Hi! You have a worn head gasket. It allows the engine compression pass to the coolant system. You Can continue driving but have to check the coolant level very often. We drove our truck with the same failure from Ushuaia to Mexico. You just have to take care or the coolant leaking!

So wonderful of you at the beginning of the video to show us the scenery panorama with your face in the middle of the screen!

I had some issues with my defender td4 cooling system some time ago, loosing the liquid. It was just the cap which was not anymore waterproofed. My brother had a similar issue on his td5. It was the valve on the cap which was blocked. Changing the cap was solving the problem for us. But you have obviously air in your circuit. You have to evacuate it. On the td4, there is a scew in the highest position close to the valve of the cabin heating system. I don’t know for your engine. Landscapes are still very nice. Thank you for the video. Enjoy.

Looks like Land Rover coolant caps are not the best then... at this point I was evacuating the air several times per day. Basically every time I stopped the truck.

@@PipeDream.Adventures Then it can be a problem with the head gasket. ☹️ It is a bit heavier to repair.

Hate to say it but the Head Gasket could be leaking allowing exhaust gases into the coolant system and pushing fluid back into the reservoir? Pressurised Top Hose is also an indication? Hope not! Thanks for the content?
@PipeDream.Adventures
@PipeDream.Adventures 4 ай бұрын
Looks like it, yes. The top hose was not overly pressurized - probably because the faulty cap let most of the pressure escape...

Well it isn’t a massive job but it does require some time and some workshop manual access. Mostly the cost for this job is time? If you can get some time and space it’s something you could do yourself? Only real issue is the head and any resurfacing that’s required? You could run for a while ensuring coolant levels frequently but it needs sorting! Good luck man? Love your journey.

Also just a thought but is your Reservoir Cap original? I see the Reservoir is aftermarket but is the Cap original?

@@enduranceadventure8057 yes, it's not too difficult. These engines are easy to work on and I've already got all the parts, since I was prepared to do it in Utah, when I first thought the head gasket was blown (which it probably was, in hindsight). But it's still something I'd prefer not to do on a campsite in the middle of nowhere, if I can avoid it.

@@enduranceadventure8057 Yes, it's an original cap. The guys in the workshop in Salt Lake City gave it to me, when we installed the tank. But it was used (come from a Disco or Range Rover) and no idea how old it is.

Enjoying your journey and the challenges of travelling in a Defender. Years ago I had a Series IIA here in Ontario, Canada. I'm always curious as to your fuel consumption, L/100 Km.? Some say the Dempster Highway has 3 road conditions, dust, mud or snow, depending on the season. I keep thinking you had a air lock in the cooling system.

Glad you're liking it. Cool - What happened to your series? The fuel consumption is around 9.5-10L/100km (24-25mpg) - I think that's not too bad, considering the weight (~2.7t), the aerodynamic design of the Defender and the kind of roads I'm on. Yes, the system airlocks - hence no hot air from the heater. The question is, were is the air coming from, considering I was bleeding the system thoroughly at least twice per day, by that time. We will find out in about 2 videos. 🙃

@@PipeDream.Adventures We will be watching too see the fix for your cooling issues. The Series IIA was 12 years old when I got in 1984. It was short wheelbase 88 inch and a second vehicle. Family and Labrador Retrievers needed more room and comfort.

This is a really good example of why you shouldn't ship an antique British or European vehicle to North American for epic overland trips. Parts are a nightmare. You could just buy a Ranger or an F-150 in Halifax and go.

Not the most constructive criticism and you are very wrong. All vehicles require maintenance and this particular model is more than capable. Our World has shrunken to allow for the easy shipment of spare parts almost anywhere. He started with this vehicle and will continue thus! But thanks for your insight.

@enduranceadventure8057 well it's not really a criticism. Certainly not at this channel. I love Land Rovers and understand the difference between being visually interesting and practical. KZbin channels do better with interesting visuals and some adversity. I get it. This is just an observation that is true and obvious. The difference is a newish vehicle could make the 40,000 km journey with no break downs. The vehicle would have warranty for any rare issues. It would also have IFS with accurate steering and Roll Mitigation Control or Stability Control etc. that would likely have eliminated the crash. Thirdly all parts would likely be available in every town if you ever needed anything. Not to mention comfort and NVH. When you add the shipping to the maintenance, and the crash repair(s) it would have been much cheaper to buy a near new vehicle and sell it before you leave.

@@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 You're not wrong. There's pro's and con's to everything. A more modern vehicle would be more comfortable, potentially more reliable and definitely more safe. But then again I wouldn't know anything about it, and hence working on it myself would be more difficult (in case something broke) and the camper wouldn't be to my needs etc. In the end, part of the adventure is doing it in a shitty old car and dealing with the challenges that it brings. And the part situation is actually not too bad: You can spend the money and have parts shipped to most places in the US overnight from RoversNorth, or save some money and have the parts shipped in from the UK. Usually takes about 1 week to any major city in North America.

@@PipeDream.Adventures well; fixing stuff on the road is a bit of a pipe dream for most people anyway. When it comes to changing a tire or fixing brakes or maybe replacing a drive shaft the job's the same on a 25-year-old vehicle as it is on the new one. Nobody's fixing fuel injection on either vehicle without a shop. Nobody 's replacing an engine or a transmission on the side of the road either. The newer one will be easier to find a shop to fix it, and will be easier to find the parts in a junkyard. If you were driving a 2020 Tacoma or Ranger, you'd have 45 different lightweight camper systems to choose from. I'm sure one or more of them would be better than what you've got. This comes down to stubbornness. People pick what they want based on a perception that they have in their head and they're going to stick to that come heck or high water. Dan Grec did Africa in a new Jeep, with no issues, because nothing broke. Making the excuse that you can fly a party in from anywhere in the world in a week, is still a waste of a week. Planning to break down is not in my schedule.
