I hated the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Camera | Non-camera geek review - watch out DJI fan boys!

Are you a total camera geek? No? Then this video is for you!
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Vlog camera is meant to be a fantastic, easy to use, do-all camera and in my experiences with it, it just does not live up to the hype.
Yes, I've 'learned the camera'.
Yes, I've changed settings.
And simply saying "It's user error" misses the point.
You want an easy to use, point and click camera to film your life, but not BE your life. To capture what you're doing without getting in the way or being the focus of the event. Well, in my experience as an amateur film maker, this camera does not live up to the hype. In this video I'll tell you why I gave up with the DJI Pocket 3 and sold it on.

I'll tell you why I decided to abandon the DJI Pocket 3 and go back to using the GoPro Hero camera. I'll show you what I expected from the DJI Pocket 3 camera and how it performed. There's 4 key things that made me give up using the DJI Pocket 3 and return back to using my GoPro Hero 11 for travel and transport videos that I make on this channel.

You for sure aren't the only person who just wants to open the box and use the equipment right away so for those people, this review is perfect for them. If it saves those people the hassle of purchasing the pocket 3 and then taking it on a trip and it being too complicated for them to use, then your review has done it's job.

I can see that. I have the pocket 2 and it’s a bit more to get used to than GoPro. But over all, the pocket is typically way more convenient to use in a non action scenario. It’s just easier to hold and to film with than a GoPro.

I don't think you can blame the Pocket 3 for the usage issues - for example, looks like the "lagging" is because the wrong follow setting is being used (Slow v Fast Follow) and the wrong gimbal mode for showing the floor rather than the ceiling (Tilt Locked v Pan Follow), focus issued due to Continous focus being used (the default). Ie this behaviour will be expected if the wrong setting is used. Sorry, this probably sounds critical but I'm trying to be helpful!

there is NO doubt that conventional action cams like the GoPro Hero series and DJI Action cameras are far EASIER to use. point them at the thing you are filming and everything is always in focus near and far with an focus to infinity. your arm is the gimbal and stabilization is digital as long as you have good lighting. clearly you are right, he isn't familiar with a real mechanical gimbal which has all kinds of added complexity including the modes of movement the gimbal uses, the speeds, the focus systems of this camera (which can actually help produce the bokeh blur that makes this looks so much more cinematic than action cameras) and more. there are good videos here on KZbin that can teach you this and if one takes the time to learn I think the Pocket 3 is THE ideal travel camera for all but the most rugged or wet situations but no... it isn't as easy as an action camera and for some that's the deal breaker.

So for you to call this camera "crap", simply because you don't care to learn how to utilize something properly, is misleading to your audience and could rob them of just the thing they may be looking for. The Pocket 3 is probably the easiest camera for a beginner to pick up and learn and is the biggest bang for your buck. But your misleading and biased review doesn't explain that all because you wont watch 2-3 10-minute videos on how to use the camera properly. Hence why your videos get very little views - your footage looks horrible because its all clearly shot on auto settings. Because you wont learn how to use cameras properly. Yet this is supposed to be a travel vlog channel depicting the beauties and wonders of our world - with bad footage shot on auto settings lol. You sure you don't wanna watch 2-3 10 minute videos and upgrade your footage? Cause you have a pocket 3 now so you are more than capable of getting amazing footage if you actually learned how to use it. Go watch some sample footage of people using the Pocket 3 and capturing cinematic footage. Youll immediately want to learn how to utilize it properly and take your channel to the next level.

As all the other comments have mentioned, some of the issues mentioned in this video can easily be addressed from just learning how to use the camera. I think GoPros have their place, and so does the Pocket 3. I don't think 1 camera can do it all. Its all about using whatever tool you have to get the shot you need.

1) Its a gimbal. You seem to be comparing apples and oranges in this regard. Yes its not going to be as durable as a gopro. 2) There's the extender and extended battery to give you a better grip 3) When did the battery issues happen? Mine has been great so far 4) The movement issue is easily overcome with knowing how to use it 5) Its my go to for Night and indoor shooting now 6) Im still waiting for the perfect all around camera. For now Gopro for action and needing a more sturdy camera. Pocket 3 night time, indoors and for general use.

I bought the DJI Pocket 3 and am a long-time GoPro user. The ease of use is an issue, along with the stabilization of the footage when you are standing still - With no built-in stabilization for me, the DJI is better for walking and movement shots + at night time. I will end up using both cameras, based on the type of content I want to create.

I never had any issues with mine and even put it in my rucksack which went under my front seat on a British Airways flight to New Orleans and whilst there I didn’t even think about the fragility of the camera, I used the wrist strap . As regards to the speed of the movement I set mine to slow and chose the tilt lock and I was good to go. Spending time with the camera and getting used to it paid off for me.

The problems that he addressed in the video can be checked as user error and can be addressed with spending some time with the Pocket 3, but he does say that it is about ease of use for him. Think of this video much like how someone enjoys a Pop-tart straight from the box, sure you can eat it, and it does taste much better when toasted, but sometimes you don’t feel like getting the toaster out, waiting for it to toast and waiting for it to cool down.

I think this is just a case of having the right tool for the right person. I've never liked the footage coming off action cams, and my background is photography and film. So I'm used to having a lot more control over my image than you can typically achieve with a gopro, The DJI felt like a really simplified shooting experience for me because I'm used to cinema cameras (I don't even tend to shoot photos or videos on my phone very often because I don't like the image much) yes the lens on the DJI pocket focus breathes a bit, but to me that's acceptable for the type of quick run and gun vibe that it has; and I'd always take that over the fixed focus of an action cam. It's part of the look that I never liked. it seems like a lot of the problems you have with this camera come down to you not liking gimbals much. which is fair, there's a little bit of a learning curve to it. but i have to say that if you aren't willing to tap a screen twice to turn the gimbal speed to "fast" you probably aren't someone who wants to take the time to get better. (you do know that if you want to see something that's higher up you can just tilt the camera up a bit like any other camera though... right? I really don't think it's the camera's fault if you didn't point it at the thing you wanted to film) I get that this feels fragile compared to an action cam, they're designed to be rugged and basically survive being hit with a hammer... but I very rarely hit cameras with hammers if im honest. I don't find the screen to be flimsy when campared to a mirrorless camera, and the point that you think the gimbal is fragile is a 3mm thick piece of metal, it'll be fine. The connection between the gimbal and the body will definitely break before that thing will. I kinda like it, I quite like the image quality and It takes all of 3 seconds from me reaching into my jacket pocket to me being able to film something. that's as fast as i will ever need. even though some of your complaints have seemed a little silly to me, I get it. you're a different person with different priorites so this camera didn't feel fun to use for you. The truth is that there is no "one size fits all" best camera. So i'm glad that GoPro's exist (even though I'm not sure if I would use one even if it was literally the only option) they connect with some people and they enable people to make the things that they want to make. for me (so far) the pocket3 has been the best small form factor video camera I've ever used. I'd love it it it had a telephoto adapter or a zoom lens, and even though i'd probably never use it underwater, waterproofing would be cool.

If your priority is minimum friction between thought and recording, then something with a learning curve probably isn't for you and that's fine. If you can make the things you want to make with the tools you enjoy, more power to you

I get what you say about the gimbal cam pointing itself in unexpected directions and angles. I have the pocket 2. I had to "unlearn" the previously hard-won skill of shooting what I intend without monitoring a viewfinder. That's a skill I learned the hard way (and the expensive way) with point and shoot 8 mm film cameras a jillion years ago.

@@TravellingTourist I've brought a couple of pretty good cameras (and a gimbal) to England, from Toronto, in a cheap bag I bought at Walmart for $19 Canadian. That went inside my carry-on bag (with my clothes, socks and so on around it) as added protection. From my hotel, I would walk around Central London everyday with a camera (sometimes attached to a gimbal) inside the cheap bag. I've traveled with cameras like this for years, and never a problem.

I haven't experienced the issues you discussed. During the winter, I have been placing the P3 in my inner coat pocket with no issues and you can't even tell it's there. In addition, as you indicated yourself, the low light performance of the P3 performs far better in low light and, the battery performance is significantly better than the GP. With that said, I feel you should do what makes you happy and in this case, the GP11 is the camera for you. Good luck.

On the problem with taking corners, you're using the wrong setting. Put it to FPV mode for faster movement and this camera is more prosumer and needs to be used like that. I'm combining is with an Insta360 One X2 to have cinematic footage and low light from the pocket and the rest from the Insta360. So yes, this thing is not designed for very quick instant shots.

I agree that OP3 is not a "point and shoot" camera, the GoPro action cameras is much better suited for those that "don't know what they are doing" (by their own admission). Each camera has pros and cons for sure - the GoPro is certainly easy to use, with not having to worry about focus (infinite focus), good exposure control, great stablization. The Pocket 3 is a completely different beast - the gimbal modes are a different learning curve. When i started using gimbals, I was really confused with the gimbal modes - it takes a lot of time and patience to really understand how they work and how to use them properly. It's a completely different tool for different circumstances. ie it's not really point and shoot. I'm a camera-lunatic and have the GP12, Pocket 2+3, Ace Pro, Go3 and numerous DSLRs and each and every camera and is a godsend to some people, but a curse for others. I disagree that your channel is "doing badly", - to have nearly 1000 subs is very good, and well done! I wish I had that many! Good for you!

I am finding similar with the P3. I also have a GpH11 and 12. The Hero 12 uses less battery, much less. I also use the Volta handle which is handy. And of course both camera and handle can be bashed around and used in the rain no issue. 👍

Nice and challenging review. Good that you made it. I am a P3 fan. It's great camera. But thumbs up for you - you are the first KZbinr to identify a problem that I have also identified. With a P3 you can't manage to hold the camera really still (goes even better with the P2 I also own) and then take a video. The gimbal moves continuously. A regular well stabilized camera from Lumix does that much better: the GH5, 6 or the Panasonic G9II (a very good, underrated camera...i quit sony FF and went back to Pananasonic m43 in combination with a P3 and an action 4.....with that combination can handle just about anything).

You just didn't get how to use Pocket 3 properly. Learn some basics, i.e continuous and single focus difference. Also learn how to avoid strobe (that jerkiness appearing when panning horizontally). It's just you, not the camera. To my opinion OP3 is a GREAT tool, but for experienced users. It's definitely not a point and shoot camera. There's some learning curve, matey.

The focus issue is a pain in the balls but you can solve it by switching to showcase mode. I never use continuous always showcase. The gimbal lag is slow vs fast follow just change the setting.

The only thing you mentioned that would potentially sway me is that it is fragile. Everything else you said will be somewhat easy to combat with experience using it. I have used gimbals before and there are things to consider. I sold my GoPro 9 but still have my 10. I am aiming to have this and use my GoPro for anything that requires it's specific benefits

It’s not fragile. It’s as fragile as any other gimbal. The ‘weak’ point he mentions is made from 4mm thick aluminium. It’s probably the strongest part of the entire camera. I was super impressed by how solid it felt. Way stronger than I’d expected.

@@samebloke yeah maybe but you can keep the screen in portrait mode if you’re concerned and you can still film landscape. Any gimbal is fragile to a point. It’s no more delicate than any other small gimbal. I dropped my Osmo mobile gimbal once and it was knackered. You wouldn’t go off road motor biking with one of these. GoPro might be tougher but it’s not even the same thing. You either need a gimbal or you don’t. Both have their place.

@Pizza-Solutions Yes they are different tools but with the osmo pocket not being weather sealed I would need to use the GoPro and put up with digital stabilisation. My primary use for this will be walking tours. I currently use the GoPro on a chest mount. I can attach the Osmo pocket with the attachment and still have my hands free for photography

As the others say, this is a camera and gimbal, there is a lot of settings, it has it's uses & excels at some things, for other things a gopro is better, all depends on what you want or need 🙂

Fragility, totally agreed, issue 1, tilt lock and aim up via joystick ever so slightly and leave it there. , issue 2 is focus breathing and it is a distraction especially because the camera can produce a blurry background. Issue 3 has to do with the wide angle in relatively to how close the object is, that is the nature of optics not really the dji issue. The other not numbered issues are more of not being fully immersed with the tool, this is a semi advanced camera. I still have my GoPro’s, definitely more easier, intuitive, and natural to use, but the image quality isn’t close at all unfortunately. I would love to have a GoPro form factor with the pocket three sensor and that goes back to point 2 which is a pro as well, the ability to blur the background is just a bit nicer.

Yeah, I’ll have to agree. Stick with an Action Cam for you. I have none of those issues with my Pocket 3. Plus I’m color matching my pocket footage with my Panasonic S5 II pretty spot on. It’s definitely not an Action Camera. Our personal application and needs are everything.

Almost everything you said can be mitigated in the settings. Follow speed, tilt angle, keep horizontal orientation while screen is vertical.

I stopped using the Goprp because it never worked properly. Spent many hours with tech support and they could never figure it out either. I paid for the subscription service and I could not get the app to work either, again many more hours on with tech support to no avail. The final straw was when i wanted to browse some footage so I turned on the camera and was watching footage for about 5mins or so and the camera overheated and the battery bulged. The camera was cool to start, fresh battery also cool, indoors sitting in a/c being held in my hand.

My main issues with the camera was its not waterproof or even water resistant at all. It doesn't have swappable main battery. You are stuck with 1x and no optical zoom at all, just digital only. Even phones come with multiple optical zooms these days.. The 1 inch sensor is nice but it doesn't overcome the limitations for me. Mine was a gift but it would be going back if I had purchased it.

@@TravellingTourist main reason for looking for something other than gopro was the last 3 models having very little change and the 12 not having gps, i dont do anything hand held because of tremors in both arms so i mainly use the cameras car roof mounted for my street videos and backpack strap mounted for walking, the video i have done with the AP i noticed tiny bits of what looked like vibration, and found the lockable mount has a tiny bit of play in it, one single strip of thin tape on the bottom of the camera fixed it, hoping to do a Bath xmas night drive tonight to test it all. so, and the AP remote is the best remote i have seen so far.. but main reason for leaving gopro i suppose is paying for every new model and not seeing much difference from the 10 to 12

I was considering swapping me Insta360 X4 for the Pocket 3, since 99% of reviews talk about it having better quality (plus it has live streaming which Insta360 decided to remove from X3 to X4). Seeing these issues, not sure I want that headache.

I have both GoPro 12 and DJI pocket 3. While I understand the points you make about not being able to do certain things as you expect you can do on GoPro 11, the issues may not be what you think as others have commented here in your settings. The major difference between these two cameras IMO is the sensor. pocket 3 has the 1" sensor whereas the GoPro 11/12 has the rather small sensor (1/19") in comparison. The advantage of a small sensor is that the hyperfocal length is very short, hence it is very easy to achieve focus. However, bigger sensor provides more features such as smooth bokeh (for outstanding visual effect), which otherwise would be 'flat'. Also, bigger sensor is better suited for less than ideal lighting condition, such as inside a church etc. The osmo pocket 3 is not designed for under water use whereas the GoPro can be used for under water or rainy condition. OTOH, with the osmo pocket 3, you can easily remove and replace the microSD card without any hassle, which is not the case with GoPro. Just my 2-cents.

Nothing wrong with pocket three all your issues are easy to solve if you knew how to operate it and make the right settings. With that said ditch the GoPro and get the DJI action 4 because I have both and the action 4 will be right up your ally

I don't know if it's fair to blame the DJI Pocket for not knowing how to use it properly. Of course it's not as easy to use as a gopro, but if you know how to use it, the shots can look very cinematic. You can't do that with a gopo.

I love my OP3 and I take it with me every where BUT it struggles with focusing and it is not the matter of choosing the right one for the situation. AF C is really bad, unreliable. Hunting all the time. AF S is problematic when you try refocusing with the app. I published a short video on the topic few days ago. This weekend I was using only Action 4 for vloging because it was raining all the time. I thought I would not mind its fragility at the beginning but now I do. After encountering multiple defects, I've lost trust in DJI due to a pattern of launching low-quality initial products. The Osmo Action Three exemplifies DJI's history of flawed releases. While not everyone may share my experience, the camera had issues, such as overexposure when exposed to sunlight and unwanted movement in gimbal panning, as noted in your video.

The osmo can be mounted anywhere a GoPro can, backpack straps, handle bars, anywhere a suction cup can go, etc. like a GoPro though you must buy those attachments. The GoPro may be more durable and may be better for your uses but I honestly think the osmo pocket 3 is better due to the attachment market available, but I guess I still sort of look at GoPros like they’re only used for snowboarding footage and such while the osmo is more for vlogging

When I turn it on is the contrary. It tends to point upwards. I noticed that in the first osmo pocket. The white and clear parts of the image are blown and the sharpness and detail are not so much. The rest of the issues you said it. I prefer the osmo action cameras. Gopro for me is over. Many issues with gopros.

If you don't like gimbals and don't want to learn how they operate, the DJI is obviously not for you. As far as simplicty of use is concerned, smartphones cannot be beaten, and given we all carry a smartphone a phone+DJI combo gives you more much shooting capability and options than a phone+GoPro, in my opinion of course

Half of the issues are known before going in, and are related to gimbal and small size. To me its like buying a Tesla and then complaining about battery range concerns "Ya knew that going in!". 25% seem to be user error/familiarity and another 25% may be legit. The segment of not showing the ceiling.. how is the Osmo supposed to know the ceiling is beautiful? Do you expect it to read your mind? What would you do with a GoPro in that scenario? youd angle the camera up with your hands.. so why do you expect more from P3? It has a joystick so angle the camera up! The shakiness on still shots is interesting and i am still mentally digesting the focus... I guess you want a slower focus? (I have Pocket 1 and just ordered the Pocket 3, so take my comment with a "grain of salt" )

I am waiting for my DJI Pocket 3 and I have a Go Pro 10, a Sony a7C, Insta360 X3 and some other cameras, and the last thing on earth I'm interested in getting on video is 'myself'. Seeing your footage reminded me of what has happened when using some of my cameras (Sony RX100VA, the a7C I mentioned and a Lumix LX100) and the way the gimbals behaved. They were just as mysterious, temperamental, moody and obstreperous. I have a Zhiyun Crane M2 and a Weebill S gimbal. I hope you still have your Pocket 3, and will take your time trying to tame it, as I'm sure I will have to with mine. Regarding Go Pro, my Go Pro 10 is one of the sturdiest and most dependable little buggers I've ever owned!

Good choice to purchase the P3. It's a great thing. Of course with quirks and limitations. I myself am considering purchasing an X4 360 in addition to the P3. But I hesitate. It is popular because it fits our rather narcissistic era (putting yourself at the center of the world). That's notmy style: I make small educational documentaries (amateur I am) that the self and the self are not so important. The question then is does such a x4 add value?

I had similar experiences to you while learning to use the Pocket 3... but that's the key element here, you need to learn to use a gimbal and its not nearly as straight forward as pointing an action cam or smartphone. I won't argue that for some, maybe even most, the simplicity of an action cam is worth more than dealing with the complications of a gimbal based camera but many of the complaints you have do stem from a lack of understanding how to properly use the gimbal for what you are seeking to do.

Know what you mean. I had a Pocket 2 and could never get the damn thing pointing where I want it to! I think the P3 is better and you can also alter the gimble speed to suit. I am liking the footage a lot though and of course for low light/motion lapse it’s much better. Will stick with it as a walk around camera, but for action stuff, I’ve ditch the GoPro for the Insta360 Ace Pro. Just about superior in every way. And the lack of a replaceable lens cover doesn’t both me; been using action cams for over 20’years and have never broken/scratched a lens.

I’ve ditched my Hero 12 now completely (not just for the low light - I think the Ace Pro is just as rugged and is more versatile). The P3 is another notch up on the Ace Pro in low light as a result of the 1” sensor.

You issue 1 has to do with the frequency of our mains in Europe and your video framerate setting. Don’t set it to 25 fps in Europe, 24, 30, 60 are all fine. I know because I tested it. Both the root cause and the solution. And of course you did set shutter speed 1 over twice the fps. Or did you not?

Having owned both the pocket 2 and the pocket 3, I agree that the gimbal algorithm is a bit off on the P3. My P3 doesn’t recenter on its own correctly either. The P2 was much better.

Not an excuse but DJI is a famous for rushing hardware out before the software is fully ready. I would bet a firmware update comes soon enough to improve. they are a smart company but seems every product launch has some weird flaw to it that gets them beat up a bit and when the do resolve it... for many its too late as the review damage is done!
