with disabilities in general. I’ve been in a wheelchair my whole life and people STILL GIVE ME WEIRD LOOKS. I’m as independent as I can be but still, I deserve to be treated as a real person. Your back pain came really close to my heart because my dad hurt his back doing a dead lift a couple years ago and his back hurts everyday. He always tries to hide it from us so we won’t see him in the pain that he’s in. I try to ask him about it but he won’t talk to me about it. I really don’t want him to have surgery.

Omg, I’m way older than you, but have scoliosis and herniated lumbar discs and some of my cervical discs are compressed causing nerve damage. I’ve gotten epidurals and they don’t get rid of the pain. 😖 do they work for you? I was such an active person before it’s so depressing and with lockdown I can’t go to PT and I’ve gained so much weight. Ugh, you’re not alone and I hope we heal soon.

Here is my story: Since I started moving around as a kid I basically didn’t do any sport at all and I had no muscles at all. I would also carry really heavy bags and purses on one side. One day my mom was looking at some pictures of me and she noticed that something was wrong with my posture. She took me to a doctor and he diagnosed me with lumbar scoliosis at a 45 degree angle. For anyone who doesn’t know what scoliosis is, it’s basically a curvature in the spine. Mine was in my lower back which happens to 1% of female scoliosis patients. I saw so many doctors and finally found one who agreed to do m’y surgery. Anyways fast forward, I did a 7 hr surgery where they put 18 screws and 2 bars in my spine. After that I started experiencing a lot of pain. I was in and out of hospitals, physiotherapy sessions and gyms for literally 2 years. I was walking with a flat back, spread arms and legs and bent knees. Not to mention my back was bent and I couldn’t straighten it and nobody knew why. I was also bullied at school a lot and made fun of but I really didn’t give a shit about them. Also I was 12 at the time. Then one of my dads friends saw me walking one day and actually spoke to my dad. He was like something is definitely wrong with her surgery and even gave him the name of a doctor I could see. I saw him a couple of weeks later and he says she just has some loose screws and the bars need to be adjusted to allow me to have a normal curve in my spine as I had developed a flat back syndrome. He ordered an mri and a ct scan just to ensure he wasn’t missing anything. When he got the results, treatment was now much more complicated. I had developed spondylolysis and spondylolythesis which r 2 types of cracks in the spine. I was 15 back then and me and my family decided to get the surgery done in Canada. Finding treatment there was much more difficult and it took me a year a 3 doctors to be able to see him. He’s a doctor at the Toronto general and at sickkids hospital where I met him. He’s also a professor at the Toronto university. I literally cried at the first appointment when I was telling him about my hardships due to my condition and had him and my mom crying. It was a very emotional time for me. Fast forward to December of 2018, I was 16 and had booked my surgery for the end of November but had my surgery delayed last minute for 3 days in a row. Bear in mind that I was staying in the hospital with my mom. I lost hope and actually considered suicide since my doctor was supposed to travel and god knows when he was coming back. Also, when one of the residents came in to tell me that my surgery was cancelled the day before my doctor had to travel I tried to express my concerns and he told me to go write a complaint. Later I asked the nurses to call him since I wanted to talk to him. He came and I read the guilt on his face immediately. I literally spilt all my feelings in front of him and he really did try to help me because by the next morning there was an OR available for me to do my surgery. I was so happy I was literally crying on my way there. I remember the nurse coming in and saying we’ve got an OR ready and u gotta get ready bc they r literally in the elevator coming to pick u up. I can’t even remember how I got out of bed in that moment from the happiness that literally filled my body. I was under anesthesia for 9 hours and almost 2 years later I have never felt better. I just wanted to remind Eva that I’m literally feeling ur pain sis and I love you!!! Back surgery is really difficult. Take it from experience 👆. But this is what makes u stronger. I feel like I have grown so much since my surgery. I also had to miss 6 months of school where I had just started my IB diploma and I received my results which were record breaking. I was in national newspapers here and even did my own tv interview which was so nerve wrecking 😂😂 but u learn to grow from these experiences and it makes u unique. I love you and support u always and I pray to god that your recovery process is just as successful as mine and many others around the world ❤️❤️
