Another way that amateurs are helping out the serious researchers with telescope time that they maybe can't afford. Even help them with their pet projects! What a time we live in! 👍😊 The only thing missing is the sense of accomplishment from taking your own image data with your own equipment that you setup and tuned yourself.

Thanks Cuiv for sharing this. Quite an epiphany. It has dawned suddenly on me that it's the activity surrounding the collection of data that I enjoy far, far more than the final processing which with increasing AI involved leaves me stone cold. I can see a future where image data is automatically processed by autonomous AI by a single mouse click. This online service provides a library of images but takes away all the effort and enjoyment of collecting one's own sub-frames 'warts and all'. I can see how it can appeal to some enthusiasts and let them work on data they could never achieve otherwise.

I want to work towards creating my own tool towards creating such a one-click type of solution, presumably on top of programs like PixInsight. For myself, I’m interested mostly in EAA. I don’t have any interest in doing live optical viewing through the telescope. I can’t keep my body still enough to be able to do that. So, EAA it is. And it doesn’t matter as much to me if I am remote from the telescope in my backyard, or if the telescope is remote somewhere else in the world. Slogging through processing the data with programs like PixInsight is not something I really look forward to, but I’m willing to learn how to do it, if that is what is required. But developing tools to help automate that kind of processing with PixInsight, that’s something I would enjoy.

Yeah, for me personally it's imaging those things which are visible from your own backyard and 'seeing' things that are there but which are not immediately visible. That's what drives me.

Not really for me Cuiv I'm afraid. Its the sense of achievement for me by building up my own rig setting it up in my back yard, choosing and capturing the target etc. that I follow this hobby for. The processing, while of some interest to me, is really a means to an end. But for people who enjoy the processing side of things I'm sure it could be very popular. As for the 365 day cloudy season we have in the UK, I just have to make the best of the clear nights I get. I hope to be able to mount one or two of my scopes permanently to save time setting up and I have a grab and go rig built up ready to use. The whole idea is to be able to capture the maximum amount of data possible when breaks in the cloud permit, but it does of course also mean that I may need many sessions to collect enough data to get a really good image. But the funny thing is crazy as it sounds I like the challenge.
@CuivTheLazyGeek

Yep, I totally get it and I agree - and it's still a decent tool/offering for people who struggle with their equipment, or just want something else to play with while waiting for clear nights :)

Cuiv, great post! Sorry for the long stream of consciousness here... There is something very satisfying about building your own rig and capturing your data-heck, even watching each image get displayed during the session! On the flip side, living in the Midwest of the USA, I'm lucky to get enough clear nights to capture 15-20 targets per year. So, for under $300/year, you can either download an hour's worth of images for about $2.00 or a bundle of data for about $15.00. With the silver plan, the cheapest "premium" plan that allows you to download bundles, you also get 240 credits per year. That means you can buy about 16 bundles if that's your thing per year... Not bad, considering that I probably spend 3 or 4 times that amount buying "stuff" each year to perfect my rig. The added benefit is that if you want, you can either buy or target something you have been working on at home and get dark sky luminance data to add to your own data. As for the less-than-perfect data issue when buying bundles without being able to examine each sub, that is an issue, but I seldom capture perfect data because of my crummy skies.

Hahaha, it sounds like the weather I'm getting here too. Last night everything looks nice and clear, set up my gear, got my shooting plan ready for the night, and all I got was a huge log file full of fail to plate solve due to the clouds. When the weather is not the issue, the cables decide to resign, or the electricity goes for a nap time, connections quite and even bugs use the scope's hood to enjoy the night! Then the CFO finds out that the cooled CMOS you purchased costed a few thousands of dollars and you end up sleeping with the dog for a few nights....this hobby is for the brave not for the faint of heart!

However this was the first time it was clear since the last time I did some imaging, which was at May 12 when I did M81/M82. Since then it's been cloudy non-stop. Seems like this Spring will be the most cloudy/rainy ever.

Who owns the copyright on the finished picture? I don't feel that I'm the photographer unless I take the picture myself, or at least directly control the taking of it. Otherwise I'm just the darkroom technician -- who may be an artist, but not the first artist in the creative process. Nonetheless, this looks like a great way to develop one's processing skills (and for the community to develop processing technology). It may also be a way to get high-quality custom-processed images to meet a research need.

Yes, it's totally OK but I find it lacks soul. The interest of this hobby is to be able to create beautiful images, of course, but it is also to show others what can be seen from our garden in the middle of the city/suburbs. It impacts people more than saying that you processed images that are not your own. - "Hey people, I made this beautiful cake!" - "Oh wow, it looks amazing!" - "Thanks! I actually just decorated it. The cake itself is from the bakery down the street."

I have another thing that I would have hoped from Telescope Live. I think that getting acces to stacked frames is in a lot of time way better. I know you dont get that much control iver the processing but in most of the case I dont think I would do a much better job at pre-processing. And that way we could download less data and be right in the fun of it. Also I believe that pre-processing can be hard on the computer if you do a lot of if, especialy on the SSD that have a limited lifespan based on the amount of writing and deleting you put them throught. Thanks for making us discover that service in detail, as always great video overall.
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 2 ай бұрын
That's actually a very good point - there is a redeeming feature though: all frames are long and data is high quality, so there are few subframes, and so stacking is quite fast! Still, you're right in terms of the volume of data downloaded, an initial stack would be great!

I agree with your assessment of the user interface - it's probably this way because they are shifting from selling time on a telescope to raw data. Hopefully they'll figure this out. I have signed up to kick the tire (like you, too many cloudy nights ...) and I have been unable to find the optical (L)RGB filter specfics for the images I've downloaded. I think they should either include a file with all the technical specs (telescope focal length, aperature, filter types (ie: what brand, etc as this is needed for a complete specification for spectrophotometric calibration) and all the other bits we should know. Alternately, put this in the fits file - currently each image does provide the filter type (ie: R,G,B etc) but not the make and model that PixInsight uses. Probably doesn't make too much of a difference, but it would be nice to have.

Here is a plus that I felt was a bit glossed over (or missed it?) - access to the Southern Hemisphere!!! I've recently been shopping for a "forever" mount (considering AP, SB, 10 Micron - something with absolute encoders). Now I have no idea if I would ever drop this much on the hardware (only to use it - well not so often). But to put things in perspective Gold service for 28 years equates to the cost of one of these mounts, assuming frozen pricing. Totally get the satisfaction of buying configuring your own equipment - but the access to quality skies in both hemispheres is compelling.

Great overview of this Quiv. For me building my own telescope, making my own pictures, dealing with the problems, is a huge part of the fun. For me this is like buying someone's raw images when he went to Iceland, so yeah it's nice to process those images but you are missing the biggest fun/experience of the hobby. But if you really get desperate than yes why not, it's just for the fun and it should always be mentioned when showing this kind of data, in my opinion though.

I subscribed to Telescope Live for a year or two back in 2021. It was a bit different service then. I found I never felt like the images were "mine", because I didn't actually capture the data. Image processing is my least favorite part of astrophotography, so while it's nice to be able to get high quality data of targets, being left with the processing didn't motivate me to use the data consistently. I wish them all the best though. Thanks Cuiv I was wondering the ins and outs of TS live 🙂 Havent had a clear night in a while and was looking at alternatives. Some area in the US have been bad where some people just gave up and sold their stuff. I would like to try imaging a specific target one day that I just don't have either the aperture or equipment to do for some citizen science.

Yep, I think such services are a good complementary tool to a full rig - although I fully understand people who don't like such services and would never want to use them!

Are you covering your equipment while not using it ? Or dismantle equipment back I to house?

It's under covers! Dismantling is too much work!

It's great that you can download and process data from some fantastic instruments that only the the wealthier amateurs could afford--or for that matter, world class instruments like the Hubble or Webb. However, the challenge and thrill of my amateur astrophotography is collecting imagery from my own driveway with my own meager equipment. It will never match downloaded data, but it is mine to claim.

I subscribed for several months a few years ago. I used the custom session a couple of times and downloaded image sets quite a few times. The results were just OK with the very expensive custom sessions. Some of the image sets were very good, others OK. The subscription got old if you were not actively using the site. The owner's communications were OK, courteous but "unfriendly." Maybe a bad day or two. You had several very good suggestions regarding calibration frames/previewing/etc. The site definitely has its place in AP but could be improved.

Very interesting to hear direct feedback! It will be interesting to see how the site gets improved, they were taking notes though afaik :)

Sounds very interesting and provides plenty of opportunity to learn image processing on images that are taken with high spec equipment. For me, unfortunately the processing aspect of astrophotography is the least fun. I like to take the images, I like to fiddle with my equipment, but processing them is where I get very lazy. I bet I still got some stacks of subs somewhere that I never processed because I forgot.

Hahaha I completely understand, and from my perspective I'm the same - overall though it's good to have access to such a tool for those who need it, or want to use it in addition to their rig :)

Hi I'm not sure I think it might be something with the motherboard. The am5 stopped recognising the Asiair. I thought it first it may have been a damp problem but it's back in the shop and may need a new motherboard coming from China!

Hi Cuiv I don't want to take advantage but I would just like to ask a question if that's ok. As you know my am 5 is dead and the shop are having no luck communicating with zwo. If I swap to an ioptron is that going to give me compatibility issues with an Asiair and zwo cameras? Grateful for any thoughts Stuart

Really appreciate your reviews and videos Cuiv, but for me this feels like cheating. Most of the fun is playing with your gear, learning how to get the best out of what you have and figuring out the nuisances. But I suppose there are people who find the creativity of processing more interesting than the blinding frustrations of operating your own gear…

Yep I completely understand - although it doesn't feel like cheating to me, as much as simply focusing on a single aspect of the hobby: processing, while being aware that this is the only thing we're doing. So I don't begrudge people enjoying the service at all! As long as they disclose who took the images if they publish their images! I personally love to gather my own data from Tokyo as a challenge, but I can see how this can be a complementary tool :)

Cuiv, I love your work and all the content you create. But, please do not accept every sponsorship. I gave up on TelescopeLive a year ago as their frames (as you mentioned was not good). After watching your video, tried to give them another chance, downloaded a bundle. No preview (red flag), and no obvious bad calibration. This is from their best Telescope in Spain, with 64MPix newly replaced camera. To my surprise, not only they were not even close to claimed numbers (it was 1MPix) but also awful unusable data. My phone can take better shots than that probably. I know its our responsibility to check and not being scammed, but its a part of trusting channel. I personally trust you and your work, and as a result a part of that trut will move toward what you sponsor. Thanks for your great work.

Hello - since you watched the video, you know I refused the sponsorship/ambassadorship (like I've refused all ambassadorships offered to me in the past), and I was very honest about my experiences both positive and negative (half of the video is dedicated to the negative, as you noted). That said, what you describe sounds like a technical issue for me, and if I were you I would contact support on this! I will keep rejecting such ambassadorships, and will keep honest in my reviews, as always!
