FIRE started as an environmental movement, the philosophy being that you could live a better quality of life, while reducing your impact on the planet. Your idea that FIRE aspirants should aspire to increase their consumption and expenditure sadly goes against this respect for the environment and others, and what we know about how humans can be happy with less consumption.

I certainly wouldn't want a giant mansion to heat and cool all the time. Perhaps one could hire someone to do the yard work as an example of higher spending. In this case, higher spending is not really higher impact on the environment. If you buy food at a restaurant or groceries, you could buy more expensive organic items. It'll cost you more but environmentally, it might be better as long as you make sure you eat everything and do not waste. I think you can probably Fat FIRE and still be environmentally friendly. Maybe one can buy those expensive solar panels in Fat FIRE one could not in Lean FIRE.

nice. I try to ask myself, if a job is taking 10 -20 years off your life, is it worth it to stay in this job? When people trade their health for money, it could be a bad trade.

I've semi-lean fired in the UK, (helped by extremely low fixed mortgage interest rates and our nationalised health care system), and working part-time. Saved a one year emergency fund first. Able to work as a freelance professional very part time and adopt a young child, and - actually spend a lot of time with my child who needs it. Have more job security with more freelance contacts than one employer and can take the little dude with me for meetings as it's a creative job.

Regardless of stage, always be curious, productive and grateful. Avoid focusing on how good the financial future will be because you'll miss out on what you have now. Frugality is a virtue, however I have no problem spending on increasing my standard of living in a meaningful way. Educational travel or visiting elderly relatives. If my leisure budget is not spent like last year, I creatively spend it to make others happy. Lottery winning is the story this year. If needed, casino winnings next year. For me it's a big mistake to let on FIRE status.

Great video, as always! getting to the leanfire number does little to change lifestyle, but may be the biggest milestone mentally. It really hits you with an existential crisis when you realize you're kind of insulated from poverty indefinitely, you get an inner peace as the valuation society gets nullified. Much more energy for creative strategies to explore what is it you really want out of life.

I’m looking to retire this year. I just turned 32 this past November. Planning on getting an RV to not be locked into one location, rent out my paid off house that will generate roughly 25k-28k per year. Granted, if I get serious or get married then I’ll look to settle into a new home to raise a family.

I myself am lean fire and debt free including mortgage. I'm also single with no kids. I am lean FI but I live off of cash flow from my rental property. I'm fortunate in that I don't need to live off the investments. I just keep reinvesting the dividends and let it grow. I kind of see it as a big ole emergency fund. For now, my cash flow from my two rental properties pays all the bills plus gives me a little extra. I live in an lcol and monthly recurring expenses come to 14500.00 a year. My rentals give me about 25k a year (before taxes and maintenance) because one of them is paid off and one has a small mortgage on it and my primary residence is also paid off. The 25k gives me extra money even for minor emergencies like a 3500 surgery bill for my cat because she ate some plastic. I probably would not be comfortable living on my investments alone. My monthly bills are so low that generating a monthly cash flow to pay them is very easy. I love having my FI money as a backup and love watching it grow. It's there in case I should ever need it. Who knows, maybe my investments will grow large enough to be consider Fat Fire one day......now that would be sweet.

So we are going to save up a few more years for regular FIRE (not too extravagant and not too little) and then we will both quit and move to a country with a cheaper cost of living. Lean Fire is a great place to be. It means that you can chose to work or not and if you work you can do what you want. Simply take the income from your work as you wish path and just invest that to increase your investment income getting you closer to fat fire. Sadly, too many people think like it has to be all at once rather than something that you work to over time.

20K a year? That is very tough to do! I am single and house paid off. Property tax is 3k. Car/home insurance is 1k. I pay estimated taxes too, about 1k quarterly. Everything else I put on my credit card and pay off the credit card each month, so that helps with zeroing in on what I spend each month, which is about 1.5k a month. And I do not buy much at all. I do eat very clean and buy fresh foods so that is about 300 month for one person. All that adds up to about 27k a yr! And that is pretty much living a simple life. No Starbucks and no eating out. A trip or two a yr.

im completely lost on what you're saying... the sad truth is im 31 and have been homeless from 22- 30. I was able to find a place thanks to COVID stimulus and the buff in government assistance. However I found a full time job that, while only pays about 23k a year before taxes, I am struggling to find a way to set up myself for financial success. Would you advise I pay for a financial advisor? I watch a ton of your videos and graham stephan, and realize I need to get things set up soon! I am overwhelmed and ideally would like to start a family and be the provider. I suppose I should start finding a higher paying job, but I have school debt already and I feel like I could be spending any free time working on my health (it's bad, being homeless for nearly a decade kinda does that). Not only that, a higher paying job means I must pay higher taxes and more of my debt faster. I could go on about the mental gymnastics trying to get "ahead" is putting me through.... If not financial advice, any mental tips to get through this? Kind Regards

Don’t like FIRE movements I think they are wrong all together. Enjoy life at its fullest with enough income produced by rentals and investments, not live like a peasant all your life because you hate your job! Get another one which pays better and keeps you happy and saving! Good video!

Lean FIRE is indeed living like a peasant. Perhaps people who are looking to quit are just burnt out and need to take a break.

What do you think of Cathie Wood thinking there will be deflation not Inflation because of technology?

I think the reduction in price produced by tech is not more than the increase in prices of many other things. So overall, your costs will still go up but you get a higher of standard of living.

then you're trading years of freedom for money, which to many people is not worth it because your lifetime is finite, you only have a limited amount of years here and you are opting to give them to your employer instead of yourself/family
