Interesting and informative and entertaining. Special thanks to veteran soldiers/civilians sharing personal information/combat experiences. Making this documentary more authentic and possible. Special shout out to 🚑 medical personnel medics/stretcher bearers 😇 risking life and limb tending to the wounded soldiers. An army that's slowly retreating (Germany) unfortunately can't always transport the wounded. To hospitals out of harms way. 😭😭 The misfortunes of war. Out of curiosity did the Russian wounded soldiers. Receive 1/2 way decent medical 🚑 treatment???

Spain was VERY friendly to the Third Reich. But Franko was smart enough to realize that Spain had nothing to gain from actually joining the war. To bad Mussolini got sucked in.

Spain offered. But Franco was smart enough to claim they needed excessive resources and equipment because of losses from their civil war. He knew Germany likely couldn't afford what he requested. And if they did it was because the war was near the end and Germany was going to be victorious, so he could jump in and claim some of the spoils. I've seen different numbers, but a fair number of Spaniards did join the German foreign corps.
@lamwen03

@@christopherconard2831I hadn't known that. I understand that Mussolini signed on after the early, easy victories. But before Poland. And a lot of men joined Germany to fight International Socialism, not to support Nazi policies or societal goals.

these pieces are badly named and numbered. it says this is "part 3", but where are the other two, what are they named, and are they numbered--as they should. when things are posted in many parts, then the name should be identical to them all, except the addition of "part 1, part 2, part 3......" else there is no way of finding them, unless a person listens to the entire collection (unlikely) and try to put the pieces together. NOT DONE WELL naming and numbering these.

Some of the incidents are scarcely believable. Even his horse knows combat manoeuvres!!! Again, no atrocities by his men, but beastly Soviets running over injured Germans with their tanks. It's exciting listening, but heavy pinches of salt needed. It's interesting to hear Manstein's view, whixh at this time had not yet been discrefited and proved as false. He was never able to accept that he was eventually out thought and outfought by Soviet Marshals and Red Army soldiers.

The part about the JU52 landing on soft ground to collect wounded and the tires sinking 10 cm's in the mud and the pilot knowing it's going to be very critical whether we can lift out of the field and the attitude of the wounded thinking they have a plane flying them out, the plane lifting and clumps of clay falling off the plane as it slowly lumbers into the sky barely making it above the trees, this isn't made up its real from a German perspective, I would say it's 90% accurate, As far as no atrocity's the ones that committed atrocity are no longer carrying out there systematic expansion of German territory but they are in defense of there own German soil the ambition target has changed.

There are extant writings from Hitler who said he admired Franco and Spain, over Mussolini and the Italians. The reason given was Spain's fears under Muslim rule, ending in 1492, which he thought gave a stronger more ruthless character to the Spanish, versus the Italians who were for the last 1900 years Catholic. A religion he despised (shown by the number of Catholic priests, brothers and sisters killed in Concentration camps. In total these numbered about 20,000). The narrator mentioned the Catholic chaplain which Hitler He in rock at al. had to allow to keep the enlisted soldiers happy. It should be noted that the

John Toland, the historian, was once asked on a radio show to name the person that he thought was most responsible for the Allies winning WWII. His response was quite surprising to me and the interviewer. It was Franco. He asked him to explain. Hitler had helped Franco get into power and as payback he asked Franco to let his forces to pass through Spain and attack Gibraltar. If Hitler controlled Gibraltar there is no Africa Campaign. Egypt is lost, the Suez Canal is useless to the British and shipping from the Far East has to to around the Horn of Africa. Franco told Hitler that he would be happy to help, but that the railway gauges were different between France and Spain and would take some time to convert. Long story short he delayed Hitler until Gibraltar became a moot point. Why, asked the interviewer? Toland said he wasn't sure but suspected that it might have something to do with one of Franco's grandparents having been jewish!

Funny that I was thinking the same thing the last commenter brought up. The diaries sound too polished, well written and wordy for a soldier at times under bombardment and at other times describing his fellow bayonets. Its taken me listening to many of these videos to start to doubt this is an authentic day to day diary of a soldier on the Eastern Front. Am I wrong? I hope so.

maybe im wrong but i assumed it was a book written after the war using his personal diary for references not word for word.... *edit* my grandfathers war diary's where actually very well written like a newspaper, it is like stepping back in time reading what he sent home. he was in the navy and his description of everything was really well done for just a diary or letters home.

Good grief - what?! You think the guy wrote this while under fire in combat or something?? A diary and imperfect memory forms the basis of it, with no doubt a lot of dramatic license employed when the book was written years later, along with proofreaders and a critical editor. None of these types of writing are ever spontaneous.
