Get a twic id Dave, you'll save so much time and frustration at ports. And where you see those containers going in is where you'd go if you had twic. And yes the escort stays with the trucks the entirety of the load/unload
@paulshields2220 Жыл бұрын
TWIC also gets you into pre check lines for TSA at airports and gives you a background discount if you decide to get a hazmat endorsement. A few years ago the government combined all 3 federal background checks. I’ve used my TWIC card at DFW for TSA pre check. And when I was updating my license the office told me about the cost reduction because I asked about testing requirements and fees.
@jektv_123 Жыл бұрын
I thought the twic card is cheaper if you already have your hazmat

It's not a coincidence if westrock and that port are right next to each other and that you guys were unloading paper rolls. I work at a printing shop and the biggest challenge is storage space. So most likely these loads are for westrock, but they have them unloaded and transfered into containers for storage. Then, when they need the paper load, they probably send a yard dog with the container over to westrock.
@RidingWithDave Жыл бұрын
Yep that’s another reason I wanted to try westrock because it just made sense with the load lol.
@JohnHallgren Жыл бұрын
@@RidingWithDave another KZbin driver RebelDan had a bad experience with that same port just recently. He was trying to locate a load to pick up. He was stuck there overnight, I believe, and they eventually found that the load hadn’t cleared customs so it was cancelled.

It's always a fun time when you have to go into a port. The container movers your seeing moving the containers, is a container handler. It's basically a glorified forklift model to too lift containers

The people going around you have a twic card. The only thing a twic card is for, in my case anyway, is to be able to drive around the ports without an escort. If you know where your going you just go. If not then you get an escort either way

They should have let that Migway truck stay in line but when he got up to the place to unload tell him "we weren't expecting your load, you must not have checked in with the escort, you have to go back to the place where you wait for the escort truck". Basically let him wait in line then force him to go back and do it again since he tried to jump in the line. That's how you get people to follow the procedures, what they did just rewarded and reinforced his bad behavior
@joschaugustenborgnielsen236610 ай бұрын
My teacher once worked for a company (can't remeber the name, it was in Denmark) that was known for having long wait times for truckers. It came down to them not having set times for trucks showing and the loads in the trucks were often not placed in order of unload (multiple dropoffs for different companies in them). One time he turned away a truck who had turned up in their timeslot, however the load was not packed in order, so he told him to drive off and get it fixed before coming back. When he did come back he got turned away, because it was more than an hour past his timeslot. The trucker was pissed because he had to wait for the next day, but there was not any problems in the future and the truckers liked the place afterwards. In Denmark if you move the pallets which are not part of your order and you damage them, you will be responisble for replacing it. The truck were unloaded from the rear, so no way to skip them.

Im @15:00 into the clip; I might edit or delete this comment. Im not yet a trucker but am taking steps towards towards getting my CDL-A. Not sure if i want to work the ports or not, but...From my understanding, if you do NOT have a TWIC-card, you need an escort. But if you DO have a TWIC-card, you dont need an escort. Those truckers hauling @$$ past you (while you wait for the escort) likely have a TWIC-card. Again from my understanding, this doesnt matter if there are vessels in-port or not @21:00 - The scanner is scanning for things like guns, bombs, and hidden-passengers

I pull loads in and out of Memphis railyards. We just call them “lifts”. And the portals are for taking images of truck, chassis, and container. To make sure the container and chassis numbers are right and also for damages and stuff. Most of the places you just pull up to the computer once you get past the portal and type in your information and they tell you where to go. I can’t say for the ports but rail yards in Memphis aren’t difficult. But I don’t have to have a TWIC or anything in Memphis.
@joshjohnsey3267 Жыл бұрын
And also, you have pins on the chassis you just pop them and the lift will drive up and take it off or put it on. Not much to it. Pretty easy

Did a lot of port work for a summer. You will find these A holes skipping lines and then driving off only to find them sitting in a rest stop or a fuel station. I finally numbed up to it because just like in your situation they just shrug it off and tell you sorry. Ports are something else. Small ports usually will tell that guy to eff off though if they like you. Always fun watching them get kicked to the back of the line (I'm talking extremely small ports) Great video. You did great!

Yea ports are the most confusing awkward poorly designed places u can deliver to. I used to go run the ports daily it requires precision, higher that you're used to, alot of driving around trying to find or remember where to go to drop a container, waiting for hrs if the crane operator is on a break or has multiple others to pull for or if u cant fit into your slot or u have to wait till someone moves to get to the lane your container is in. In Nj got 1 automated, 1 that requires a ton of precision & perfect driving, 1 that requires getting a ticket for a slot to park then waiting for them to bring it to u unless they forget u...., 1 that u just haveto know where to drop the container by the company that owns them. I hated it.

Since it's a port it involves US Customs security checks. The first thing the trucks are going thru is an advanced x ray machine and takes pictures of what's inside, the truck number, and trailer number. Behind that is a security checkpoint. If the xray machine notices something suspicious or it detects a controlled substance it flags it and the truck is pulled thru a second security check thru another xray machine that customs monitors if it's flagged again they check what's on your manifest and may ask you to open the trailer but most times they just have a drug dog sniff for contraband.
