Hey friend, I’m not Scott and this is almost a year after you asked this, but coming out is a very personal experience and heavily depends on what your situations like. No two “outings” are the same, and how and IF you want to come out to your family is up to you to decide. Since you don’t know how they would react, I’m assuming that LGBT topics aren’t talked about a whole lot in your household, and that leaves a risky coming out. In my opinion, super supportive families will probably have talked about it, and super horrible families will make their opinions *Very Clear*. If you want to gauge their opinions, you might want to start bringing LGBT topics and people up in conversation, talk about a show with queer characters or news on queer rights and see how they react. Do not come out if it’s unsafe for you to do so. An as for the how, it depends on what your relationship with them is like, and on just how you feel comfortable coming out. Maybe it’s as simple as “Mom, Dad, I’m gay”. Maybe it’s “here’s a PowerPoint presentation about what gender identity is and where I fall”. Maybe it’s a rainbow tiered cake, one of those cards that say “it’s a boy/girl!” to reveal that you’re trans, maybe it’s a joke about not parking straight. For me, I came out a bit slowly and unconventionally. I’m Asexual, so I started asking questions about how most people experience attraction, if my mom had crushes at my age cause I sure don’t, hinting about never wanting to get married or have kids, etc. It was helpful both to break the news slower so it wasn’t a shock that i wasn’t attracted to people, and to gauge their reactions. Ultimately what I did was start making black rings for my right middle finger out of wire, a subtle thing that went on for a year, then asking my mom if I could buy a real one. With my insistence on it being a plain black band, she naturally was curious as to why I wanted it, so in her searches she discovered it’s a symbol for asexuality. This was particularly helpful for me because asexuality is an “Invisible Orientation” which means a lot of people don’t know about it, and the last thing I wanted to do was try to explain it to her. It allowed her to do her own research instead of bombarding me with questions right away and come to her conclusions about asexuality on her own terms. Word of mouth explaining sexual orientation and the aroace spectrum is not a great thing, with nerves and memory and general miscommunication. Plus, it gave me an out if I really needed to: i didn’t send her a link to an information page about asexuality, i asked her for a black ring. That way, she called me downstairs, not to say “you’re asexual. explain,” but rather ask “do you want that specific ring for the traditional meaning behind it? Asexuality?” to which I could’ve retreated and made up another excuse if I felt unsafe.
