Will I still be able to catch up? A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback. Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use? A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length. The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training. Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style? A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all. The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. From my general understanding is that the main problem with 2-bladed weapons is that in almost all scenarios reach is preferable ability to strike with both ends. Basically 2-bladed weapons give you the inconvenience of polearm while only being slightly superior to regular swords. Additionally it wasn't uncommon for polearms to have spike at the end. While it was mainly used to plant the polearm firmly to the ground, you could still to back end strikes with it. In almost all applications very tiny blade at the end would basically do the same trick as longer blade, while giving more handle for better leverage (and allowing longer reach at the other end)
@gokbay305720 күн бұрын
Yeah, double bladed swords like that are pretty much "polearms but worse" or at least they can't do anything that polearms won't be able to do better.
@CHNO-kk4rl19 күн бұрын
I imagine if anyone were to use it as a somewhat less bs way than jedi and other media representation you could make one of the sheathes lockable so that its a (somewhat short but still) polearm until you unsheathe the other blade in some anime protagonist moment. Now i kinda want to see it applied in a game like monster hunter (because they already have a lot of morphing weapons) or a soulslike.

It's always super interesting to see how easily Seki sensei adapts real techniques from his style to any weapon he is given. One thing would be being creative and come up with things on the spot which is amaizing enough but he understands Asayama Ichiden ryu so deeply that every weapon he is handed might aswell always been a staple in the style. A true master of his craft, no wonder he is the head master of the style.

The second technique in the first 12 seconds is also used in Irish stick fighting when the stick is gripped in a two thirds grip, meaning two thirds (the business end) is above your hand and the last one third is below your hand. The lower is used to "block" driving the heavier knob end into the attacker.
@BACK-FROM-THE-BRINK24 күн бұрын
I'm irish and perhaps the first time iv heard of this. Seems little bit similar to the Philippines stick fighting I tried a long time ago. But they used two short sticks and put speed into it. Us irish are stubborn and love a scrap so may have been a cuase for concern if the 2 ever met. Hope to find a group around cork. Thank you for bringing to my attention. 👍

double blades like this are weapons where I'm always on the line of how practical would they actually be? I've seen stuff breaking them down claiming they'd be trash. others that say they'd be useful but hard to use. and from my own toying around with stuff like double blade lightsabers my thoughts come on the line of it being hard to use, but being really good at defensive due to being able to go for a target while blocking at the same time, potentially even going for the legs and or head depending on where your opponent choses to block. So it's really cool to see someone with this level of sword training and knowledge break down and show how it could be used and that it could be a pretty viable weapon.

I'm really curious what he'd do with the bagua weapon deerhorn knives. As a proponent of their use, I wonder how he would interpret their strengths and weaknesses. The fact that every part of the weapon except the part you hold has an edge and you use them in pairs would be very interesting.

shadaversity did something similar in a vid where they duct taped 2 foam swords together to try sparring, single edged actually seemed to make it easier to use than that version, since you dont have to grip a short handle, and simply half sword with your hand on one side of the blade. and basically concluded that you have a big advantage against a normal sword, but it struggled against pole weapons. who really knows if it might be better than an average pole arm at dueling though, since they are impractical to make and carry around, so no1 really trained a lot with it. the only historical double edged blade I can think of was the guandao, which was kind of like a naginata that can also hook on one side, and often had a spear end on the other. I personally think it'd work better with a nagimaki blade. real historical reason you probably didnt see it is not that its a really bad weapon, its just impractical to make and carry as a side arm or self defense weapon, like a normal katana. it struggles against a long pole weapon like a naginata or yari, which also was better as a formation weapon. much easier to just equip yourself with a nodachi, bow or pole weapon while having a katana and or wakizashi, tanto on your waste as a side arm.

In the Pathfinder tabletop roleplaying game there's a weapon called a "double walking stick katana" that's described as being a staff that has two wakizashi blades concealed within on either end, and while sheathed you can use it to strike like a staff for blunt damage, but when unsheathed, you can slash with the blades. However, the description makes it unclear if the weapon is meant to be similar to this weapon with the blades being attached in the middle, or if they're meant to be two separate and independent wakizashi blades that draw out of a central sheath.
@ROMANTIKILLER224 күн бұрын
I think that an important element is that the design of this (toy) weapon had not only one blade shorter than the other, but also both blades facing the same side. I supposed that if it had been one of those fantasy double-bladed weapons with blades facing opposite directions, not even Seki Sensei with his skills and knowledge could have made much out of it given the risk to cut yourself with that inherently bad design.

I once saw a stage act using this kind of blade. But they didn't draw the second blade right away. Instead the sword acted like an extended hilt and fought like a staff or even mini naginata. Then when the openent was open the drew the scabbard off the second blade and "stabbed" a second oppnent. I suppose it could be effective like a sort of long reach katana with a surprize blade to catch an oponent unawares?

A double-sided sword would be more effective with a longer handle and if it is handled like a polearm, I've seen people test it with both two swords directly attached to one another with no modification, meaning there isn't much space to change your grip, and a long handle on it, meaning you can use it like a polearm Edit: Seki-sensei shows this too, as he grips the flat side of the shorter blade due to holding it with both hands on the handle being uncomfortable Edit 2: This is also further demonstrated by the comparisons to the Joujutsu

In my experience, things like this have a slight advantage against a normal sword. You can use the opponent's attacks and even their parries to power a cut with the back blade and do feint attacks that do not work with a sword. They are fun to use (though hand protection is a concern) and exhausting to fight against. I think there are two reasons that are not used in real history: 1. They are very annoying to carry and not as good as a equally cumbersome polearm. 2. While they are effective against a single sword slightly longer than one of the blades, they are shockingly easy to counter by using two weapons. Dual wielding against this is extremely effective. When we would play with bofferized pipes, my brother would use duel weapons. I had a longer single sword, and my sister had one of these. She had surprisingly good options against me while my brother could basically throw an attack and a block at once to beat her, yet I could usually beat him by using the reach and maneuverability of the longer weapon. I would say: Hand and a half sword >> duel wielding Duel wielding >>> double-bladed swords Double bladed sword > hand and a half sword. But that was not with realistic weight balance (lighter but more tip heavy than real swords) so there may be some differences with real swords as opposed to foamed pipes. And even though none of the fights were equal, any of them could be decided by superior skill and technique.
@biggerdoofus24 күн бұрын
I think a possible stronger reason for not using this weapon historically would be the awkward storage requirement. You can't use Iaijutu or battoujutu quite as well if there's a sheath on both ends, and even just carrying it normally on the waist would likely be much more inconvenient with how far forward the shorter blade would end up.
@julietfischer505624 күн бұрын
This is one of those weapons that, if it existed, would either be for specialized duels or carried by a servant or on a wagon or saddle until time to use it. Given how most battles work, I'd say it's best for one-on-one rather than combat.

At some points, it seems similar to a naginata. I'm sure Seki Sensei could come up with more interesting ways to utilize this, given more time. I'd also bet there are many ways to "half sword" (I'm unsure of the Japanese equivalent) by grasping the faces of the blade between palm and fingertips. Seki-sensei's use of both staff and sword techniques seems to me like what most fantasies of the twinblade weapons envision. A weapon with the versatility of a staff, and the cutting power of a blade, combining all the advantages into one "super-weapon" that is better than either one. To me, it seems like the greatest use would be the ability to block with one blade and using that momentum to strike with the other, making your opponent more wary to use fierce strikes.

The Souls series, Darth Maul's lightsaber, Thanos, and Serge from Chrono Cross all use twinblades, though these all feature blades of the same length and sometimes facing opposite directions (this last change would make a big difference). As a kid, he was one of my favorite characters and I was always curious how one could make this kind of sword work. Love these videos but some of his moves are only doable in an absolute perfect scenario with perfect timing, like at 5:55 he's doing some insanely risky parries that leave almost no room for error or you will die because his distance has to be so close to the opponent.

Sensei's skill with any weapon is impressive. Sensei wore a purple belt today. Why is that? Has Seki Sensei ever used a wooden battle staff with metal tips at both ends?

Give him a Shotel, or a Kopesh next.

I think we need to give him a zweihander. I wanna see him dance lol

If you ever get a chance it would be neat to see what he thinks of a Niuweidao and what strengths and weaknesses it has compared to other sworrds.

It’s not the lethality that’s the issue. As we have seen, a master can make it just as deadly if not more so than a normal sword. It’s the practicality of carrying the damn thing on the march or in battle formation. That’s why two-bladed swords never caught on.

man now i wanna know where i can get that specific twinblade katana used in the vid, cause dammit all of seki sensei didn't show much of a master class he is with numerous weapon types.

I like this weapon. Think of this jo technique combined with hand and half from Western techniques it is not a sword or a glaive. Been working on jo and sword techniques 8:49 with a 30-inch steel bar 3/4 thick. I see a lot of potential for a piece of steel picked up from a farm. now onto this weapon shorten the main blade so it can be used more spear-like and ad in hand in halved techniques with spear, jo, and sword. That would be a very versatile weapon 😀

It would take me less than a minute to mortally wound myself with that weapon.😂 Well done! ❤

That's why most of these fancy weapons (where they exist in real life) are either for show or the best of the best.

I may know some people in Japan with combat quality 14th century European armor if Seki-sensei might like to try fighting against or even wearing that style of armor.

this reminds me of something i created a for a character in a novel im writing, its a long handle on a regular katana, and the end comes off the handle to reveal a tanto blade, so my character in the story often does a "false draw" in which he takes the tanto sheath off and thrusts the scabbard like a spear catching opponents off guard as they think he is going to do a high draw cut. would love an experts opinion on if that would be a good trick to write or if its a little to fantasy

Is dagger hidden inside handle or just extra blade hidden with fake handle?
@kevinmorrice24 күн бұрын
@@vksasdgaming9472 my concept is that the tanto is hidden in the handle, so the handle can be detached to reveal the blade, and the sword in the scabbard becomes a sort of curved spear pole
@vksasdgaming947224 күн бұрын
@@kevinmorrice So it's blade - handle - tanto - covering sheath that looks like handle? Could work as surprise weapon. Not that good if covert carry is required as tanto is solid part of sword.

I can't find any reference of this kind of sword for purchase with those fittings, however there are ones with a Tsuba on both sides or ones like the Stormshadow Linking hero swords from the GI Joe movies.

realistically a Double bladed sworded would never work (Except Sensei makes it works, he'a the exception). A double Tipped Spear though? Sign everyone up. I think a good weapon he would love is a Khopesh sword from Egypt, lot of folk love the Khopesh
