I believe Kyle did it right. 2 ghostly flickers would blink the dualcaster mage (which was resolved and already on the battlefield, without having copied anything) and a land with the first copy. Then the etb of the dualcaster would copy the ghostly flicker still on the stack, going infinite. He could then have chosen not to cast the ghostly flicker at all. However I choose to believe he went along with the table for sake of simplicity and nicity.
@jayvigg2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. He was trying to say dual caster already resolved. He didn’t cast flicker with dual caster on the stack, he let the original dual caster etb fizzle and he was going for the flicker to get the etb again, so he would’ve had flicker in hand and 3 open mana. Still great game!!
@venomclay2 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised the off screen assumed judge was getting this wrong. The Mage just needed to be on the field already (original cast trigger is irrelevant), get flickered, and still see a flicker on the stack. The copy resolves and flickers it, so the Mage comes in and sees the original Flicker, which it copies (going infinite). The original target of the original flicker is no longer there, so the spell would normally fizzle, but it never gets a chance to try and resolve.
@valentinpoblete19402 жыл бұрын
Ur right
@kukivave2 жыл бұрын
@@venomclay I believe technically, it would also work if he flashed in dual caster in response to ghostly flicker, in which case he actually doesnt have to care about the Krark triggers.... the ghostly flicker cast, triggers the two Krark triggers, in response to the second krark trigger going on the stack, he casts dual caster.... dual caster copies the original spell on ETB.... as it's an ETB dual caster is on the battle field so is a legal target to target with the copy.... the original and the krark triggers never need to resolve.
@cwest13372 жыл бұрын
this triggered me beyond belief it was blatantly clear to me what the intention was. Dualcaster was resolved flicker was cast at sorcery speed and had the copies successfully happened it would have worked as stated however. If he just counters the ghostly flicker being targeted by the dualcaster then it ends the loop anyways.

Man, the nostalgia seeing Zach in this episode is surreal.. I started playing Magic around 6 years old back in the Odyssey cycle days. Playing at such a young age, it can be daunting to hold your own for more than a few reasons. Especially in a multiplayer game with older players who have more value in their decks, & just have more time in the game than you do. BUT, nonetheless you see Zach doing some real things man! He's not letting himself get bullied, he's talking enough trash to show he isn't scared or shy, he's doing smart moves (politically & mechanically), he's garnering genuine respect at the table by being himself; it's so freaking awesome to see that. He's building serious skills because he has to work harder in game. It just brings me back to my own time of learning all these things in Magic: the levels, nuances, in all aspects of the games. I literally grew up playing MtG & you can see that with Zach. It's inspiring & fun to watch - so cool to see the next generation of players. One of the many beauties of Magic is the age-barrier doesn't exist because of the game & that a kid can have as much sway in said game as an adult; everyone is equal. That is truly showcased in this episode & that's why its one of the best episodes for me... thank you : )

I know it didn't matter in this match but a spell cast with flashback can't return to it's owner's hand because it is exiled after it leaves the stack instead of going anywhere else (not just if it resolves). So Kyle wouldn't be able to keep trying to make a lot of red mana over and over. (but as I said, he only did it once and got 1 net mana so it didn't matter) Now I must say this was one of my favorite episodes of season 1, I'd really love to see Zach again on the show and if possible, playing with the Professor (imagine that! @_@). Vanishing on Krark would make Krark phase back in at the start of Kyle's turn, because he controls the permanent that's phasing out
@Ukami1172 жыл бұрын
This! They also misspoken and suggested a commander could be phased out forever if Lynch left the game. Phasing out and in is covered under the rules 702.26(a). Before the untap step any permanents controlled by the active player that are phased out phase in. So Krark would phase in before Kyle's untap step. Further note that [Oubliette] will not phase out a creature forever if the player controlling [Oubliette] leaves the game. The creature would phase in immediately upon the player leaving the game, because Oubliette is a "One-Shot Effect" (Rule 610). It is the same rational as the card [Cast Out] vs. [Journey to Nowhere]. Because, [Cast Out]'s return trigger resolves when the card ETBs the return happens no matter how [Cast Out] leaves the battle field (the return effect doesn't put a trigger on the stack). However, [Journey to Nowhere] actually puts a trigger on the stack when it leaves the fields because the return effect is a triggered ability triggered by [Journey to Nowhere] leaving the battlefield Note the language of the seconds paragraph "When" for 'Journey' vs "Until" for [Cast Out]. Meaning [Journey to Nowhere] is a triggered ability but [Cast Out] creates a "One-Shot effect" under rule 610 vs "triggered ability" Rule 603.

Interesting play there on the whole take back on a counterspell to go back and counter the spell. I know he’s a kid, but he def showed enough table knowledge at the time to kind of eradicate that argument. I think using a counterspell after another spell has been cast on the stack is just a bad move in general. Kyle def made it clear that the dual caster mage had resolved and there was enough time in between spells to warrant not going back. It’s just a bad move in magic to go back and counter a previous spell after another is on the stack. The line of play was made distinct as well as he gave ghostly flicker flashback. So the combo line was made prevalent then. Once again, it was a kid so I get it, and Kyle was a good sport about it. I also feel like take back counters should be done at sorcery speed, or at least only on the players turn, to prevent really bad feels bade like this, or at least as soon as another spell has resolved you can no longer take back. It’s how we do it at my own table and it has really worked.
@chaosxombie2 жыл бұрын
That interaction was interesting, because the way Kyle played it would have worked, but relied on winning a coin flip to blink the DC mage. It protected him from any singular counter-spell, as any won coinflips would still try to resolve even if the original is countered. The way they retroactively played it meant that it didn't rely on a coin flip, but made the combo more susceptible to being countered.
@NMS1272 жыл бұрын
@@chaosxombie The combo wasn't as good as Kyle said it was. He only would have gotten infinite mana, not infinite Dualcasters, since it was a flicker spell, not a token copy creator. Also, it would still have been possible to break it up with a single counterspell by waiting until the first flicker on the Dualcaster resolves and then countering the spell that the ability targets.

It didn’t really matter here, but for future reference, I’m pretty sure that a flashback card getting returned to your hand would still get exiled. The reminder text on the card isn’t the full rules text (I think reminder text has a little more leniency with its wording). From the gatherer ruling: “A spell cast using flashback will always be exiled afterward, whether it resolves, is countered, or leaves the stack in some other way.”
@NMS1272 жыл бұрын
That's correct.

Oof, Kyle you could have done the Dualcaster / Flicker combo the way you first tried it. If Dualcaster is ALREADY on the battlefield, cast Ghostly Flicker targeting two lands, then you are relying on Krark triggers to get at least ONE copy of Flicker, which can target Dualcaster and a land, which upon Dualcaster's new ETB can target the original Flicker that's still on the stack. It works this way because technically each Krark trigger resolves individually, placing new copies onto the stack above the next trigger. Although Zach could still stop the combo by countering the original Ghostly Flicker, since if that is gone from the bottom of the stack, there is no spell left for a flickered Dualcaster to target anymore, despite there still being some Krark triggers left.

Just for future reference: you are NOT allowed to bounce a spell (pyretic ritual) back to your hand from a flashback cast (like snapcaster gives) you can attempt to, but it will get exiled instead: “If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card *instead of putting it anywhere else* any time it would leave the stack.” (rule 702.34a ) The one exception is feather, as feather specifically *exiles* the flashbacked card as well first.

Zach = Future GOAT. Kyle = GOAT. Great episode!
@blakerobinson41982 жыл бұрын
Alright. 1) Kyle had it right. He can cast dualcaster mage not targeting anything with the etb. Then cast ghostly flicker. Targeting dualcaster mage and a land, and if the ghostly flicker gets copied with kraarkashima, he gets infinite ghostly flickers. He had it right, and i don't think Zach would have countered a dualcaster targeting nothing. With that said.... 2) Zach was such a good guest. Really good camera presence, and made for such a fun game. Wish i got to see his deck pop off, but i do appreciate that nobody pulled punches against him. His threat assessment and understanding of the game are better than a lot of my friends who have been playing for 10+ years. Well done IHYD!
@AlsoNamedChad2 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it too late for Joe to even try to Swords Bruna? He would have had to do it with Bruna’s ability on the stack, as attaching the auras was part of the ability resolving. Therefore, Joe couldn’t have used swords after he saw what was being attached, because Bruna had protection from all colors by then.

Kyle actually made a great play, he just didn't realize it: Say he copied pyretic ritual one more time and got at least 2 more mana. He then Acquires the Lightning Greaves that Lynch must have in his deck, then copies Bruna as he did and equips the greaves and attacks. What he probably didn't realize in the moment is that his Bruna will steal ALL AURAS on the battlefield and equip to his copy of Bruna and then just kill Lynch with his copy who is now unblockable, has infect, 17/17 etc. From there, with all the auras getting exiled from Lynch dying, who knows what happens, but that was probably his best out and would have been sooo spicy (at least rather then trying to endlessly cast pyretic + bolt).

Kyle cast Dualcaster mage on an empty stack, just to have him on board. Then he ghostly flickered in order to flicker Dualcaster and do his shenanigans. That means, if Dualcaster was to be countered, he wouldn't have to play ghostly flicker and he would have had mana open. Saying that you counter Dualcaster after he hit the field and another spell was cast just made it more confusing for no real reason. All in all, if Dualcaster was countered, Kyle could have never flashed back Ghostly flicker, giving him 3 extra mana. Also, 2 of that was blue, if that mattered
@NMS1272 жыл бұрын
Agreed. But the combo could still have been stopped by a single counter by waiting until the first flicker on the Dualcaster and countering the spell its ability targeted. Also, it wouldn't have made infinite Dualcasters, only infinite mana, so it might not have won the game anyway.
@795reaper2 жыл бұрын
He definitely would have won with infinite mana having a shock (?) Spell and playing it again and again from his hand and the copies that would have been made. Once he got the mana he won.
