My only gripe with my Empire 40 is that it’s really heavy. The leather is very nice. I carry my 13 in laptop with no problem. It slips right in. I unbutton the side straps for extra space as needed. I think the design is great.

I'm glad it works for you. It's a big problem for me with the laptop because it doesn't fit correctly into the bag because of those buckles. I'm curious to know what extra space you get unbuttoning the side straps? For me, it didn't really seem to create any extra space at all. I know I'm in the minority here. This bag is getting a lot of love.

Great rant Gene! I knew right away that this bag wouldn’t work for me. I saw one at the boutique and I had a hard time lifting it (I do have dexterity problems with my hands). That bag weighs a ton! I couldn’t imagine how bad it would be once you filled it.

Hi Gene! Do you still use your Coach Rogue 39?? I bought the Empire 48 but feel like the Rogue 39 would be more practical for my needs and was wondering your thoughts after using it for sometime.

While i can appreciate this person’s perspective i think that his dissatisfaction with the bag isnt with Coach its with his expectations and lack of research prior to purchase thats to blame. He mentions how several other videos he watched suggest its a work bag but no where in Coachs description of the bag say its a work bag. He also mentions that the bag he’s purchased doesn’t fit a 13” laptop. This fact is easily remedied by looking at the dimensions of the bag on Coachs website. Perhaps the Empire 48 would have been more suitable as it does fit a 13” laptop. But how one utilizes their bag including its amenities should be thoroughly investigated prior to purchasing at any price point.

The bag is a badly designed bag and it’s boring as hell - it takes people loading it with charms to make it remotely interesting. I hate it even more now than when I filmed this. The dissatisfaction is with Coach and their line up of poorly designed bags, boring bags, and bad (except for Mint & Serf) collaborations. I’ve learned, aside from the Rogue (which is an amazing bag) Coach isn’t a brand for me. There are heaps of European brands, in the same price range, that are much more interesting.

I personally love mine. I’ve undone the sangles and set them free, letting them flap around. It gives the bag a chic, relaxed look. When the sangles are buckled, I think the bag looks a little too corporate girlie/briefcasey.

I kind off agree about the hang tag...I have a small vintage Coach bag with a full brass tag - gorgeous and gold, but that metal string which looks like something I hang a sink plug really de-elevated that whole brass tag. Sometimes I wonder if they have an actual bag designer.....someone who actually thinks about design and usability of a bag.

I respect your review but I got this bag and I'm obsessed with it. It's the level of quality, shape and size that I could never afford from another brand. It's hard to carry around as a daily bag, I've learned that quickly simple because of it's size but it's going to be perfect for work trips and travel IMO. And me personally, I see nothing wrong with a chain and charm in a professional setting as long as it's not over the top distracting or offensive. Great review though!

I love and appreciate this video because it was thrilling to get my hands on this bag but the thrill is gone.. I have only worn it 2x and just added some extras like a chain and charms to make it better but it's not working! I just hope that it puddles, softens and slouches and gets the worn look I want - Im going to try to make it my everyday workbag and hope that love will grow lol Also you speaking on the tags it didn't register to me until you pointed it out! Thank you for such an honest review! We don’t see these enough! Something that seems like a small issue to someone may be huge to someone else. The hangtag gives outlet vibes, not luxury. At that price point make a decent hangtag. I cannot understand the buckles on the inside. I would be worried about damaging the products in my bag. I do love the leather and classic look, but functionally it’s a no for me.

Sorry you hate it. I do agree with you that it needs to be a bit larger, and the sides should be able to adjust for laptops, etc. I only use mine when I need a navy blue bag. The website is still fully stocked with the emipre except for the merlow, so i dont think you will get retail for it.

I can relate to the laptop problem. May I make a suggestion please try the 35. The 35 is more organized can hold a 13 inch laptop it has the middle zipper pocket which keeps it balance and you don’t have the problem with the bag tipping over. Plus 35 doesn’t come with that top zipper.

I totally ended up feeling the same way and decided rather than regret it later, I sent mine back. The size just wasn’t right for me and I knew it wasn’t practical long term. I appreciate your honest review. I’ve seen so many unboxings of this bag but no reviews on how it functions- now we know why. I use a backpack for work so had no use for the 40 but did get the 26 size in Maple and am actually loving it. The leather and color are beautiful and it holds all my daily essentials. Dressed her up with a charm too. Still has the cheap a** hang tag though. 😂😂😂

It seems the bag needs an hard insert to hold its shape better and create a middle slot for the laptop that divides the inside of the bag. Otherwise, it only becomes a work bag for people with smaller electronic devices who mostly carry binders or books and personal items. These folks would also need to keep their bag pretty full, so the feet actually work.

Very helpful!!!! My happiest bag-space is in the 35-40 range, often even for a Daily, but for a 40 I expect some practicality, i.e. fitting my laptop AND being able to close/zip up. For me a 48 is an overhead-sized travel bag. Even first class on most domestic US flights won’t fit anything bigger than a 45 under-seat, and even that sometimes doesn’t work without crushing a B. Hmm. I’m hitting Pause on my hunt for an Empire for now. Thanks!! It does look like beautiful quality, sickly hangtag aside!

I actually like my bag MORE than this one, which I use for work (although you could carry it for anything): Mark and Graham the Elizabetta bag in black. It works excellently as a work bag, the grain leather is GORGEOUS. And it’s $400. It’s also “low key” - not “label in your face”. It’s classy and timeless. Swoon. I can’t bring myself to buy this Coach bag although I’ve had my eye on it. The bag I bought is my “Margeaux” bag.

💯 On point correct Gene!……… as a designer and also from my designer colleagues…… agree with you,they made several design flaws in this bag, as you stated……. plus the leather is just toooooooo thin! For a substantial bag such as that, their vintage heritage leather should have been used. Really telling where your laptop was briefly in there and it has a very visible dent in the top. You should sell it for your opinion is correct……ps Check out some vintage coach😃

Hi Gene! I would love to see you compare the functionality of the Empire to the Rogue 39. I am trying to decide which to purchase. I was going to purchase the Rogue, but then the black color I wanted sold out. During that time, the Empires restocked. I like that it felt lighter than the Rogue and costs less. However, I just I feel like it may lack the functionality I need. Also, now that the buzz is wearing off, I am seeing more negative reviews on the Empire.

Nice review … tried the empire in store but i prefer the 26 smallest size as it’s perfect for daily stuff… the rest are too huge and heavy. If i need to carry a laptop i usually carry my longchamp or lululemon backpack for better weight distribution 😊 big totes hurt my frail shoulders 😅

I do agree with you Gene, the plastic like hang tag, plastic inside label, poorly designed for a laptop and i pad. I do not like the way it tips over. The leather is attractive and perhaps as an overnight bag it may be alright. I will not buy one, I will a continue to use my 1990 LV Carry All for getaways.

I have that LV Carry All, but I just got a Keepall (I'm so reckless) that I'll probably sell it. Redundant to have both. Yes, I may have forgotten to mention that Coach doesn't put leather story patches on leather bags.

It’s unfortunate, but if it doesn’t work for you then it doesn’t. I think people take everything personal when it’s just a matter of preference or opinion. I love the bag but decided not to buy one because I don’t think it’d get used. The leather is beautiful. I agree the hang tag is a no for me. I think you should sell it now while the bag is still so in demand and put the $ towards something you love.

I loved this review. I would carry it as a work bag and have to drag my work lap top back and forth on occasion so I would look to this bag to function for that purpose

There are bag organisers with laptop sleeve on the side out there. Ur laptop will stay standing even when u put the bag down. Again, look for organisers that have pockets around the perimeter. That way u still have space in the middle for water bottle, tech pouch, etc. at least that’s how I do it. Just got my empire 40 honey brown for 2 weeks. First thing I got was a perfect organiser. Oh and I added a couple of holes on the strap so I can shoulder it quickly whenever I need to, which is quite often. It’s how u make it work, mate. If u want the perfect perfect perfect work bag, I’d say get the Jemmabags EMMA 39. I have both, I’d pick the empire more due to its being more edgy.

I loveee my Empire bag for work. A work bag in my opinion should be simple and classy. And it looks better than the Margaux. And it will age beautifully. Have Coach make you a custom hang tag. I can put my iPad mini in the side pocket and my laptop in the bag.

One of my favorite plain work style totes from Coach is my vintage black Bleecker Tote 9306. No feet but indestructible, even at the bottom. Very roomy and nondescript with long strap drop.

Yes I agree! I am a Coach fend right now. Nearly all my Coach bags are part of the 1941 collection as is the Coach Empire. They should definitely have given the 1941 hangtag to this bag...the cost justifies the nicer tag. I also don't like the new Coach stamping on this or any of their new bags...it looks cheap. The top handles should be longer to fit over one's shoulder also it should definitely have leather interior at this price point. I've looked at this bag several times in person as I know it's the new it bag and I just hate it.

That tag looks like it should be on an outlet bag, that's ridiculous! I don't understand the purpose of them anyhow, they get lost so easily and a lot of times they end up getting in the way and you end up taking them off. Perhaps their Warner bag (outlet bag) would work better as a work bag? It's very classy looking, I have the prior version when it was the Ashton.

Sorry - I’m an old school coach girlie. For ten years I wouldn’t buy coach- Disney? Snoopy? Wtf??? Coach forgot who pays for these bags . Grown a** women that don’t need flash, glitz, fringe etc . This doesn’t need to be a ‘ work bag’ it could just be a handbag that my iPad will fit. It doesn’t scream logos it’s just a nice leather bag. It doesn’t even need to be an ‘ it’ bag. Instagram and you people that spout off on these bags make it an ‘ it’ bag. Jeez dude , this ISNT a work bag. It’s just a nice basic leather bag. If you needed a work bag - take your laptop to the shop and test out other bags. Buckles on the outside? Yeah we’ve seen it before - I saw it 10 montage when I looked at my 15 year old Birkin. It’s not the bag for you. Full stop. Take it back. Obviously.

Thanks for sharing a different take! For me, the fabric lining makes me suuuuuuper sus about the leather. If they’d built the bag out of quality full grain leather they could have just left the inside raw like they did in their old bags. The fact that put in a fabric liner makes me think they’re trying to hide something
