I found this set in 2021 at a garage sale for $50.00. The train itself was never built still in original poly bags. Each train car had its own bag with a picture of that particular build on the bag. The only drawback was the original small cars and truck were missing. And I couldn’t test it out for one of the curved tracks was missing. But after building the train I developed builders remorse because it was such an old set.😂lol

I think the problem with the Hogwarts Express is not the weight, as the 9V motor is heavy enough: It's the technic axles connecting the wheels of the locomotive. I removed them with my train and it runs so much smoother. Also bear in mind that the original HE waggons from the set you own need to be slightly modified for some curves, bc the 3L axle is too short for the needed distance between waggons. They do touch in S-curves and switch points and derail!
@brickstudiosYT

How would I remove the axles from the front engine with keeping the wheels on? And yeah I found out about the wagon connectors when I built my extra cars 😂

@@brickstudiosYT I mean the technic axles on the outside simulating the coupling rods :) As the wheels slightly turn in opposite directions when in a curve, they touch the rod with the outward facing side of the wheel.

I prefer batteries since my house is old so it doesn't have as many powerpoints/outlets/recepticles, whatever you like to call them, it just doesn't have many, my gaming room only has 1 SINGLE outlet, not even 2 sockets in one! So I use two 6 port power boards/power strips/surge pretectors, again, whatever you like to call them, and don't question my potato PC with a GTX 970, some 4th gen Intel I7, just don't question it, atleast it works, well it's running Windows 11 Pro on a 4th gen CPU, I thought you needed 8th gen, oh well.@@brickstudiosYT

I remember getting that set when i was a little kid, along with the switch tracks and cross track. Nowadays the pieces had split into the dusty collection. Still have everything, though; motor, speed dial, adapter, metal tracks. As for the question of battery vs 9V, since i never used battery, i say 9V, and yes, no worry about batteries and just simply plug into a wall (unless you experience a power outage). Those chrome pieces, i miss when lego made those.

The issue your Hogwarts Express is having isnt weight. Did you flip the lock on the Hogwarts Express? The train has a lock mechanism that prevents the front most wheels from turning freely when the lock is in the down position. I can see its down so the train isn't in "free mode". Try flipping the lock into free mode (lift it up.) If it still doesn't work it's because the wheels on the HE engine has no traction. but this is fixable using O bands from a hardware store (bring a wheel with you for size comparison for the right one to fit like a glove) then use it on the track .i have this HE and motorizing it was easy but that lock the set makes you build prevents the wheels from turning left and right

I grew up in the 90's and I honestly think LEGO train fans are the most nostalgia blinded fan base in existence. You guys remember how you could only have one train running? I hated having a LEGO train yard as a kid. You're also delusional if you think this or 4559 look better than the Orient Express or the Emerald Night, lol. I see people complain about the Orient locomotive changes - sure, but this thing doesn't even resemble a real train.

9V is actually really cool, but the main reason I think people prefer RC over 9V is that with powered tracks, you can reverse the track, it is expensive, and all the motors will run together at some time, that's why people prefer RC too because any model train fans out there know about DCC, and the Lego train RC series shows that very well. But if you can find and afford one, I would personally recommend the LEGO 12V system, it's awesome!

This was my first LEGO trainset as a child in 1999, still have it. And lots of other 9 volt trains. Funny how you are so excited opening the box, almost like myself when I got this trainset on my 7th birthday. I don’t like the battery powered trains, feels like we’re going back in time when there was 12 volt trains and 4,5 volt battery trains. I am also more fan of 90s design. Had a laugh when you said ‘90s instructions are so hard to follow’ 😂 the vehicle has instructions of 2 pages… now a simple City theme vehicle has a 30 page book… also funny how you got excited about the sunroof. It’s a cool piece but very common in the 80s and 90s. Was hard to watch you struggle with the hogwards express. I don’t think it was the weight on the motor, look at the 4561 locomotive really light weighted and easely pulling two long cars. In the video you can clearly see the big wheels of the steamlocomotive are not turning, causing a lot of friction. The Hogwards Express is just a really bad design in my opinion. First why don’t they just used the normal magnets for coupling? They work great sinds 1980! Second the passengercars of the real Hogwards Express have 4 axels with bogeys. On the sharp curves from LEGO that works better then two axels fixed, which cause friction on curves. It works better and would be more realistic. Third, AFOLs have made really realistic English steamlocomotives even in 6 stud wide. And the proffesional LEGO designers came up with this??? Okay enough complaining, In had fun watching your video and I subscribed

everyone svears by the 9 volt train system but I'm personally partial to the grey 12volt system. mostly because there was a controll unit for it that you could attatch modules to let you controll EVERY aspect of your train lay out from the trains to the lights and switches. and yeah the speed controller isnt' the expensive part in this set there were a lot of versions of it it's that cable thats the expensive part.

Battery powered is pretty good IMO. I jumped to powered-up straight from the blue-era 4.5V battery trains, and it works really well. With some experience from 'proper' model railroad I know that wall-plugged can have great advantages, but only if the system is digital so you can run multiple trains and power accessories directly off the track (which is always live). So: 9V Lego is fun, but certainly not better than the current RC battery trains.

For some reason I associated this train it with 90s aesthetic, movies like 5th Element, games like Unreal Tournament etc. Many videos about history of Lego trains are quite skeptical about this one, they're calling it weird. My Own Train was the series I was into but the problem was that it was damn near impossible to buy anything at the time. My parents barely knew how to use AOL mail and i was telling them i wanted a snowsweeper car that you could only get online. It ws just to small a theme for its time. Personally i think they need to go smaller. You can buy model train dioramas that fit in a suitcase and if they made a mini modular system for micro trains i think it could be big. Toss in blind boxes for special cars or engines too.

The in-laws have a large set of powered tracks with two controllers (power supplies) and trains and the kids love to play with them... ... and while it is of course beneficial to not need to cram in batteries into the train itself, the system has SERIOUS flaws: The first problem is that the cables from the controller to the tracks are flimsy, you trip over them which ruins them But MUCH more importantly is that if you have switches then you can NOT just design your network as you wish: Firstly, you can NOT build "loopbacks", meaning: all tracks need to re-connect "left rail to left rail and right-to-right", because else you basically connect the + to the - of the power supply. So you are rather limited in your design. Also depending on your setup, if you have two switches and two parallel tracks and you switch them to ONE track, the other track looses power. Also there's drop of voltage if you exceed a certain length or complexity of the setup. So all in all you are SEVERELY limited in your track design. I have never played with the battery-based systems, only with this track-powered, but I'm not too fond of this sytem. I imagine you are much more flexible with the battery powered systems.

Man, I had that train when I was younger; it's so disappointing they did away with powered rails, even if it means we can have multiple trains on the same track system. The battery op trains are just so much less powerful in how many cars they can pull.
@brickstudiosYT
@brickstudiosYT 11 ай бұрын
Well multiple trains can still run on the same track with 9v, they just all have to go the same speed. The power and speed are fairly close between the two, but batteries slowly die which makes the battery powered ones unreliable. Still, 9v is way better than battery powered.
@kauske
@kauske 11 ай бұрын
@@brickstudiosYT Running multiple motors on the same 9/12v track for any track powered model train actually cuts the effective power of each motor; interestingly enough. 2-3 on the same train would be a net gain, but 2-3 separate trains will slow everything down. The new Li-Ion power packs for the latest ones are -roughly- on par with the 9V; but I've compared the previous system that ran on AA batteries, and it was noticeably inferior; even with a brand new set of batteries. About the only advantage was the AA's were always stored in the loco, so it had more mass and could use more of its tractive effort; they also had rubber on the wheels as well. If you put a few of those ballast bricks they used to give with the real floating boats, and added some rubber bands to the 12/9v motors they could tug along a dozen cars with ease. With the current systems you could actually have multiple locos that give a significant boost to the train, but that's a lot of expensive powered up parts. One really has to wonder why LEGO as a company abandoned the 9V system, perhaps the cost of the metal railed tracks, or they wanted to offer the better control scheme that comes with self contained locomotives.

I think really the only reason people like this, is because the wall power allows for continuously running display tracks. That's something only very few people do, though, and the playability of these old sets is much worse than what you can do now, *especially* with the enhanced controller sets. Because these old sets: (1) can't do programmable movement (no stopping at stations automatically, no turning on lights in tunnels, etc.), (2) can't attach powered functions (lights, motorized doors, people even put cranes on MOCs) (3) multi-track operation (you need some advanced building techniques to make working sidings even). IMO, if you think about it even for a few minutes, you'll see why modern lego trains are just better in pretty much every respect except being able to literally run forever without recharging. And how bad is that really? You get days of playtime before a battery change.
@brickstudiosYT
@brickstudiosYT 11 ай бұрын
There's definitely pros and cons of both. The 9v system is actually compatible with power functions and Lego mindstorms, as long as you have the right cables. But yeah the newer trains are definitely easier to code for that sort of stuff but I do love not having to worry about batteries!

I think the reason it doesn't pull and push that well on the Hogwarts train is because the pins on that particular train doesn't put the rest of the train's weight on it (theres a little bit of up and down sway) it could be fixed by making the connecting plates thicker

I still have a whole bunch of this stuff in pretty pristine condition... mostly freight stuff, along with the Sante Fe set, I guess I should look into what that costs now

i Remember this train yes might be 98 or 99 its from, the one before this was in red and black and its from 94 95 or 96, i never got to experience much of the lego trains but i remember entire 90s and early 00s of lego`s since amd 37 now hehe but lego from 82/83-2002 or to 2004 had so many great sets and lots of great brick types :D

I always thought you had to build the train. The bright side about 9 volt, no batteries required. Unfortunately the downside is if a storm hits, and takes the power out, well, need I say more? The bright spot about battery powered is no worries if the power goes out while running the train. Idk I like them both even though I never had a lego set other than the hand power Hogwarts express that came out in 2001.

I got the set used btw, that's why it was mostly put together out of the box.

@@brickstudiosYT I know Lego train fans hate the battery being the power source, but look at it this way. Independent running if you have multiple trains. Also, if there's a thunderstorm that causes a power outage, well, at least you won't get too bored. I do plan on buying my first powered Lego train soon. IDK when. I would like to buy a steam set, but I may go with diesel or electric instead. You can buy rechargable batteries for them.

I purchased it from ebay. The seller only had 1, but you might be able to find another on there. You just gotta make sure everything works properly for around $200 and you'll be set. Thanks for asking!

so, the best about this is that it's powered by the wall? i was wondering what the title meant and the best passenger trains that i know are the 4558 Metroliner and the modular 4559 Shuttle Express. this blue one is ok but i always thought that it lacks something that the other 2 have.

Yeah, before the Lego 9v system was the 12v system, which had powered sections in the middle of each track instead of on the rails. Hopefully this answers your question!

I do not really like the fact that Lego use battery powered trans now. It is inconvenient to have to change them but with 9v you get much more space inside the trains without having th battery box and receiver in there
