Hi guys, I came across this article today, which I thought summed up the puppy blues perfectly! www.telegraph.co.uk/christmas/0/getting-dog-supposed-cure-depression-instead-made-worse/ I know it would have been a comfort to read when I was going through it so I hope it is for some of you (also hope you're able to read it and don't need an account/need to be in the UK etc.!) I hate how little people talk about this. In every dog/puppy book there needs to be a chapter preparing people for puppy blues!!

Exactly what I'm feeling. I had no idea puppy blues was a thing until I got a puppy... it's so sad. I don't regret getting her at all, but I do miss my life prior to her at the moment. I just keep reminding myself that one day it will get better. And like you said... you've been through worse, and so have I.

it is SO relieving to be able to put some words to my feelings. I adopted a 1 year old doggie from the shelter about 6 days ago. She was surrendered by her owner and was only in the shelter for less than 24 hours. She is honestly such a great dog, besides a few training things that can be redirected and of course she is still getting adjusted. But right when I brought her in my house, instant regret came over me and I was crying for days and feeling anxious and panicked, shaking even. I’ve discovered I definitely do not do well with change and I am missing my old independent full of freedom lifestyle I had before. I already struggle with preexisting anxiety but did not expect this to affect me this much as I’ve been wanting a dog for about a year now. I definitely feel trapped like I cannot be like myself. It’s day 6 and I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel but it’s definitely still hard because I feel so alone and like no one understands. With that being said, thank you for sharing this video and making me feel not so alone! More people need to talk about this!!

Had my puppy just under a week and I broke down a couple of days ago I just cried because it was too much! But after someone came in and helped me with the puppy for s few hours I genuinely feel really good to have him! My puppy is awesome and so fun! My main problem was I wasn't giving myself any time I was with the puppy 24/7 and that's what I did wrong. Needed time to myself and since making a new routine it's gotten so much nicer

I experienced this, but I chose to rehome the puppy with a close friend who has a ranch since the puppy was a working dog. It's a great match, but I do miss the puppy. But, my cats and myself are much more at ease without a dog in the house.

Thank for posting this - it’s good to hear people have been through similar things I’m going through now. I got a springer spaniel almost 3 weeks ago after wanted a dog for ageeeees. Did loads of research and was feeling really confident and within a day I was in tears! I felt trapped, I felt guilty if I had to leave him alone, I went from so much free time to now free time and it was a complete culture shock! Almost 3 weeks in and I’m starting to get there I think but there isn’t nearly enough written or spoken about when it comes to puppy blues!

Hey everyone, I own a 9 mo English Setter and thought I'd share my story. For me the early months were solid, I felt mentally prepared and had a great puppy training schedule and everything. Judah (my doggy) was even great sleeping in his crate in the living room. It was really once we got the adolescent period that challenged me ... he seemed to purposely not want to listen and test me. He was becoming more defiant and showed less interest in me when outdoors. Couple that with a bad "fear period" where he didn't enjoy walks, but at 60+ lbs needed the exercise ... I started to get feelings of regret. But things do and are getting much better, day by day. I'm getting there by being rock solid with my emotions, not too many ups or downs, instead stick with routines and hold him accountable. Will Atherton, Beckman and McCann are great YT channels. I also prayed, almost every day for energy and patience. Patience was a big one for me, and my prayers were answered every time, literally within minutes. Also caffeine. I've never been a big caffeine person, but ever since I picked up Judah it is a necessity every morning. He's getting better, and I see light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there, I'm sure many of us dog loving owners go through this. Sleep on any major decision a couple of nights and keep going. Cheers from San Francisco, CA

Thanks for this video. So glad I found it. My wife and I got our pup a week ago and are definitely suffering from the blues. I've never been at this level of stress but its good to know we are not alone. We were on the brink of asking for re-homing assistance. The guilt is something we are working on and knowing it gets better helps. We have seen some major improvements over the days and are trying to focus on those positive moments, which are beyond awesome :)

Ahh I so appreciate you. I’m going through this with my 3.5 month havanese girl currently. I feel so guilty for resenting her for just being a baby, but it is hard not to miss the freedom I had before. And the NIPPING! Her mouth is always moving. She’s like a furry Pac-Man. Totally took me by surprise - I had dogs growing up but I must have not realized how grueling the puppy phase is when you’re the primary caretaker! People like you give me so much hope. Thank you for sharing your experience so honestly - I don’t see my many people my age with a havanese so it’s wonderfully encouraging to see another gal whose gone through it and come out alive with a sweet companion.

I got my beautiful havanese dog in 2005 , 17 years ago, just lost him in May and believe me , they are the most fierce protectors , loyal companions funny, happy, I can go on, they love you 100% and just want to please you. And YES the first months were hard, I had the puppy blues , he was a tough one to train, but I kept going and 11 months later , it was like unbelievable how he turned out, he did not want to be alone for long all his life he had separation anxiety for us , so I was lucky I worked at home for the 17 years I had him, so maybe thats why he was so attached to us and we took him everywhere, in our boat ect in the summers, he was a joy! Hopefully your puppy does not have the separation anxiety our fur baby did ,but I liked it cause I also could not leave him for long periods I had it too for him ! lol, he was my first doggie ever, and the ride with him was a joy!!! Will 💔 Miss him eternally !

I just brought home a puppy on Wednesday and I feel the exact same way. My puppy is a rescue and potty training, stopping him from nipping and barking etc is a lot. I've had thoughts about giving him back but feel horrible doing so without trying to work with him. I've been crying and my boyfriend has been awesome with his help. This video makes me feel better. Its weird cuz I've had 2 family dogs in the past and I've never felt like this with them

I never had a dog or even real pet growing up.. when I rescued my dog who was a puppy at the time, I cried the first day I got him. I felt like I didnt deserve this animal living with me for the rest of its life… like I wasnt a good enough person to have a dog that seemed to like me so much… I also felt like “omg what have I done” as he was barking at me for a while non stop when we first got home. Coke to find out, as I began to learn who he was, I realize his barking at me was really an expression of happiness and him just wanting me to cuddle him. I got so incredibly lucky with my shelter pup… he was a surrender, I never really had to potty train him, he doesn’t chew or eat things he shouldn’t. He’s incredibly easy. We even have a crate in my room that he just goes into freely. I let him do his thing and he’s just so well behaved. Sometimes he sleeps in his crate, sometimes with me but always so well behaved. I was very lucky. Everything I do with my little Nemo is a bonding experience for both of us.

im so glad im not alone! I currently live with my parents, unemployed and there is a war outside my window. To top all of this parents decided that a puppy is a great idea and the way to make my life better. Danny, the 2 months old fox terrier, has been my number one reason to cry almost every day for the past two weeks. Im feeling that it gets easier with a schedule and seeing some progress with training, but ..its so hard and exhausting and ruined my life a little

Evie is gorgeous! I had a beautiful little Pomeranian puppy that was such a wild child! We were at the park one day and my neighbor said, "She is co cute! Are you enjoying her?" and I was like, "No, I'm not." LOL I never thought I would survive puppyhood. But talking to him made me realize that she would only be a puppy for so long and I needed to enjoy that part of her life. She became such a good little sweetheart as she grew up and I loved her so much. She just passed away at almost 17 and I am so grateful for all the years we had together.

Some days are SO hard. And I felt so lost as well. But if it's any comfort, when I contacted the breeder, she also told me to push through and not give up yet so they must be used to people saying the same thing, which means so many people go through it! I'm sure everything will sort itself out and get easier, taking it day by day is the best approach. Good luck!

This was very encouraging!! We lost our senior dog at Christmas and I was desperate to get a new one because I was so heartbroken and missed having a dog so much! We got a 12 week goldendoodle rescue a couple of months later and it has been SO hard! The potty training, the constant worry and stress- and I have 4 little kids so I’ve adjusted to newborn babies but I wasn’t expecting that I should literally consider it the same as a newborn! Some of my kids took longer to bond with so now I see it’s the same with our puppy, who is FINALLY starting to get potty training and we are truly starting to bond. But it’s still such a life altering decision to get a puppy (way more than an adult dog) but you give me hope it’ll be worth it in the end! Thank you!

I am at week 3.5 of adopting a 2.5 year old puppy and had been away for 1 week for a preplanned trip. So 2.5 weeks in and I am unbelievable depressed, and anxious and literally for no reason, the dog is pretty well behaved besides always wanting attention and slight attitude problem. I guess maybe i have some expectations and comparisons to other dogs ive been around that im also holding onto. Which we plan to train out of him. But like I have not had an appetite i don't feel comfortable in my home, I am not sleeping and I have a pit in my stomach all day every day. And so i guess this is more over my new life change and less over the dog but i have literally told my partner i don't want the dog multiple times and Im pretty sure i just need to adjust, they say there is no time frame on the puppy blues but It is taking forever to go away. I feel bad for my partner who is in love with the dog and this new life and im a miserable person right now and i pretty much ignore him .I feel like I can breath after watching this video and seeing these comments.

My little Eddie is heading towards 5 months old. Had him nearly 3 months. It's getting better and better as he gets more disciplined. He's SO cute it hurts my chest. I will never forget lying on the sofa on day 2, sobbing and saying "I can't do this, I've let everybody down. Why did I get a puppy? I'm so stupid! I've ruined everything" while this innocent little puppy lays with his on my leg wondering why the big dumb ape that took him away from mum is falling to pieces. November and december fucking SUCKED. January, not so bad! Now it's february and the little fellar is asleep in his crate, being a very good boy. This video helped me loads though. Especially the bit where you talk about just running around the garden with the pup and trying to enjoy it. I tried that myself. Totally faked being happy with the dog but it did work a little bit. Then one day I just laid on the floor and let him just go wild, licking, jumping on my head and just being a little nutter. I now do this regularly because it was the first time that I laughed (and I properly laughed) since I got him. I think the actual blues lasted until January 7th and the following weekend because I had to drive from Manc to Boro with the dog to attend my Grandma's funeral and I was dreading it. What if he chews the seat? What if he goes mental and makes me crash? After I got back to my house, that was it. The anxiety was gone, I had nothing to dread anymore, and if we can make that trip, there's not a single reason I can't do all the things I like to do, just with a puppy there as a consideration.

Omgosh I didn’t even know puppy blues was a thing but I’m sitting here listening to you talk about your experience and I could relate to all these feelings. I almost wanted to cry again! I’ve had my German Shepard for 4 weeks now. The first week I cried so many times and I felt like I was failing her and myself. She is not my first dog but honestly every dog is different and since I had done it before I thought I had it all figured out! I was wrong!!! the first week I was sleep so deprived, training was not going well and crate training was hell!! Lol but for anyone reading this i promise it will get better! I promise. My puppy is still handful not going to lie and she’s now 3 months old but it’s NOTHING like week 1 or 2 and every week it gets a little better. I am just very consistent with her schedule, I tire her a lot and I do my best to not get lazy with her training. Every day I take about 15-20 mins to teach her new commands and the ones she already has learned. I found that has been key! trust me you will see how each week things progress for the better. Best of luck to all the fur moms and dads out there struggling with their new puppy and don’t lose hope things will get better!!

Hi Sophie, I am glad to see your video even if its been 10 months now. I love dogs so much back then when I was 10yrs old I had 3 dogs which basically I take care of and I don’t remember how I did that but unfortunately those 3 dogs I had when I was young passed I way last year. However, I love dogs very much that I started to check which breed will be suitable for me which I did get a Labrador retriever and I was shocked by the responsibility of having a puppy which I am adult now and I experienced what you are going through which I tried my best but keep my new puppy but my mind and body gave out so I find a nee home for my puppy which I think that I am failure that time. However, I tried again to get a puppy again which basically I did and now I am ready and its going strong, my puppy is now 12weeks which she now potty trained but not perfectly she have accidents inside but once I give the command go potty she will relieve herself which I taught her for about 2 days she is very smart dog and very cheerful and her breed is toy poodle.

I’m having this exact feeling. But your dog sounds quite sweet from the beginning. My dog is 70% sweet 30% growling and biting and scratching… I did so much research and I’m meeting all of his core needs he just seems angry at me so often. We’ve had him for over three weeks now.

Oh she might look sweet but she was definitely a terror for a good few months haha. She was a big biter up until she was about 6 months. I think sometimes their playing can be confused for them being angry - they often growl and bite when playing with other dogs and Evie sometimes growls when she gets very excited when playing with me. And she still mouths me when she gets excited too!

I try to speak very openly about how difficult my puppy can be and how I have cried while taking her out at night. But everyone we meet obviously thinks she is adorable (she is!!) and calm and gentle (she... mostly, is. Just not at night). I felt bad taking her from her mum and siblings. But she slept on my chest on a matress on the ground and was adorable the first few nights. Now she is confidently jumping and barking at me to give her food 😆😅

I got a puppy 2 weeks ago and I'm already exhausted from cleaning up runny poop and pee from one end to the other. I keep him created most of the time now and take him out just to hold him and let him play for a bit. He's kept me up every night. I'm so over it. Thought of rehoming him three times now....😳 UGH

literally going through this right now it's only day 2 and she's a gorgeous 12 week old golden retriever puppy but i can't sleep because i'm constantly so worried about her, she's shown so much progress already but my anxiety and depression are not letting me rest but i don't want to fail her and myself. thank you so much for this i thought i was a terrible person for even considering re homing her. hopefully this passes because i remember when i got my 8 week old kitten i was 13 i remember i was sobbing first couple of days even though taking care of a kitten is nowhere near as hard as taking care of a puppy but now 5 years later i love her more than anything in the world and i feel like she made me understand cats way more and i'm positive my puppy will make me feel the same. UPDATE 16 WEEKS: she turned 16 weeks this week and let me tell you, IT DOES GET BETTER!! reading this comment now makes me so proud of her and myself, so if you're going through the same feeling i was going through 5 weeks ago just know, it does get better. If you told me that we will have days with no accidents inside I would've said you're lying but here i am! We have days with 0 accidents, days with 1-2, and days with 3 but compared to the 12+ accidents I had to clean up the first week, i'm so proud of her. I used to carry her to go potty outside every single time, and now she knows (well kind of she loves biting it) to walk on a leash! Overall, everytime i compare her to her 5 weeks ago i just get really emotional because she's made so much progress. Trust me, it does get better just be consistent with training and be patient don't get mad or frustrated at your puppy for doing normal puppy behavior and be proud of the small progress they make. BE PATIENT that's my only advice and take it day by day there are so many things she does now that i couldn't imagine she would be able to do 5 weeks ago, love YOUR puppy and stop comparing them to other puppies, and good luck. (btw r/puppy101 has been a lifesaver start going on it)

You are practically mirroring my experience! I'm so sorry you're feeling like this but I promise it will get better - your kitten is proof of that! I think the problem is we actually care so much for them that we constantly overanalyse what we're doing and work ourselves up to think we're not doing enough. But she sounds like she's doing so well because of you! I have every faith you'll go on to have the best relationship with your puppy, just give yourself some time, they're a huge adjustment!

Sounds like having a kid..post partum depression.

All mothers don’t have overwhelming anxiety with newborn infant. If there are underlying issues perhaps. Postpartum depression is something else altogether. I have treated women for that , very serious. Sounds to me you perhaps had very little support with your puppy except for your own research. Where was your mother if you live together now? Maby just not type to be involved. Sounds not in couple relationship to share your be responsibility with but your vet and his calmness and solid personality and there to support you enough to take the edge off and allow yourself to accept. I had s career in medicine so I was very accomplished with high anxiety profile situations daily surrounding me. I have raised a marvelous pack of Standard Poodles and three of the five died this past year with conditions related to very old age. Mother 16, father 15, one son I kept from their one litter died two months ago at age 13. I still have one male son age 13 and I adore him but realize he is quit elderly . So every moment is precious to both of us. I came across these Havanese and instantly fell in love with them from videos here in US from Have a Hug breeder up North in Minnesota or Michigan and Heavenly Havanese videos also from up north. I live in Missouri. Those adorable little puppies caused me to laugh enthusiastically within the first few seconds. I had not been laughing for quit some time due to grief of loosing my Poodles and having battled cancer . Those videos helped heal me and now I have found a breeder 45 minutes from my home called Havanese Haven! I spoke to them yesterday and plan a day trip down within the next week or two. I’m thrilled and know I will fall in love with everyone I see! I’m older now and the dog could outlive me but one never knows about that situation . Anyway others in puppy’s life and if I go first then I just go first but one mustn’t stop living orvenjoying life because of death . I’m cancer free now , or so I’m told , but I certainly feel I have a joi de livre I didn’t have before. And I want to spend some of that time with a Havanese since I have been entertained and studying them for a year now. I’m sorry for you obvious painful loss of your father and I lost my mother as a young 23 year old budding woman. I’m so happy for you that you are onnthis marvelous journey and growth with your beautiful blue eyed Eva. I plan to follow your videos , you are a quit delightful young English woman! M
