Went out and shot some Kodak Portra 160 with the Minolta SRT 100x and some Kodak UltraMax with the Minolta Dynax 500si. Not everything went according to plan.

Cyan cast, if its on all the negatives, indicates that the processing machine had a either a faulty temp control sensor and as a result they developed your film in cold developer or the developer was not active, old . The rusty colour shadows also indicate inadequate bleaching. You mentioned that you wanted to develop your own films in C41 cehmistry. This will avoid the above problem only if you could manage to keep the Dev Temp + _ 0.5C, otherwise you start to get colourcasts. This is mperative as the Dev times for C41 process are in the order of only 3 minutes or so in the chemicals. My advice is to find a reputable lab and let them do the work and good luck.

First time viewer and new subscriber! God that's happened to me before too. I tried some local place and my scans sucked and I didn't get my negatives back. I use the Darkroom here in the US only now and haven't had an issue. It's a shitty feeling seeing bad development for the first time knowing that all that work was for nothing.

Hi Adam, from Las Vegas, NV. I have fallen in LUV with shooting film again, but ditched the Color film for B&W, and develop and scan myself. The Photo Lab was scrapping so much of the 35mm & 120 color negatives, that I got tired of having them re-scan etc. and never looked back. I LUV the power of B&W film!!! Give it a try maybe?? Good ole Ilford Developing starter kits are EZ to use and give beautiful results on all B&W film speeds. Good luck!

Too many camera places have stopped developing (doing only prints now) or have seriously screwed up my negatives. A free extra print for compensation does me no good when theyve stained the negatives!! I'm working ona home dev setup and maybe DSLR scanning. Some progress, but halfway there.

I've had my local lab ruin a few rolls of Cinestill for me. Both 50D and 800T. So I stopped using them for any Cinestill film and have started sending it out to a mail in lab. I don't want any more ruined film. Luckily they do a good job with the other films I've tried like Superia.

Hilarious but true, if the development or scanning or both are being done wrong, you could opt for a service that others have praised or as you prefer, to do it by yourself and that way, you have more control on how the images finally look, combined with your camera settings, light, developing methods, scans or exposing on photographic paper and post. Those cyan photos dont look so bad except for the red shadows. Ive seen red in shadows in movies, but its very subtle to give it a rich tone and not like this, but would love to see a video where you show bad results like these and how you fix them on post. Also if you do have plans, if you havent already, would love to see your cinematography on super 8 and 16mm, because your compositions are really good.

Thank you friend, there’s plenty of photographers that are better than me but I do think composition is one of my better skills. Making a video about fixing the images is a great idea. I’ve got my development and scanning kit on the way so that’s a video to make for sure. Doubt I’ll be shooting any super 8 or 16mm any time soon but it’s an idea to put at the back of the line for sure. Too many ideas and no enough time to implement them all until I because a rich KZbinr with all the time in the world.

@@adamblack9837 With your narration on this video, I can say you can write well for a short film you can submit to a festival. Composition is everything, because it proves that you can compose a photo (or an illustration) in ANY medium and make it look good with just composing and using what you have to achieve a decent exposure, so I don't know what makes a good photographer, if not a composition. The best camera and lens and the subject can produce a shit image just with a bad composition. And the photos in the beginning by your friend are also good. So if you have two people, its easier for a movie to handle direction and cinematography

Yeah that’s a famous line by Bob Ross too: “We don’t make mistakes. We have happy accidents”. It’s a better attitude to have than the one I displayed when getting these poor quality Portra shots back. Yeah they’ve not turned out how they should but a few people have pointed out some positives about them at least.

@@adamblack9837 I think in film all the "wrong" tints and colors usually fall into a good or interesting color scheme. If the colors compliment each other it's really cool, otherwise you can always tweek them to feel correct.

I assumed they would’ve kept up with technological advancements in all these years but apparently not. I’ve had a few people tell me that lab scans tend to be terrible. Time to grab a light box and a macro lens then.

Lab scans of today are terrible as the scanning machines are either too old and not servicable anymore or the lab can not afford invest in either a Drumscanner or a Flextight of some sort, these are about £15000~£20000 now. Regretfully, Nikon stopped producing their superb line of Coolscan ED scanners a long time ago and what is on the market is ridiculously priced for a used item, and there is no support for them either. That leaves the Epson V series ( just adequate if one knows how to go about getting the best out of them,) or the usual Chinese made scanners that are marketed under different brandnames in different part of the world. Nikon really do need to take their finger out of their backside and start producing Coolscans again. BTW, for information a ddrumscanner is not digital but analogue, fully analogue. The scanning technology has not progressed for over twent years.

Hi! I am a new subscriber! Great video. I would hate to have that experience with my negatives and this is why I develop my film at home. With the recent crazy film prices, I am switching to B&W and I have been developing it more often now aswell. My recommendation is to invest in equipment for development if you think you will be shooting a lot of film. If you don't expect to develop a lot, might be best just to look for a better lab.

Yeah I’ve bought everything for developing my own film now. Figure even if I only go through 20 rolls every 6 months (or how ever long it takes the chemicals to expire) it’s still cheaper than paying a lab to do it. Plus I have full control this way.

The problem you had with your Portra 160 is only the fault of your processing lab. The symptoms you show, an overall cyan color shift plus loss of dark area density with a orange-red color shift, are classic leuco-cyan dye formation. In the C-41 process, this results from improper bleaching of the film after development. In this case, the problem is very likely either use of over-aged or reuse of exhausted bleach, or the bleach or blix used on your film was contaminated. There is modest possibility that if your film is reprocessed through real C-41 bleach and fixer by a competent lab, much of the problem can be corrected. We would like to support our local photo shops, but many do C-41 processing in-house with compromised chemical kits of the sort sold to home users (which because of the short cuts in the process they offer are more prone to the problem), often with equipment and skill no better than you could do yourself, and often with less care.

I was wondering as well if your film was insufficiently bleached. This is a fairly easy fix, but since your negs are likely cut, this will need to be done in a bath by hand. However, it can be done in the light.

Yeah I’m hoping that’s what it is and there wasn’t a screw up in development. I’ll eventually set myself up with a light box and a macro lens for the GFX. I’ll be able to scan everything myself then.

I been thinking that a lot of older generation photographers moved on to digital because the older you get the less tolerant you are to bullshit ... and you are prone to deal with more bullshit when you shoot film ... the film photographers nowadays seem to be younger and experiencing film like they are experiencing something new (to them) ... will be interesting to see how many of them stick to film once the novelty is gone

I’m certainly firm in the “no bullshit” category. There are younger film photographers with a lot of experience who genuinely love it. But I bet there’s just as many that will discover it’s not for them. I’m going to keep shooting film but I’ll do it sparingly, maybe 1 roll a month, and I’ll look at developing myself so I’m not at someone else’s mercy.

I feel your depression, at least you got one or two from it , and they were nice, but yeah get what your saying ,some butt hole does into work with a hangover from the night previous after possibly been shoot down in the bar to what he thought looked like a gem after ten pints to only find the beer Goggles were on inside out,, yeah I feel your depression.
