I'm in a similar situation and really resonated with this! I am a 26yo PhD candidate in a LCOL area with a prior savings rate of +50%. To lower my COL even further, I bought a affordable house and brought in some roommates to help cover the mortgage. I now allocate what’s left- after Roth IRA contributions-into a brokerage and HYSA. I'd love to hear more about the side hustles you’ve explored as a PhD student, Liam B!

No unless you're 1099.

Title is wrong - a PhD candidate doesn’t have a doctorate. It generally means they’ve passed their qualifying exams but haven’t completed or defended their thesis and don’t have their PhD. Also, announcing that you’re a PhD candidate is twerpy. Don’t do that.
