Think you'll need too replace the thermalpaste on cpu & gpu, clean out the cpu cooler from dust too regain some of that performance. Dust inside of the fan housing blocking the exhaust probably as well after all these years. Do you have the original charger as well ? Some laptops if they don't detect some specific signal on the negative pin or positive pin might throttle due too power draw not being verified. You can try crystalcpuid & see if you can bypass the throttling in that case on the cpu at least if you aren't on a original charger. should be called enhanced intel enhanced speedstep or something like that in crystalcpuid. Perhaps you'll see better performance if you run it in the garage during winter again like you did with the overclocking of the fx cpu & your main editing rig a while ago.

I have the Dell version of this with an Intel Core 2 extreme QX9300 with 12 gb of ram and an 1920 x 1200 screen. It's a Dell Precision m6400. Pretty top of the line from late 2008 to early 2009. Still my favorite laptop with mostly metal construction. It's an excellent gaming laptop for older games made up till about 2011 to 2012.

I don't remember how to do it but I think that you can soft mod a quadro fx 2700m to a 9700m, that might help gaming performance since the geforce drivers are more optimized for games.

i got a Dell Precision m4500 with a i7 q820 4c/8t its from 2009 i still use it for Blender and its not horrible, no throttling even on a 80 hour animation render it just keeps all 8t pinned at 100% and i can still watch youtube without any stuttering , i put Linux Mint in it and it now renders faster then my i7 2720QM. I can't complain

Look at the slightly newer Elitebooks like the 8770w. They make awesome budget "gaming laptops" especially with a Quadro k3000 or better.

I have the same machine with the upgraded GPU I believe the FX 3700 (which is equivalent to a GTX 280/285M). I used it my last year of college when Lenovo lost my Y510p at the repair depot. It has an external giant battery that plugs into the bottom of the machine that was very useful.

Haha, I've got a 8740W for FREE from an old desk job where the old equipment of the designers was written off and I got my hands on one of them. still use it mainly as a media center kind of thing that's mobile...in their time they were the things people like me dreamed of, lol. Today it still plays movies and music perfectly, usually connected to a tv and/or speaker setup. You paid 20 bucks for the lesser model, sucker ! :D

I've got a Dell precision m6300 I still use for basic stuff, it's a Intel core 2 extreme x7800 2.6ghz dual core with a Quadro FX 3800m 512mb and 4gb ram. Still amazed it runs windows 10 nice has a 128gb ssd with a 1tb in an expansion slot that replaced the CD drive. Plays some older titles of games really good actually too and can do cs go

That would have been a beast back in the day. You should check the BIOS to see if there are any cpu overclocking options. The Old Dell XPS m1730 with intel extreme cpu's had overclocking options. The non extreme cpu had no overclock option in the BIOS. Maybe HP followed suit????

Honestly, as a portable media box, that thing is pretty beast for 20 bucks. It isn't sleek or sexy by today's standards but it'll plow through just about anything video related and the screen even has a decent resolution. Slap an SSD in that and you got yourself a pretty functional basic computer.

That's actually a great deal if you're looking for a portable DVD player that you can also use as a storage device for all your videos, pictures, documents and stuff. I suppose you could also use it as a emulation machine. Can probably handle 8 bit and 16-bit systems. the only downside I can think of is the need for being plugged in the whole time because I'm pretty certain the battery life is abysmal

Luckily you can overclock the CPU, and maybe even the GPU. The performance is similar to my Intel HD 4000 graphics from 2013, though Fortnite on my laptop is much better. I'm getting a CRT soon, so 480p games will actually look decent and maybe become smoother.
