The instructors at my MSF course were joking with the girls who dropped their bikes, giving them trophy's of broken parts that came off the bike when they dropped it. But they all passed. You need to have people around you who just want you to succeed.

I feel you. I took mine at the Harley Davidson place. When we did the hands on it was a struggle. It felt they would go so fast and pushing us. I was so frustrated. They bike they had me use was just too big. Dropped it like 3 times. At that point if was not safe for me to continue. I cried all the way home that day. I passed the written test so all I need was the hands on. They sent me to another Harley Davidson place and I rode a Eliminated which way better and smaller. I finished the rest of the cource and riding test but was 3 points too much to pass. Re-did the driving test at the mfs headquarters but dropped it during the test. Did it once again but this time 1 on 1 with the trainer and passed with 0 points! If you put your mind to it anything can happen. Got my license and my first bike both in December. Good on you for knowing what you want and continuing to try!!! Getting back on the bike is the hardest part, but better to fail time and time again in class than out there in the real world. A good instructor that wants you to pass won't treat you like that. I don't like Harleys or their dealerships and heard their classes are like boot camps. Mine was nothing like that. I try not to even converse with Harley riders at stop lights, because my experience with them is complete arrogance (Kawasaki here). I don't know if it's their culture or what, and I certainly don't mean all of them. When I get hate comments for this, it will prove my point.

OMG, So sad! Failed yesterday! I love the Course overall as to learning the basics. As to shoving in so much info that you are expected to nail all that in two short days and pass a test? Holy cow! I walked away disappointed in myself. Anxiety, nervous, all played into a bad day. DAY ONE was near perfect! Which, never riding a bike more than maybe a couple hours years ago on a little motor dirt bike, made me happy. The pressure of starting day 2 out on figure eights and watching one young guy dump pretty hard? It was all down hill. Congrats! Being 51, I start to feel age is the issue.

I'm doing it my way and really enjoying it. You can do this 👊

I'm 64 and agree with you. For me it wasn't the exercises themselves, but trying to figure out which way to go on the course. I've always have direction issues (nothing GPS can't handle), but if I'm following an example, I'm fine. Given multiple direction at once can be confusing to me. I can play Chopin's Military Polonaise in A Maj from memory, but to get from A to B, then C to D, not so much. We all have our talents. @@lilynorthover8378

I have a 2022 Rebel 1100 manual and that’s how I found Burch’s channel in 2022. After a long absence from his channel, I saw your new 500 (and the yellow tank ❤) and the road trip, then this video showed up in my rec list. I realize this was last year, but congrats on your license and riding! Instructors make or break us. I’ve taken the class 3x, 1st to get licensed (at age 52 woo hooo!) and 2nd as a seat filler when they only had 1 person that weekend. I became good friends with both instructors and 1 became my bestie. Participants didn’t know we were doing the road skills test either. It was so fun and rewarding. 3rd time was at the Harley dealership in Spring, TX. I was an advanced rider but I took the course with my daughter for a daughter/mother weekend. I traveled 600 miles to be there. They promised we would be together through the course. It was horrible and your boot camp description pretty much sums it up. No breaks, heavy sighs/eye rolling /shaming when asking for a bathroom break, and they separated us with our answers to 1 question: who here is interested in buying a Harley. I said no because I already had bikes. My daughter said yes. Those who said yes got nice bikes. Those who said no got trashy bikes that were falling apart. My bike’s shifter was broken and even though there was an unused better condition Rebel, they wouldn’t let me use it. Both groups were equally yelled at and I walked out mid-day on day 2. Others left, too. Nobody got a refund. Half didn’t pass. And you can probably guess that my daughter never rode again. She’s okay with it although I felt that she really wanted to. The course was a gift to her from her boyfriend. I’m glad you went back and more so that you got Miss V who clearly wants riders to succeed. Subscribed.

The difference is a good school wants to show you how easy and fun it is so you want to do it. At a bad school, the instructors want you to think it's difficult, almost "see how good I am because I can do it". Sounds like you found a good school the second time. Also, and it shouldn't be this way, some male instructors like to play the "Big Man" with younger female riders. My wife had the same when she took her first course here in the UK, we found her a different course and she nailed her test mas they had more respect for the students. Glad you got sorted and hope you enjoy your ongoing motorcycle journey :)

Didn't tell us it was starting however I notice he had a clipboard in his had so I caught on real quick. @@KomotoVlogsTry accelerating in a straight line then breaking hard. Build up your speed and get to feel how much more stable the bike feels under power and when breaking don't surprise your tyres, once you feel the tyres starting to grip and settle increase the pressure smoothly and firmly. When you master stability and no longer pootle about and prevent the wobbly feeling you'll be much more confident in your and the bikes ability. If you ride around constantly thinking about falling off you can never enjoy motorcycling for what it is, I don't mean you have to ride balls out with your hair on fire, but it needs to become second nature to you and confidence is the key, I know you'll get there, relax and enjoy.

It's really interesting to hear how similar in some ways and different in others the US training is compared to the UK and Europe. In the UK (and Europe) we split into into four stages: Stage 1 - Compulsory Basic Training (CBT): A days basic training which starts in a parking lot and then progresses to a couple of hours on the road when ready. Typically this will be with three or four trainees to an instructor. A CBT cerificate only lasts two years and you have to either pass your full licence or retake the CBT to ride beyond that. After you pass your CBT you can only ride a motorcycle or scooter up to a maximum of 125cc. With only a CBT you also have to put Learner plates (red and white L plates) in the front and back of your bike. Stage 2 - Theory test. This can be taken before or after the CBT. It is also split into two parts where there is an actual theory test with 50 questions and also a reaction test using a computer simulation where you have to react to multiple scenarios correctly and quickly enough to detect the hazard. Stage 3 - Module 1 ("Mod 1"). This sounds a little like part of your MSF where we learn manoeuvres around an enclosed training area (handling the bike, weaving through cones, figures of eight, acceleration, emergency braking, u-turns, etc). We are then tested by a different qualified examiner at a later date (our trainers don't examine us). Stage 4 - Module 2 ("Mod 2"). We then train on real world riding on the road for a couple of days, followed by a professional examiner testing us. The test involves about an hour of riding with the examiner following you and marking you on minor and major faults. Only after Stage 4 can we ride a more powerful bike than a 125cc. But depending on your age you may then be able to ride an unrestricted bike or only be able to ride a bike with 47bhp. There's a complex set of rules sometimes needing a second test to get access to an unrestricted power bike if you are young.

I actually love the way the UK etc. has their riding school set up, I genuinely think it’s the correct way to do it. It would prevent a lot more 17/18 year olds getting on liter bikes and ruining their lives. I was determined from the get go to learn slowly and properly and share with the internet every step of the way so that I could “influence” in a safe and informative matter. Riding motorcycles is dangerous and you HAVE to learn properly. Everyone can go straight and fast but what happens when that car pulls out in front of you? Or there’s an object in the road? Yknow?

Congratulations on trying again and getting it done. When I live in Canada, Manitoba has now made it a prerequisite to getting your beginner's license that you must first pass a provincial motorcycle safety course. I did have to do my knowledge (written test at a driver licensing place) before you are allowed to participate in the course. At the end of three days they gave us all a fairly simple test. a short curved path that we had to get up to speed in second gear by a certain point, do a quick stop at the first end, a u turn, and then get back to the start in under 20 seconds (it could be less than that all I know is I passed. But then we have a graduated licensing program so I had to wait nine months before I can do my final road test under a driving tester. I haven't done that yet because I haven't had enough practice time. Our instructors were wonderful. very nice and empathetic knowing we are all just learning. They would stop you to give you some feed back, it was great. Relaxed and fun. have a Rebel 500 and I am loving it.

My experience was a lot like how you described your positive experience and nothing like how you described your Harley course experience. Our instructors were SOO experienced and SOO good. I think your best bet is probably to check reviews and talk to people who have taken the course you’re looking at. Also keep in mind that the same course may have different instructors at different times. The Harley course sure did and I took the class when it was being taught by my preferred instructor. Probably a huge part of why it was such a positive experience.

I have issues with the Harley instructors method. Most important thing about riding is to get comfortable, build confidence and to enjoy the ride while being safe and alert. Them pushing you to do something you’re not comfortable doing is a hazard. Good thing you learnt in a more relaxing and comfortable environment. I had the same problem on my first day, I was very anxious and drop my bike twice( along with myself). The MSF instructor was calm and cool and help me relax. I rode much better the next day and pass the test. I’m hoping to get a bike soon and return for the intermediate classes with them.

This video helped a lot to keep looking at other places near me. I found one and I plan to soon schedule my class thank you (:

man Harley is not the place to do MSF course. I feel for ya for sure. I did my MSF course at Harley and they had us TOASTING in the sun in June. I thought they were giving us enough water breaks but I was dead wrong. When I got home that night I had some severe heat exhaustion symptoms. Shivering, shaking, body aches from hell. One girl almost had a emergency cardiac event cause she got so hot. Congrats on the course completion! Do an advanced course next! it's so fun and much less stress than the initial MSF course!

Congrats on getting your license, I’m very happy for you. 🎉 Kind off a weird process in the states for getting your motorcycle license. Over here its, do the written test and pass. Then sign up for a road course. 20hours off driving. 2 hours on a closed course learning to start and stop and turn and then 18hours on the road in traffic with a instructor behind you in a car telling you where to go trough an earpiece. And then the test is like 10min closed course and 45min in traffic again. Have fun riding!

Congratulations! I feel like I had it easier than you. I started riding at 7 (I'm 63 now) on a dirt track in the middle of nowhere. I never took a class and by the time I got my license (at 21), I'd already been racing on two wheels for about 5 years. Loved your enthusiasm and found it inspiring. Motorcycles shouldn't be stressful or intimidating and it seems too many courses, especially Harley courses, go out of their way to make them that way. I'm glad this journey had a happy ending but this is the beginning of an even grander journey. Biking is freedom. You get to experience the sunshine, the smells, the flowers, the scenery, and yes, the rain, bugs, and heat, or in my case, the cold. I hate the cold. Cheers!!!

I love this comment!! Thank you! I can’t wait to experience all the things. P.s I always wished I had grown up on two wheels, mighta made this whole ordeal a bit easier lol!

I was fortunate that a close family friend was a serious bike fan and had several. He convinced my mom it'd be perfectly safe though she cringed every time I got on one. He simply told me what to do and let me go. Since mortality is just a vague concept at 7 I quickly learned cornering fast was a serious adrenalin rush and I've been addicted ever since, Motorcycling is like breathing. 🙂

Jeezus, can't believe they issued you a permit. I passed it the 1st time, and I'm 64 years old. Had my learners permit so I could ride my Harley Davidson home from the private party seller 50 miles away. Those multiple choice tests are too damn easy, no wonder there's so many idiots driving on our roads.

its a great feeling passing. enjoy your new freedom of riding. here in the UK getting a motorcycle license, you need to pass - a theory test, a one day compulsory test (which is similar to what you have jus done ) then module one on a test circuit and finally module two out on the road. then it all depends on age as to what you can ride. we have 3 classes of license depending on your age. took me a year to do mine as test centre was booked up a lot.

I just finished the HD New Rider Course. I had two great instructors, lots of personal coaching, no yelling, frequent breaks... Sorry you didn't have the same high-quality training I got. Mine was at the HD dealership in Madison, Alabama. We used their training bikes (mid-sized sport bikes.)

I like your attitude so much that I’m sending this video to my daughter. I’ve been riding for decades and my 32 year old daughter wants to learn! After all she grew up being around motorcycles because of her dad. I used to think that I would teach her how to ride but instead we’re gonna take a class together. I don’t want to teach her the bad habits that I’ve learned over the decades. I want to take her to an instructor like yours so she can learn good habits from the beginning!! By the way I’m always learning and pushing myself to learn from every ride. I do however think she would benefit from a formal class that I never had when I was her age!!

I have heard a lot of bad things about the Harley MSF course. Some people say they're great, but way too many people seem to not at all care for how they do things. Too much damn pressure and stress, which doesn't benefit anyone, least of all a nervous new rider. And most people who are taking the MSF course are just that - nervous and new to riding. The MSF course my wife and I took (not a Harley one) was much more like you describe your second course: relaxed and friendly and the instructors were super patient and helpful for the riders who needed a little bit more coaching and support, like my wife. I think there were 10 people in our class and three of us already had motorcycle licenses and plenty of riding experience so the two instructors had plenty of time to assist the seven who were new to riding. At the end of the two day course everyone had passed the course! Great experience.
@KomotoVlogs Жыл бұрын
I’m so glad to hear you both went with the MSF course! I had only heard high praises of the Harley course so I thought it would be okay but my goodness those instructors did not care. Ms V seemed to care a lot more about safety than passing and that’s what counts at the end of the day! Y’all ride safe out there and thank you for the support!🤘🏻

i have to agree, if your paying for classes it should feel good and support. mine was the same, tough but respectful.
