yeah, when your feeling independent and then someone tells you to do something likes it's expected of you at all times makes you feel less independent like what you are doing is not a change in modivation. Like if you are cleaning you room for once to try and improve you mood and impress your parents, then they just tell you to do it like, "YEAH, I was GONNA, but THEN you made it like you had to TELL ME or else I "wouldn't do it" which makes me seem lazy and under your power. I WAS DOING IT ON MY OWN TERMS!!! Now it looks like I only did it because YOU ordered me to!!! Now I feel like I'm you slave, and don't want to clean my room anymore. THANKS ALOT for killing my mood. This is your fault, and now you can go tell everyone hoe lazy and unmotivated I am. "ugh"

I think one of the issues for "trying to read" or "trying to listen to music" is that many people do it because they know that others enjoy it and so they think they should be enjoying it themselves. You should do these types of things because you want to, not because you want to want to. I hope that make sense/ is connectable/ won't get people to hate me like I irrationally think they do.

I remember a teacher in college asking the class who disliked reading, and why: 80% of the class said it was because they were forced to read books in school. I don't know about other countries, but in France they give us pretty complicated books to read at age 10/12 with subjects you won't enjoy reading at 12, then call you dumb and interested in nothing if you don't like (or have difficulties) to read this oh so wonderful classic writer of the XVII century... No wonder most kids will be discouraged about reading.

There's nothing wrong with reading, just the way we are enforced into doing so. Reading is suppose to be a fun activity to do in your spare time. But the fun of it is tainted, and it feels more boring and stressful contrary to what it's actually like.

I disagree, but I see that perspective. However, if you actually focus on the book while also just reading it and enjoying it, you should be able to understand the basic themes and plot points without much effort. Also, you need these analysis skills substantially in college so developing those skills early is extremely helpful

LIbby Hawboldt if you want to just pour your heart onto paper, there’s many people who like that sort of thing! I recommend that if you want to go that way, you should first do all the writing your heart out, then try to shape it more. Maybe it turns into a story, maybe not. But that’s what happens sometimes. Just keep writing, that’s all you can do. Best of luck with your book!

The worst situation a person who is getting into reading, is being forced. I enjoy reading because I enjoy sharing with others who are curious about the series I'm reading, and it's a great way for me to get to know what others enjoy reading at times if they're reading themselves. It also makes for a great resource for inspiration for me since I love drawing art a lot. Also also I prefer Manga because it's easier for me to connect with the story.

Verse 1] Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what's on the other side? Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide So we've been told and some choose to believe it I know they're wrong wait and see [Hook] Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me [Verse 2] Who said that every wish would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star? Somebody thought of that and someone believed it Look what it's done so far What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing and what do we think we might see? [Hook] Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me [Verse 3] All of us under its spell We know that it's probably magic Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors The voice might be one and the same I've heard it too many times to ignore it It's something that I'm supposed to be [Hook] Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection The lovers, the dreamers and me

There's only one time forced reading actually made me like books and it's actually stuck with me even to this day. back in 6th grade I had a reading assignment where we basically read a book of our choice and tell the class about what we read, and the teacher had small makeshift library in her room so we picked books from there, I chose the first book in a series called wings of fire (didn't know it was the first book I just got lucky), the author divides up the book into three parts so the teacher let me so my project on the first part but I wound up liking the book series a lot. Now I have every single book in that series which for the main series is 15 books, along with a few side stories, so yeah that's the only time a forced reading assignment got me to actually like a certain book, every other time I just wasn't interested because we didn't pick the book ourselves and it was always books like animal farm and what not

It does seem that The Powers That Be have decided certain books are "important for you to have read" because "people are going to reference them." And they're all ancient, tedious tomes that require you to understand what day to day life was like when they were written. I remember, I was in like late high school, and my grandmother handed me this book called Utopia, by Lincoln Child. It's a thriller book set in a futuristic amusement park, the main character has a daughter who has an mp3 player. I remember that detail because for the first time in my life I was reading a book that had someone my actual age in it. Like by this time I had read some Clive Cussler novels, some Clancy and King, but these were still written about, like, the 1980's. Utopia was written in 2003. I was a teenager with an mp3 player in 2003. It kinda bent my brain that books could be...recent. Because every book I'd ever been made to study in school was older than my teacher.

For me, reading just refuses to play nice in my brain because it feels like I'm accomplishing nothing. Yes, I'm enriching myself over the course of several 10s of hours because I'm a slow reader, but I could get similar enrichment that actually engages my other senses by *doing* something in a videogame or in real life or maybe even watching a movie or tv show or, heck, write a character or respond in an rp. I like accomplishing stuff, which with ADHD is a double-edged sword because now i need a project in progress in almost every facet of my life that, due to ADHD, becomes a battle "work on that character! No, finish grinding for money to get those ribbons! Work on this other character! Are you ever gonna continue watching Kamen Rider OOO?" to the point I cant decide because if i start doing on thing, i'm exclusive not doing another thing. Like, I could get my walking for the day in Pokémon go in, but then i cant shiny hunt because the glare or work on homework because i'm walking or this or that, so what often happens is I lay idle watching youtube videos doing none of the things I should/want to be doing. ADHD is fun. It doesn't like reading either especially it's an online class for college and we're given no reading guide so it translates to "you have the textbook. Read every word from it like it's a novel." which, surprise surprise, is NOT what theyre designed for. Especially that facilities planning textbook, i would try reading it and the pages turn to static. Oh yeah and I spent a summer reading a christmas carol because "ooo this is one of the books youll go over in class. So you better read it ahead of time to get a head start." 2 problems: I'm a slow reader and charles dickens was paid by the word when he wrote it, and WE NEVER WENT OVER IT IN CLASS. I WOULDVE HAD SEVERAL MORE HOURS OF THAT SUMMER IF IT WASNT FOR THAT. also heehoo, i didnt retain a single thing about besides the stuff in the movies and the excrutiating design given to the scenery (a symptom of the paid by the word thing). But one of the books we actually read in high school was Farewell To Arms, an Earnest Hemmingway novel. I hated it. It was hideously boring, only thing I remember are the series of unfortunate events befalling the protagonist(too graphic for me to have in a youtube comment aside from shrapnel in his butt and jaundice) and it being, surprise surprise, about nihilism! Why bother getting your hopes up when the world will just vibe check you into oblivion and nothing will go right at all. Nope. Nothing. Yknow, the staple message of both earnest hemmingway stories we read, the other was a short story about a guy thinking he befriended a wolf in the winter but soon as his health went south the wolf just ditched him and left him to freeze to death. Farewell to Arms was the only novel from that entire class I just gave up reading. I didnt feel like wasting my time poring over those pages anymore. Finally, I didnt like american literature class(the one with the novels and earnest hemmingway). I understand letting us highschoolers brainstorm over the themes and what stuff represented, but after the 18th class where we all get the messaging and themes horribly wrong, it really makes you not want to try. Like, if we come up with "what if the turtle means this?" and it's just "no, youre wrong. Here's the *correct* interpretation." Mr. Neville was a great guy, but I hated the ciriculum he had to teach. My main issue with school reading is the breakneck pace. "you gotta read, like 5000 words a night every night while still juggling your other 5 classes. Have fun!" I had to read some novels for my reading merit badge in boyscouts and I just read at my own pace, yes, mom made me do 30 minutes a day just so i would finish them ever, but it gave me time to enjoy them! Also, sorry writing and rhetoric teacher, I didnt read a second outside of the designated reading time in class. Still enjoyed Big Brother. Shame I didnt finish the sequel. Also I read Holes for the merit badge and really loved it. Will I read it again? No, but I'll watch the movie if I get the chance.

I think it should be more widely known that forcing a child to do a thing will always just make them resent it, especially when you then position the things they actually want to do as a reward for doing this thing because now there's the double negativity of being forced to do it and also being kept away from the thing you want to do. Like you need to encourage good behavior not force it, with reading this isn't even hard like just be generous about buying books and make sure to engage with the child about what they're currently reading. Also if you do think they spend too much time on video games don't make it a reward for reading, just separately set some sort of limit to how much they can do that because then the child will just naturally chose the second most fun thing to do. Like the child is not going to think about the bigger picture here of whether or not something is good in the long term for them since they live in a world where they have no control over anything so the big picture just doesn't exist.

This video shoud've been sponsored by audible! They definitely missed an oportunity here. I'm dyslexic so reading for me is like an endurance event. The words dance around on the page and give me motion sickness. I've got a little purple bit of acetate I can put over the words, but being real, it's not like I carry it around with me and I've got an audible account so...yea. I too think making reading a chore in school contributed to my distaste for the medium. I distinctly remember teachers saying "If you don't all behave you'll be reading/writting all lesson" (like instead of some fun practical thing) and I remember thinking even then like "dude, making reading and writting a punnishment is going to bite us in the ass in the future. Where did you get your teaching degree?" so yea, Audio books Jaden, that's the ticket. Also I think whoever made dyslexia so hard to spell aught to be in hell now. That's just deliberate cruelty.

I gotta say I never went to high school, dropped out of middle school at the age of 16, I don’t remember any reading assignments, I guess that’s a high school experience. I hated academics in school, but the one thing I will always be grateful for is that I learned how to read, I loved reading novels. There’s just no other form of entertainment that can match that feeling of finishing a good story, and I do it all, I’ve gamed my whole life, enjoyed films and shows my whole life, was even athletic in my younger days, but after reading that last page in a book, I just feel so……….profound in my thoughts or something hard to explain, there’s just nothing to match it, I do got to say though, if I was being forced to read certain books I didn’t sought out myself I can completely understand why you got turned off from reading, I mean the very reason that I failed at school was the teachers ordering me to do this or that and giving me homework so yeahhhh I get it. I’m into science fiction and horror books, it really helps knowing what your tastes are when it comes to literature to get the most mileage out of this medium, but to each their own.

The gazing of the building represents Jimmy's repressed feelings of inadequacy and insignificance in life. Throughout the narrative his internal conflict stems from his inability to move forward both mentally and physically, culminating in his lackadaisical personality and resulting in missing many opportunities to improve his lifestyle. This coupled with his failure to feel any semblance of accomplishment has diminished his mental acumen to the point where even so much at glancing at any object bigger than him sends him into a spiraling depression straight into the murky abyss he belongs into. Boom, give me that 9 on the AP essay!

*The cold empty streets, which not a single soul dare roams, Jimmy is there. Multiple buildings surround him, while some open but others not. A particular building, with crumbling roof shingles that can fall at any time. Multiple cracked windows, but one specific one is cracked in the upper right corner that allows a slither of light to peak through. If you look close enough, you can see the rusted obstacles inside the abandoned hospital. The floor had cracks all in it, some even falling through down to the other floor. But Jimmy never dare go inside. He’d see other teenagers thinking they’re funny, but never end up coming out.*

I used to love reading, I could crush a Stephen King novel in a few days. Until 8th grade… that’s when it stopped being fun and was more forced on us. Books like Hatchet weren’t too bad, but once it turned into things like Catcher in the Rye and How to Kill a Mockingbird; reading wasn’t fun anymore. It was work These days I can read and not have an overwhelming sense of guilt or urgency, but it’s still difficult just to get through one chapter some times

I feel ya. If the book interests me? Yeah, I ain't putting that sucker down if I can help it. And I understand on an intellectual level that MANY of the books that you have to read for school are often historically important, or are literary masterpieces that might say important things about the human condition that are relatively timeless. But damn if I couldn't give a rats ass about Holden Caulfield, or about the tale of either of the two cities... One of my favourite English teachers once recommended a book to me. After a week of genuinely trying, I could NOT get past the first chapter, and then the due date on the book report was looming... I wrote my report on that first chapter, and then went on to explain why I couldn't manage the rest; comparing it to the tale of two cities, which, despite the iconic opening lines, I could NOT get through without the help of coles notes. He gave me an A-, and I went back to reading what I liked when it wasn't a mandatory part of the curriculum.

I liked reading so much during elementary until they introduced the A.R. Points system. (you read books and take tests on them online for points) I remember reading all of the harry potter books and percy jackson books just to get as many points as I could because you got to go on a field trip at the end of the year if you earned enough points. I earned double the required amount but my gpa sucked because I never did homework. At the end of that year we got a new principal and he changed the system so that we also had to have a c+ average to be able to qualify for the trip so i wasn’t even able to go and received nothing for the points i had earned. Idk if that’s what it was but after that I just couldn’t get into the books as deeply as i used to. I used to feel like I was actually in the world of whatever book I was reading but it just kept getting less immersive.I’m thinking of re reading everything I’ve read before just to see if I can feel some of the magic I used to feel.

I think I'm in the same boat with you there: a former ADHD kid who despises reading because of highschool trauma. It's always been a source of shame for me, and I am still trying to work on myself, but I think I've found peace with it by just accepting that it's okay to be a non-reader. This isn't to say that I ENDORSE non-reading. Reading is a really constructive hobby to have if you make it work for you. Nobody should take PRIDE in being a non-reader, but they deserve to have self-acceptance for it. They also deserve to be able to talk about it without receiving judgement or unsolicited book recommendations.
