Potentially a lawsuit, this is more than just "creating and selling monster high fanart" If Rodney were just selling fanart of Draculaura and clearly labeled it as such, that would be a different story. Fanart often exists in a legal gray area. Technically, fanart is copyright infringement because the character belongs to Mattel, but companies like Mattel tend to turn a blind eye to small creators selling fanart-as long as it’s not being passed off as an official product or competing with their business. Essentially, companies usually won’t sue unless they think it’s hurting their brand or profits. Here’s the catch: by claiming he has a “doll business” Rodney isn’t presenting this as just fanart. He’s acting like it’s an original business and his own product line. That makes it much more serious. Mattel can absolutely argue that he’s crossing into commercial infringement territory because: He’s profiting off a character that looks like Draculaura. Fanart usually stays safer when it’s low-key and acknowledged as a tribute, not a business venture. By framing this as a "doll business" Rodney is implying he’s selling an original product, which competes with Mattel’s actual doll business. That’s a big no-no. It creates brand confusion. If people see Laura and think it’s somehow related to Monster High, that’s a trademark issue. Mattel can argue Rodney is using their character’s likeness to build his own brand, misleading customers and damaging Mattel’s reputation. He’s making himself a bigger target. By claiming this as "Series 1" and hyping it up as his own brand, Rodney has taken it from fanart to a full-blown commercial project. Mattel is far more likely to take legal action because it looks like he’s competing with their products, not just making art for fun. In short: selling fanart can sometimes slide under the radar if it’s small-scale and labeled clearly, but by framing it as a business Rodney’s put himself directly in Mattel’s crosshairs. They can easily claim he’s infringing on their copyright and trademarks to protect their brand.
