That myth about them defying the laws of physics is actually bogus. It was started by someone doing calculations on a napkin in a bar or something, and they were all wrong! Here is how it works: first, a bumble bee might look very fat, but it's really, really light as well. Most of the 'bulk' is fuzz and naturally, they are tiny creatures as well. They can lift over their own body weight in pollen (which is why they're so fuzzy - pollen sticks to them), although it does take a lot of energy to do so. A foraging bee is quite precarious in terms of needing energy. Plants developed nectar specifically to attract pollenating insects like bees, and nothing pollenates quite as well as bumble bees (bees in general are an evolutionary offshoot of wasps, basically wasps who decided they like sugar more than meat!). Bumbles have four wings each. Two sets on each side. Being paired up like that, they swish them back and forth from front to back, with a slight figure-8 motion (instead of up-and-down, as a bird might). This makes small vortexes of air pressure beneath the wings, which because they're so small and light, is enough to keep them afloat. Their movements seem really clumsy to us, but only because we're essentially watching them in fast-forward. If you watch some slow-motion footage of bumble bee flight, it's actually quite graceful. Because they need energy so vitally, they have scent glands on their feet. These rub off on the flowers they visit to let other bees know not to bother. The scent wears off at a similar time as the flower regains the nectar. If a bee wastes energy visiting a plant that's already drained, it's a real risk of deadly exhaustion.
