I watch Rick, Pete, Good Good, Bob does sports for the bants...I now watch Iona for the golf and commentary/shot thought processes. Your Driver reminds me of my old Haig ultras with screws which i used for 20yrs until i moved to Asia and everyone at Sentosa golf club S'Pore just laughed.Now have a 9.5degree Nike driver which magic.😅

Brought back the memories of my junior golf days, using a persimmon wood Iona. Brilliant ball striking as well. I must say if I hit the ball like you I’d have less dummy spits out there too. Great to see you taking a persimmon out Iona, and you got some very respectable yardages from it. I have a similar Titleist driver and the head is quite heavy so it rewards a smoother swing. If you like old clubs, my channel might interest you as it covers mainly UK made clubs from the 1930s to the 1980s.

Hi Iona, Your performance with the Persimmon driver was outstanding! I would love to see driver sizes rolled back - but yeah I grew up playing Persimmon drivers, small Balata balls, and when the first "metal woods" came out the head sizes were so much smaller than now! I am not fond of feeling like I am swinging a frying pan! I loved that you could take your dog along - wish we had courses her in South Africa where that was allowed. In the main cities and towns over here it is uncommon to even be able top play a round by yourself, other than sometimes a quick 9 holes at sun-up or just before sunset if you are lucky. Good luck for your AIG Women's Open Qualifying tomorrow!

another gem of a video. I learned my golf when it was all persimmon woods. I mainly used my 4 wood off the tee and you could tell I mainly hit out of the heel because the wood was wearing down!

wonderful blog, and great play with clubs you don't know. That would have been an excuse for most of us for playing bad, but 1 over? Great result, well done! Nice to finally see your dog, she's behaving wonderfully! We had a Maremmano, but sadly she passed away two months ago for kidney problems. I could never bring her out to golf with me with the character she had, had she seen a cat or a rabbit or - god fobid! - another dog on the course, it would have ended in a total nightmare! We still miss her very much, every day, so sad. But yours is very brave and she listens too... Great series, keep it up!

Love your dog....I have yellow lab too. About to take him for his morning walk in the golf course. He rides with me sometimes when I play but it's been too hot here lately. But an early walk is doable. Plus he cools off in the lake. I played during the persimmon days. No desire to go back to those. Modern equipment still makes the game fun at 69 years of age.

That driver needs to stay in the bag!! I bought a set of vintage Wilson 1200 blades as they were my first ever clubs handed down by my Grandad and I’m close to using them!! They are that good still!! Lucky not to ever had clubs stolen but all you can do is crack on!! I’m currently on eBay looking for a persimmon 😂

I loved watching you play with a persimmon driver. In high school I spent a year trying to find a set of left handed Wilson Staffs but had no luck. Hope to see you play a round with an entire set of old clubs one day. Love your channel.

Just fyi - when it comes to wood woods - there were two different types - Persimmon - the head was carved out of a solid block of wood. - Laminate woods are made in layers - almost like sheets of plywood glued on top of one another . They had a very different feel of the ball coming off the face . You are absolutely right about the insert in the face being screwed in - that is where hitting it on the screws comes from . You brought back so many wonderful memories . You did great with that driver - I think its extra weight was swinging you towards the end . Probably would be a good thing for you to practice with it once in a while you will get a greater feel for the clubhead throughout your swing .
