This was a thing in Runescape Classic where there was no 200m xp cap but the xp rollover still happened, except it happened at 536m to -536m xp there instead. One person did it with thieving, and then proceeded to thieve again to get all the way to positive again.

So XP is a 32-bit integer with one decimal fixed point, and that's how .5 drops from things like degriming are handled, and that's why a 200mil limit of all things... It all makes sense now

Another way to break the game would be an xp drop of over 2,147,483,647 if exp gains are limited to a 32-bit integer. You may end up with negative 2bil exp, or even break the servers.

thats what this was, xp is stored in .1 xp increments in osrs, its why it hit -214.7m.

Exp is actually calculated in 32-bit. It just uses a decimal instead. So he got over 214,7m exp in 1 tick which overflowed the counter and sent him back to negative. Hence why it's negative 214,7m exp. edit: i see you replied to yourself now, i didn't check replies first.

I just finished watching SoloMission going off on how bankers' note is taking over the hiscores and that the discussion is finally settled, and then I come here and hear that bankers note is dead and buried. I haven't even gotten to play yet, hoping to have some time over Christmas but I still have absolutely no idea which one is best!

If your goal is get a bunch of points and get to the end game quick and then play “like normal” fire sale is good. If you want the mid game to be a little slower, sometimes money might be tight if you’re not trickster/desert area but want to do a lot of bossing during the end game, bank note is better. Fire sale sounds fun mid game but falls off pretty hard because you don’t really need 100b as an Ironman

Theoretically, if the boost lasted long enough, he could have gotten a 414.7m xp drop to get back to 200m without going over again. This happened because his XP drop was more than 215m XP, so the game integer-overflowed his XP to -INT.MAX (Jagex tracks XP as tenths of XP, so the cap is technically one tenth of the gold cap, but they soft cap it at 200m to avoid int overflows like this)

fire sale is just like running a new account with a main giving it a bunch of money. i get it, it's super quick to get points and get to end game, but banker's note is just satisfying for not having to bank for basically any skill makes playing the game. i've thoroughly enjoyed it. only thing i regret is not going fairy's flight.

​@demon10205 Having unlimited cash is a big advantage for many skills and supplies, and the cumulative effect of getting points/relics/areas/ranks with it earlier is significant. The whole "fire sale is better early while bank note is gonna be amazing endgame" thing is kinda silly to me. Saving days worth of time in a gamemode that only lasts 8 weeks isn't solely an early game benefit just because most of the time save happens in the first few days. Needless to say both relics have massive perks, but I think bankers noters overexaggerate its ability to close the gap in the "late game." There are some compelling skilling methods using it, and it's good for a few pieces of pvm content, but realistically nobody is dying to bosses because they run out of food, they're dying to instakill mechanics. Last recall with 1800 total level and a crafting cape takes about 5 seconds to resupply your inventory and get back to bossing.

I don't know if this is obvious, but this is similar to max cash being ~2.1B. They seem to use at most 32 bit long integers. Signed integers can be negative 2^31 up to positive 2^31 - 1. Neither Xp nor gold should ever be negative though. You may wonder if they could have used an unsigned integer which could be from 0 to 2^32 (~4.2B). Historicaly runescape was written in Java which does not have unsigned integers. Evidently XP has a hidden decimal point so 214m XP takes as many bits as 2.14B. The final piece is how programming languages handle integer overflow. Different languages choose to do different things; Java jumps from max value to min value.

i think the question more is how did he get the game to produce an integer stack overflow, since jagex has many built in limits to cap you at 200m xp to prevent this very situation. my guess is some element of the leagues code was ran through quickly and they didnt bother making that 200m limit work for every new and unique situation that can happen as a result of the relics. so he somehow managed to hit that unique combination of xp gained and current level and relics to completely break the game haha

To programmers, it's obvious that XP is tracked as tenths of XP, so the cap is 214m and they soft cap at 200m to prevent int-overflow, and this massive XP drop just overwhelmed the system because it wasn't designed for that. To the average person who might think 2.14B is an arbitrary number instead of the max value of a signed 32 bit integer, it's not obvious at all what happened there.

@@ryangross5446 I'm guessing that because the XP drop itself was over int-cap, the soft-cap restriction for 200m didn't get applied (XP + XP_Drop >= INT.MAX == FALSE because it overflowed to a negative number), and this edge case was never planned for because it's so absurdly unlikely in normal gameplay, so the total XP overflowed with the over-cap XP drop.

An XP drop bigger than the integer cap number, and it skips the check for fake XP as it happens at once (so it has to try and apply the XP drop). And that then hits the integer cap and overflows like you witnessed.

Bankers note is something new and special, it'll have uses we can't even imagine yet .. Also makes all bank standing skills trainable on the go This leagues would be good to go for all pets, bankers note, you don't ever need to leave the boss

no, the thing that broke the game was him getting too much exp at once and no failsafe being available to prevent the calculation going negative. so you'd need to hit something like 500million dmg at once for the defense exp drop to be too large and going over.

Game breaks at around 490m xp in a skill a guy did it in classic years ago by botting 2 years straight on thriving to test what the actual max xp was as there was no 200m limit in classic, what he found was after around 490m xp the xo starts to under flow so will start going backwards from 490m xp back to 0 I’m guessing the fact you probably broke 1bill xp in 1 game tic broke the game so much it bypassed the under flow and out you straight to -214m xp
