Developer and statistician here...yes ELO is based on match making within rank, but with things like chess, there isnt the added complexity of typing RPS style match ups inherent with pokemon. Is there an algorithm? Yes. Is it out to get you? No. Its there to balance gameplay. PokeAK is definately on the extreme side, but there is some truth in what he says....but yeh the better you are at the game, the better your ability to overcome balancing Edit: The only way to truely say there is no algo? Match you with an opponent first. Once matched, you then get like 1min to pick your teams.... But as long as you pick your team first and then get matched, you cant not have an algo
@jasonblack66888 ай бұрын
There’s no RPS in chess but whenever you study an opening it feels like your opponent never plays into it. That’s not an algorithm being against you it’s just random chance.

And thats the problem, you can never play with someone random, you always battle against someone that the algorithm has picked specifically for you, so either you get hardcountered, or your opponent gets hardcountered by you. And most of the time if you get hardcountered, there is not much you can do, if you switch, your opponent pull out another hardcounter, and you lost the match, no matter how good you are at pvp. The should be another method of matchmaking like other games, where you get to the lobby, and after that, you choose your team, your equipment, etc, in pokemon's case, you should enter to a lobby with your opponent, and in 10seconds you choose your team and then battle , that will delete completely the unfairness of the hardcounter mechanic that the algorithm choose for you.

Last season I made a team of poliwrath, Cresselia and bastiodon. Number 1 counter to the team was runerigus. I hadn’t seen one all season, first battle I queue into with this team I see one on the lead… the algorithm definitely hard counters you

The whole "in the zone" thing is very interesting. It definitely applies to many things in life. Sometimes it feels like everything is going your way and other times you're shadow balling noctowls as you eloquently put it. I'd be interested in reading research about it

Confidence plays a huge role but being able to control your nerves through relaxation techniques also helps maintain an in the moment thinking. Super interesting and complicated stuff but I love working with athletes to tap into that.

It’s more applicable to sports then something like gambling where people also think they’re on a ‘hot streak’ but it’s just the brain recognizing false patterns. The real result in sports however is self-confidence which can make you more relaxed and assured so you do better. For GBL it could definitely translate to decisiveness i.e. fast swaps and agressive play so you don’t give away many advantages

Even though PoGo employs a chess style rating you could still potentially go 30 or 40 games vs teams that are very weak to yours. Especially at the season start. This just doesn't happen. The algorithm works hard to try to get you to 50-50. If I don't see Cress for ages I'll risk swampert and as soon as I do Cress comes flying my way!

- First, I believe the Psychic is for Annihilape and maybe people running low on TMs - Second, this "being in the zone", I don't believe it. You may perceive it that way and maybe you have a good day where your brain is sharp and you do perform better. But either way you have to stay alert to not get overconfident. -Third, when you said you were confident that his switch timer wasn't up, would it not have been better to throw right away and not over farm to the potential cmp? Seems you could have dealt with Feraligatr with your remainin two pokemon reasonably well too.

A lot of players use “the algorithm” as copium to explain why they can’t climb such as PokeAK and his group of followers. It’s a blind 3 format, there is always going to be an element of RPS. If it was show 6, pick 3 no one would be complaining about an almighty algorithm. The amount of players I see not knowing matchups, not throwing on good timing, not building good teams and then blaming the algorithm for clear skill issues is astounding

I believe that the algorythm is very real. And if people don't believe that to be the case, I don't mind. However, I dislike when their defence is basically "you mad cuz bad bro". (Not that you Rais had that attitude here, but many are). I wouldn't claim to be a very high skilled player. But I do win the majority of my games when they are fairly neutral, sometimes even dominating. And those days I have had a very dominating 'neutral' play, I can always predict that I will not have fun games the next day. I could probably write whole paragraphs on the absolute BS that happens those days, like how I have only used my Umbreon as a starter litteraly 3 games, and the only time I faced a Machamp as a starter, where those 3 games. (I switched to Umbreon to test it out, and lo and behold). However, what cemented my deep belief that this system is "rigged". Is not my loses, is the fact you can clearly see it when it applies to your opponent. I can be hardcountered all day long, but when I see a player with rank 15 (who is fighting for rare candy), oh boy, this kid ain't gonna have it fun. Like it is almost hilarious, their teams aren't bad, most of the time they play like absolute beasts and catch everything and do everything perfect, meanwhile, I who know the game is rigged (this time in my favour) from the start, plays way laidbacked, and yet, there is nothing they can do. And those games, I usually do resign (at the end when it's 100% confirmed I will win). That is how deep my believes are, this is how mad I am about it. I refuse to partake in this absolute unfairness for others.

Dude, I think your opinion on algorithm / win rates is pretty biased due to your investment in the game. Your comparison to Chess is also a poorly made one. Magnus Carlsen (Chess) has rates of: Win 42.84%, Draw 42.35%, Lose 14.8%. Why aren't there many more draws in PvP if it's completely random matches (within skill levels) and is skill based as you claim? As of 2021, Novak Djokovic (Tennis) had a win rate was 83.08% and 67% in Grand Slams. Ronnie O'Sullivan (Snooker) has a win rate of 74.97% overall and 66% in finals. The cream ALWAYS rises to the top in single person, competitive play; yet even the best at GBL all hover around the same win rate. Why? It's not a product of fairness that even so called top players have around 50% win rate. That's not how it works in skill based, competitive play/sport and it's not how stats should work in 1 v 1 "sports" for almost every player that participates. Saying otherwise is pretty silly and possibly disingenuous IMO. GBL is very obviously manipulated to keep players grinding and spending time/money in the app IMO. Niantic don't care about fairness or sporting competition, they care about $$$.
@Nerivean8 ай бұрын
Damn bro you're lost. Completely blind and that's just sad. Reis is right in what he was trying to explain with the ELO system.
@mikebing12308 ай бұрын
Exactly. The best players in the world can barely get 55% win rates in GBL…. The algo works really well in balancing you to 50% regardless of your skill or teams. Don’t believe me? Go run a completely shit team with no coverage and watch how you’ll still go 12-13 wins a day.
@dbr22118 ай бұрын
The answer is obvious if you think about it for half a second: GBL is much more luck based than chess, or tennis, or snooker.
@Reis2TheOccasion8 ай бұрын
My counter point to you is I'd say the skill ceiling in Pokémon GO PvP is lower than that of Chess or Tennis. There is not as much of a gap between top players in this game compared to some sports, or chess.
@TheChadPhillips8 ай бұрын
@@Reis2TheOccasion I agree to a point. I think it's an extremely hard ceiling on skill, to the point where skill only factors in for such a small portion of matches, to the point where it sucks the fun and fairness out of it. I d think that's mostly due to a matchup algorithm that either provides hard matches, or easy matches; depending on where you are in "your cycle". It feels highly manipulated. When I still played, the amount of truly neutral matches was so ridiculously low. Why is PoGo GBL like this? It's literally the only example where almost every player has a similar win rate. That's not an accident. Another game (Hearthstone), it's best player tweeted he was able to go 67% winrate over 72 games in Legend grade. That would NEVER happen in GBL. Other examples abound...

@mikebing12308 ай бұрын
The game is 100% controlling your matchups. It’s making sure you stay around 50% win rate…. Doesn’t matter your team, your skill or your timing, the algo will find perfect teams to completely core break you…. The algo 100% exists and it has NOTHING to do with elo.
@whaletastic92008 ай бұрын
it probably exists but bruh focus on having fun and making good teams instead of complaining to a wall
