Truly blind Souls playthoughs are pretty rare on KZbin and they're always great to watch, especially when the player 'gets it' as I think you do. You'll be constantly challenged, and learning from that is the key to being successful. I'm really looking forward to seeing how to progress. Don't be too worried about editing quite so much (although your editing is pretty good) if it's slowing you down too much.

Just to explain what happened with the "Slender Boy". Your swing traded with his throw animation. So your last swing did enough to kill him, but the animation for the grab had to finish. Not a very common interaction, but things like this can happen. Also certain enemies, (usually larger miniboss style encounters) don't respawn. So the game was working as intended.

Subscribed! As a game designer, videos like this are EXTREMELY helpful for me, as it's rare to find footage of a true newbie documenting their experience with a new game genre. From Software have some truly fantastic designers, however they've always struggled a bit with the classic JRPG "throw a bajillion mechanics and menus at the player before they know what's going on" strategy. Seeing what you pick up on and what you miss is extremely informative! My major piece of advice is to read item descriptions, pay attention to environmental storytelling, listen CAREFULLY to NPC dialogue, and *CHECK THE MESSAGES LEFT BY OTHER PLAYERS.* From Software's design language is _EXTREMELY_ subtle (read: obtuse) compared to the industry standard, so it's super easy to miss many of the game's quests, items, stories, bosses, and hidden areas because you didn't think to use a specific gesture in a specific location while wearing a specific hat. (For context of how subtle they can be, in the first video, you missed one or two chests in the Gatefront Ruins!) Next, the messages left by players is how the game gets away with being so cryptic. While not always trustworthy (they love to pretend every wall has a secret behind it), if you see a bunch of player messages in one place, give them a read! That location may be relevant to a quest, or have some BS secret only accessible via some obscure mechanic! (Unless the messages say something like: "try finger, but hole," "fort night," "mist, or beast," or "try jumping".) Lastly, this game has a LOT of branching NPC questlines, however they're all extremely easy to miss, and a few can become unavailable if you progress the game before fulfilling some of their requirements. As a rule of thumb, check back with (named) NPCs every so often to see if they have anything new to say to you, pay attention to any items in the "key" tab of your inventory because those are often quest-related items, and remember that if NPC moves from their location, it means they're PROBABLY waiting for you to progress their quest somewhere else in the world.
@christopherjackson26852 ай бұрын
I agree with what you’ve said but I think you’re missing a crucial point: FromSoft does this intentionally. By leaving things so obtuse, they have created a massive community of fans who help each other out. There’s no game in the world that generates the amount of content that Souls games do, and it’s because of how vague and obtuse they are with their games mechanics and story.

The thing you say they have trouble with is one of the biggest reasons these games are so good, i have some advice for you since you say you are a game developer. Try to look at games not like a dev but like a player especially the games you make yourself, that is what miyazaki does and why he is arguably the greatest dev around. Dude just plays his games before he releases them and views everything from the perspective of a player, after the game has released he stops playing so he doesnt risk ruining it with things he thinks he can improve because he cant help but see it more like a dev after its been released. Im not trying to imply you dont already do this, but i feel like this is a problem for most devs these days, they look at things from a professional perspective too much, like how can i achieve this thing i want to have in my game in stead of what would i enjoy as a player in my game if that makes sense.

@@neverbeforegg It's called poise in game. Every enemy has an invisible poise meter (kinda like a health or stamina bar). Every time you land an attack, their poise takes damage with heavier weapons and certain attacks (RT attacks and jumping attacks) doing more poise damage. If you don't land an attack for a bit, the meter starts to refill. If you deplete it, they are staggered and are open to a critical at the spot that is glowing. You're doing great! Here is a quick tip that will come in really handy: there are small golden trees scattered throughout the map that will have a golden seed at the base of it, you can use those seeds to increase your healing/mana flask numbers and also there are quite a few churches in the game also scattered around the map that have "sacred tears" which will increase the level of your flask meaning it will help you regain more heath and mana, there is a special church in limgrave that has a special flask which will give you access to a variety of effects that come in really handy during combat, you can put 2 special tears in the special flask, these special tears are mostly found at the base of the "minor erdtrees", the big golden tree is the erdtree and smaller ones that are also quite large and visible from a distance are called minor erdtree. hope this helps on your journey.

tip! one of the most important things to learn in souls games is that in most cases you want to dodge _into_ attacks. enemies have deceptively long reach and/or chain attacks together, so if you try to roll away from them you'll still get hit at the end but if you dodge _towards_ the limb they're swinging at you, you'll i-frame through the attack and take no damage (bonus: this also tends to land you behind their back with an opportunity to punish)

A small explanation about the 'stun' and how it works during the bloodhound fight: You basically have a stagger- having an enemy recoil from your move- possibly cancelling his own move to kind of shrug back like you do if you get hit. Then there's the 'stun'. Every enemy has a hidden poise value, something your character has as well if you check your stats or status. Poise indicates how much you can 'tank' before staggering, high poise such as for example 60 poise lets you trade attacks more frequently without staggering out of an attack yourself. Breaking an enemies poise or stance as its often called, makes a harsh sounding sound and well stuns him as you called it. This stun often lets you backstab or critically hit an enemy for damage, some times being more massive then other times. You can break an enemies stance by being aggressive, bigger hits often do more poise damage and the enemy will regain his poise over time if not attacked. Hitting large enemies' heads often do more damage and poise damage in general. Hope this helps even if its a little overwhelming ^^ Also great video! Been really enjoying this type of voice over type of videos!

Some handy things that will hopefully help (No Spoilers), sorry if it's been repeated a bunch by other people: -On the map, there will be locations marked with dark spots with an orange/red aura (there is one in the Northwestern corner of Agheel Lake, the lake with the giganto crabs on the eastern end). These marks are mines which have upgrade materials which spawn as white and yellow crystals/rocks -The upgrade materials have numbered tiers. So a Smithing Stone [2] is higher than a Smithing Stone [1]. It can be easy to confuse tier of stone with quantity. And Somber Smithing Stones are different from the regular variety -Weapons scale with a letter system like a tier list, with S being highest and A just under that etc. When you get weapons you want to scale the damage of, focus on the stat with the better scaling letter. They are shown in the same menu as the requirements to weild the weapon. Ashes of War can change the scaling of weapons to better suit your wants, but weapons tend to scale best with certain stats (fast weapons scale with Dexterity and big slow weapons with Strength) -Similar to the mines, there are obelisk marks in the gray areas of the map (once you've travelled the area enough to clear the fog). These are map piece locations -You may not encounter it for a while, but you can jump over the shockwave portions of attacks attacks (stomps/slams where visible shockwaves hit or stagger you). They are more easily jumped than avoided by invulnerability frames from rolling -You have the right idea about those golden lines coming from Graces. They vaguely point towards graces closer to story progress, but exploration is key to success. -one of the tricks to dodging is wait for the attack to come forward. Many enemies delay their draw back animation to catch you after a roll. You have pretty good invulnerability window (it's not 100% accurate, but rule of thumb is you're invincible while your feet aren't on the ground during the roll animation) -Endurance will give you more stamina and equip load, so you can wear heavier armor without going into Heavy Load, which will severely hinder your dodge ability. Medium Load is a great balance between speed and good protection from armor. 20-25 Endurance is generally high enough for most builds unless you want the heaviest armors or largest weapons -Stuns on bosses happen from posture damage. Light, fast attacks don't do a lot, the spinning slash/storm stomp does an okay amount. Heavy attacks (Right trigger/R2) can be charged to do more posture damage, but you may find smaller weapons still don't stun very often. There is a signature sound when larger bosses are staggered, much like the back stab, you can get very close to the glowing spot (sometimes hard to spot, sometimes very obvious), and press right bumper (R1) to do a critical attack -Some weapons have a status effect. It will be listed at the bottom near the scaling. Examples such as Bleed (50) or Frost (45) are the type and amount of buildup they apply. The statuses can be very handy, but any enemies that appear to be ghosts/phantoms/illusions/otherwise ethereal (or made entirely of stone) will likely be immune to them. Ashes of War can be used to add the effects to weapons that don't naturally have them -You will be disappointed if you expect a clear, laid out story. FromSoft doesn't really do that. An incredible story is there, but you won't just happen across it in general play. You will be very unlikely to complete any NPC quests or unlock alternate endings without outside resources. That isn't a slight against you personally, but the nature of the cryptic storytelling. The amount of story they give is just enough to be intriguing -Vigor is essential to a smoother experience. As a general guide: aim for 30 as soon as you get the stats for the weapon you want (early game damage comes from upgrades more than stats), then aim for 40 once you are in the big shallow water area (you'll know when you are there, it's impossible to miss), then 50 once the grass is yellow and you are very close to the big golden tree. You can go as high as 60, but you get diminishing returns after that. -Damage stats (Strength/Dexterity for weapons and Intelligence/Faith for spells) scale up to 80, though if you want to spread them out a bit to experiment or have a more diverse build (like getting some intelligence to pick up some spells), you won't miss too much damage going to 55-60 and redoing your stats is possible after a certain part of the game. It is called "re-birthing" -Spells must be attuned at a Grace and cast with a correlating catalyst. Staves for sorceries (int spells) and seals for incantations (faith spells). Memory stones found around the world give you more spell slots Hopefully that wasn't overwhelming. There's just a lot I wish the game communicated more clearly

I think this series is really cool. To see a first time souls player moment to moment takes me back. My first souls game was dark souls 1 but my best friends was Elden Ring. Lol I largely imagine this to be very close to what his experience probably was. Keep it going man. I think there are a lot of people that want to live vicariously through you to re experience their first elden ring/souls playthrough.

Loving this series so far! Small tip -- on the right-hand side of the Equipment screen there's your "Equip Load" with two numbers. These are how much weight in equipment (armor + weapons) your character is carrying and their max amount, respectively. Below that it will say either Light Load, Med. Load, or Heavy Load. Try not to get to "Heavy Load", as that will make your character dodge more slowly. If you want to carry more stuff, leveling Endurance will up that maximum (as well as your Stamina, like Vigor does with your Health) That said, enjoy your journey into and learning about The Lands Between!

Great content, really enjoying the perspective of someone new to the genre. People already said this before, but i cant stress this enough: Read item/equipment descriptions no matter how mundane the item looks. At best, you'll learn some new mechanic or interaction with the world, at worse, you'll learn more about the lore and context of what's happening. Keep up the good work!

Glad to see a new Tarnished on the path of Lordship! Allow me to give you some advice! I'm sure you might have noticed small golden trees around the map! Those have Golden Seeds under them, which you can use to upgrade the number of your flasks. Also, be sure to visit churches when you find them, they have Sacred Tears, which are used to upgrade how much your flasks restore. There's a three Churches in Weeping Peninsula, one in Ailing Village, and two more in the Southwest of the map! More exist around the Lands Between, so good luck! And...I just noticed someone said this already. Another tip then! Spirit Ashes are a normal reward at the end of small dungeons. There's a lot of these around the world, so exploration is key to finding a summon which works for you! Good luck!

First things first, really enjoying the content! As a souls veteran it's been really cool seeing a newcomer explore the genre and the journey has been presented in a very cool way. It may be worth mentioning a couple of things about ashes of war for you here, the spinning slash that you have on your curved swords actually has a follow-up input as well, which can make a pretty powerful attack chain, and then for straight sword that you have Storm Stomp on, the default ash of war "Square Off" is really powerful too, it has you adopt a stance and then input a light or heavy attack for an exceptionally powerful variant of those attacks. Another thing to note is that you can wield your weapon with two hands by holding Y and tapping your light attack button for whichever weapon you're wanting to two-hand, which increases your effective strength with that weapon by 50%, this also allows you to use weapons you may not necessarily be strong enough to use. E.G, if you have 12 strength and a weapon that requires 18 strength to use, you can wield that weapon with two hands but if you were to one hand it, it wouldn't be effective!

I love this playthrough of yours, I love to see you learn, playing the game :D I can't wait to see the next part :) Just ONE quick tip: If you equip a weapon, look at their "scaling", like "Str: B" or "Dex: A" etc. these stats are actually increasing the strenght of Our weapons, NOT the strenght stat by itself! Your Dual Blades are Dexterity weapons, so they get stronger by levelling dexterity. If you find a new weapon, always check their scaling :)

Cool series! Keep it up. Advice from a souls vet -- when you run into a wall (aka a very difficult boss you cant seem to get past), just dont give up. Its hard to overstate how much you can "level up" your own skill by getting more play time. Something will feel impossible and then suddenly "click" for you. It's part of the experience and everyone goes through it!

I randomly found your video about starting your Elden Ring journey and I love it so far! Similar to you, I had never played any From Software game but I watched my husband play it and I was super intrigued with the world. Despite having barely any experience with open world games or action RPGs and generally sucking at them, I was determined to try it and see how far I could get. Towards the beginning, most of my deaths came from learning the controls and forgetting which button to press lol, but my husband was able to help walk me through how to play Elden Ring. After about 120 hours of gameplay (I got insanely addicted and got every single site of grace), I was able to become Elden Lord! I've also finished up the DLC and am currently on NG+, where I am challenging myself to do a dex focused build with a bit of magic splashed in and not using summons. Watching your journey really reminds me of my journey and how I (painfully) learned a lot of the game's mechanics and how to deal with different enemies/bosses. I also would do the tea bagging crouch after beating bosses lmao. I love your commentary and can-do attitude, so please keep it up! I will gladly watch future updates. As a heads up, the DLC is really REALLY hard. I would generally recommend being lvl 150+ before trying it, but you can do whatever you're comfortable with. It took me around 80-100 hours after scouring for everything I could find.

OK, here are some essential tips: stunning an enemy lets you land a critical strike. Second, you stun an enemy by depleting its invisible posture bar. It slowly recovers, so jump attacks, charged attacks, ect In quick succession are critical. Knowing which attacks to punish with your own attacks is a must to beat this game
@Edhelvar2 ай бұрын
Loving your videos, always fun to someone to get into the genre! Just one small tip that I think you still haven't figured out and it's kind of important to realize earlier than later, weapons's DPS increase differently according to their attributes. For example your Scimitars rank with Strength and Dexterity, since they have a D in both. But the Bloodhound's Fang has a D in STR and a C in DEX, which means it gets more powerfull when ranking in DEX than in STR. Just something to look out for when choosing weapons. You can check that in the weapon description, in Attribute Scaling. And it goes D < C < B < A < S.
