Regarding the ending, the music gets sucked into a radio and then transitions into "Wish You Were Here," which also starts playing on the radio. You can then hear someone sit down next to the radio, pick up a guitar, and begin playing along. That's when "Wish You Were Here" begins properly.

Suddenly, the sound went real low. I got up to check my stereo to find out what happened. I was checking the speaker cables and whatever. I really thought something was wrong. Then I heard the acoustic guitar and the cough. I finally caught on. That was the way the music was intended. A friend told me that the music was getting sucked into the radio and that led into to Wish You were Here.

The reason the song ends the way it does, is because it leads in to the next song (Wish You Were Here). You got it right! When the music switches at the very end, it becomes a song on the radio. As it fades out, you can hear the listener switching the channel until he end up on an acoustic guitar riff that's goes from a song on the radio to someone playing in the "room" that you're in. When you start your full album journey, you'll really enjoy the way Pink Floyd transitions their songs. They are really a one of a kind band.

Besides 'Great gig in the sky'... the song 'Have a cigar' also had vocals from someone who was not a member of Pink Floyd... After the band recorded 'Have a cigar', they didn't think they had the vocals right... David Gilmour sang it and it was "too subtle"... Roger Waters sang it and it was "too low"... So, they decided to ask British folk singer Roy Harper (who was nearby during the studio sessions) if he wanted to give it a shot - and it sounded great w/ Harper's vocals. In 1975 Pink Floyd was coming off the massive success of 'Dark side of the Moon'... and were unsure which way to go musically... The resulting album 'Wish you were here' included an epic song 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' in several parts - it was dedicated to Pink Floyd's founder Syd Barrett, who had disappeared from public view in 1970... There was a major development during the sessions for "Shine on..." in the studio - a weird guy w/ a shaved head, shaved eyebrows and an overweight frame, appeared to see Pink Floyd... Gimour, Waters, Wright and Mason didn't recognize him at first but they soon realized that it was Syd Barrett. He was out of his mind, apparently "jumping up and down and brushing his teeth..." The members of Pink Floyd were overcome emotionally to see their lost friend and bandmate in such bad shape... He hung around the band for a day and disappeared again... They never saw Syd Barrett again. Ultimately, the album 'Wish you were here' was one of Gilmour and Wright's favorite Floyd records (Wright said, "I will listen to that album for pleasure, as not many of the Floyd records I can...") However, Gilmour and Waters were clashing creatively over the album's vision and eventually, Waters' ideas won out. The album cover depicted two men in business suits shaking hands and one of them was on fire (It was real BTW) ... The photo was a dig at the music industry - the man on fire was 'burned' by the music business. They had the songs - 'Welcome to the machine'... and 'Have a cigar' ... about the band's early experiences w/ the music industry and it was not a fond memory apparently. People did see the band name Pink Floyd in the 60's and wondered who 'Pink' was... Syd Barrett was the star of the band in their early days... but when he was out of Pink Floyd in 1968, there was no one to fill the void he left behind... (People would come up to the band after shows in 1968 and ask, "Where's Syd?") Waters, Gilmour and Wright were the main guys and none of them had that 'frontman' quality or personality... Gilmour recalled that they didn't have a John Lennon/ Paul McCartney duo like The Beatles... or Roger Daltrey/ Pete Townshend duo like The Who... Pink Floyd had a grumpy-looking bass player and a shy guitarist, so the band chose to become faceless and let the music do the talking. It turned out to be a blessing - when David Gilmour brought Pink Floyd back on tour in 1987, Roger Waters was not there anymore and no one seemed to care that he was gone.

It was planned to be sung by Roger, but he, exhausted from the long recording sessions of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, wasn't convinced he could do justice to the song; David also declined to play the vocals, thinking that the style of the song was not suitable for his singing. When I first heard this. Many moons ago. I think fourteen. My friend asked. Which one is Pink? Dude. I replied don't worry about it. Just Breathe in the air. Maybe it was just the lunatic in my head. Lol.

Love it! Keep going down the rabbit hole. Next up, from the division bell, you'll love these track one and two, cluster one and what do you want from me. Need to listen to them concurrently as they merge together. Rock on!

I've heard that they never did it live... can't really say, since I only did see them only once, in 1987. But I had the pleasure to hear it by a cover band (called Eclipse) that were really good. And it's even better live, just to say. 😊 Ok, forget about the previous sentence, I just googled it and had my answer... 😆 "We call it riding the gravy train" and you hear this "music industry" train in the background, eating musicians as it speeds on... amazing song.

You are quite spot on with the ending really. The song turns into hearing it on the radio and then the channel is changed and wish you were here starts. EPIC TRANSITION!!!

GREAT reaction Stacey!! This song is a real banger, BUT your journey is not complete until you hear the song that comes before this...Welcome To The Machine! It will blow your mind with a sonic tour de force! The meaning of this song will become even clearer when Machine is reviewed...that machine is the music industry...and yes, Cigar is them dealing with the 'suits' - and it was a legitimate question they had posed to them "which one's Pink". You totally get it! Cheers!!

The ending of "have a cigar" runs right into and transitions into the AM radio sounding part of the song "wish You were here"! The lyrics have to do with Rodger Waters sarcasm regarding record executives pretending to love the band when all they care about is money!! And their love of only money shows in the line "we're so happy we can hardly count"!!

Stacey you are one of the few who actually get this music and the message. I just wish more people in the new generation could be exposed to this art , and use it as a reference point to what music could be. Your reactions are excellent thanks .

I think I know what you mean Stacy, regarding how you relate to the composition of some Pink Floyd songs, and in particular this one. They are masters at setting up various points of tension in their compositions that somehow ultimately translate into a feeling of cohesiveness. At least that's the only way I can describe it. Thanks for this one, always enjoy. Weird, I just had a deja vu relating to writing this comment.

Stacey love your channel, you are awesome, I think it would be cool as hell if when you did a song and group review if you wore one of their rock t shirts. Just would be the cherry on top of already really great content...
