I'm not sure. The way I understood it was him seeing more potential for a better future with armin, since erwin was a devil for a rather selfish goal that didnt go beyond the basement. Armins goals went beyond the world they know, expanding his horizon with the people he holds dear

For me, the thing is if you love Erwin, you respect his decisions, and he gave the responsibility to Levi to make the choice. He trusted Levi implicitly and I'm sure he'd accept whatever Levi chose, even if we don't. Erwin was a gambler and he'd appreciate Levi's gamble on Armin.

I really like Armin, but choosing him was the wrong choice, and season 4 proved it. Erwin was might’ve been not the most brilliant strategist and with the smartest plan, but he had something that they would need desperately in season 4: a strong leadership and the tact to deal problems that go beyond the battlefield. If Erwin was still alive, things would’ve happened the way they did in season 4. Neither Hange nor Armin were suitable to replace him.

Erwin's final charge is easily my favorite scene in this whole anime. His monologue about his fallen comrades watching Levi and Erwin is PEAK character arc. But the thing that always gets me is his hand smacking the injection away and the flashback to the classroom with his father. Levi's memory of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin talking is when Levi realizes Erwin has given up on his dream. He made his peace, and Armin's dream is essentially the same thing. The search for the sea is a metaphor for the search for truth, knowledge, and discovery. Erwin Is THE GOAT.

I'd argue that Erwin's and Armin's dream weren't the same. Erwin only desired to discover the truth in the basement and had no vision what will come afterwards. We have no idea if Erwin would have the same drive to move forward if he achieved his dream. No, that's not the same thing. Armin is curious. But Erwin is not curious. His goal is to prove something not to satisfy his curiosity. Erwin want to prove his father's theory about the outside world was true. It's about ego and it's selfish. Armin's dream is open to everything, it's just the will to discover new things. So the reason why it has to be armin is Armins plans don’t involve people sacrificing themselves like Erwin’s does Almost every plan Erwin has he is losing soldiers left and right. And the biggest reason of all is Erwin’s dreams stop at the basement. Armins dream to reach the sea goes beyond the walls. Erwin didn’t see the basement but his character was done once they got to shiganshina. Armins character story didn’t end.

Armin being chosen never meant he was replacing Erwin. That’s just a fan theory. They are 2 separate people. Erwin’s sacrifice doesn’t need to accent armins entire being. It’s just the events that took place.if you really want to discuss what importance these characters have in season 4 then please tell me what hange does as commander in S4 that’s so special. Like bruh he literally got levi on their team, he changed the government, knew there were traitors ( this is why the first operation was to capture the female titan who have mot even appear before that) Armin was just in the focus because simply he is near Eren. And yes when you actually make the commander die in order to save someone else you would expect to replace him but since season 4 starts Armin was just talking nonsense and had 0 plan or fcks what was going around. If a hero is a person who ready to sacrifice himself for a victory, then pretty much everyone was a hero in this episode. Armin - he obviously was, plus he gave up on his dream Erwin - he obviously was, plus he gave up on his dream Levy - well he used entire line of titans as natural wall to get to defeat Beast Titan, that turned out not sacrificial only because he's too good, but otherwise he was ready to sacrifice himself to let others retreat and that was his initial plan Everyone rushing with Erwin - their death was required for the plan to get to Beast Titan and instead of trying to retreat, they also accepted death Moblit - he sacrificed himself to save Hange throwing her into well Mikasa - «Even so, I have to do it», she was ready to open Armored mouth with the single thunder spear that is left, and then, if you think about it - there was literally no other way of her «having to do it» otherwise than to try to slice Reiner from the inside mouth using blades... so she also was ready to take this sacrificial-type of a risk, too

Of course It was shown that Reiner seemed to be the least talented among the candidates and if it weren't for Marcel's influence the chances were that Reiner probably wouldn't be chosen, but personally I think that his brute strength and endurance make him suits better the power of the armored titan (Porco seems like the guy who would be better suited to a titan that has more mobility and speed, since he and marcel stood out for their speed/agility).

I believe the whole point of this was that there is no right answer. You just have to chose and keep moving on. Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn't. It's a big theme in the series through these first seasons especially concerning Levi

The decision is so well physically represented, too: Erwin wants to go down into the dark, damp hole in the ground. He's ashamed to admit it to Levi. Even as he's dying, his head is in the past, racked with guilt for asking the question that got his father-and eventually so many of his comrades-killed. Armin wants to go forward, out, past the walls and into the huge world outside of them. He tells his friends this with wonder and joy in his voice. When he is dying, he isn't thinking about how he was tempted to abandon the mission and seek out his own dream-he fully entrusted it to Eren. The choice is just so obvious from a storytelling and literary perspective! It's crazy to me that so many people even think it's a real debate.

On the moment it would have made sense to save Erwin, but as Livai said, he had to give up his humanity to become who he was and deserved to finally have his peace, especially because he said he didn't know what he would do once he got to the basement. Armin's tactical success rate was way higher. And he always tried to plan with his people's safety in mind. Erwin had the smarts but never hesitated to sacrifice his own soldiers for the greater good and just as often as not, his plans came a step short of success. I never doubted for a second Armin was the right choice. 😊

Let's not forget the extra complicated plan Erwin put in place to find out who the moles in the survey corps were. A plan, let it be know, in motion since the female titan arc and the whole formation for the expedition, that was the center piece of the plan, with Eren position being kept secret being a bait. There are some videos to explain it better than me, but that was such an intricate plan... Erwin was a mastermind when it came to these kind of things. Tho I won't take away everything Armin did. Edit: My mistake, the plan was in motion since the survey corp graduation, since season 1.

Your opinions at the end aren't that controversial tbh. I think many people liked Erwin more at this point in the story, myself included back when I watched it in 2019. Armin was by no means my least favorite but I didn't love him as much as I loved Erwin back then (Myself as well as many others were kinda blindsided to the pretty despicable things he has done as a commander). Even so I think it made sense for Armin to be brought back, Levi's reasoning made sense for his character and Erwin had a beautiful conclusion to his arc. It'll be interesting to see whether you will come to love Armin more in the future, because there is quite a noticeable divide between the fandom about Armin. I personally have come to absolutely love him and what he represents in the show (He's easily my top 3 now). "Abandoning your humanity to defeat the monsters" is something that was brought up again and again in the show, and it was first said by Armin in season 1 when describing Erwin, and he has repeated it a few times since. We'll see how this affects him and the others moving forward

While I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Commander Erwin for his strength, leadership and insane ideas that actually work. I think Armin was the right choice to go with becoming a Titan, he does lack as much experience as Erwin for sure but he's also only like 20. I'm guessing when Erwin was 20 he lacked experience like Armin does. Armin shows much promise in the crazy ideas he comes up with and his deductive skills. He actually makes me think that's how Erwin thought probably when he was young like Armin he probably had dreams of his own as well and as times went on he forgot about those dreams because of how heavy things get with the Titans around.. I LOVE Erwin and was devastated when he passed away but I don't think he would have been happy living as a Titan shifter. Love your channels Vicky! Can't wait to see more Attack on Titan 😁

Erwin was for me always the best choice. This is the saddest happening to me among all fiction I've read/watched. And this is mostly because I knew it was obvious even AoT would keep que main characters for more time. BUT the scene of Erwin thanking Levi is a great part of the show, because is where Levi could see he had given away the height on his shoulders to face the beast. Erwin was finally free. And freedom has always been the main theme of Attack on Titan.

He was alive because only his skin was burned, people die in these situations because they can't exchange heat, so they overheat or their lungs get burned too and they can't breathe, but it is possible to be alive for some time after something like that. I'm not sure how much, I suppose his lungs were fine but I don't know how to explain overheat, this could have happened in Autumn or Winter maybe?

Kenny told Levi that people need something that drives them. Erwin was about to reach his life goal. Maybe he also considered that once he would do so, he wouldnt be that same Erwin anymore, and thus not of as great use for hunanity. Armin is fresh. He has a drive, and a motive. All on-top of beeing brilliant. You can argue from both sides about this, there is no right or wrong decision in the end.

From a writing perspective, it made sense for Erwin’s character to die here. Also, what I feel like a lot of people miss is that these two sides of the battle reflected Erwin and Armin’s strengths and weaknesses (Armin’s brains but his lack of confidence, Erwin’s leadership but also his selfishness). In the end, Erwin couldn’t beat the Beast Titan, but Armin could topple the colossal

The reason why Levi chose Armin over Erwin: "Everyone has to be drunk on something to keep going." -Kenny Ackermann. Erwin's dream was to find out what was in the basement, find out the truth about Titans and the world, and to prove his father was right. Armin's dream was to see the world. Once they reach the basement, Erwin's dream is over. There is nothing to keep him going after that. However, Armin's dream goes beyond that. That is why Levi chose Armin.

The problem with Erwin is that once he learned the truth, he would lose his motivation to fight. The guilt of everything he had done to reach the basement had already begun to hit him. His facade had begun to crack. His one and only driving force was to uncover the truth. Once he did that, his sole reason to fight would be exhausted and the only thing left for him would be the guilt of sacrificing so many people to reach his dream. But Armin has a much more far-reaching dream. His dream of reaching the sea is really a metaphor for his unending pursuit of knowledge. No matter what happens, there will always be something beyond the sea for him to keep reaching for, and therefore he will never run out of reasons to fight and keeping going. Ultimately, I think this is why Levi decided to revive Armin and let Erwin rest in peace. Levi learned from Kenny that everyone has to be drunk on something to keep going. Erwin was about to run out of his reason, whereas Armin is just getting started.

We'll never know what would have happened if Erwin had been chosen instead. If we're speculating, I think Erwin would have been the wrong choice. I don't think after learning the truth Erwin would be motivated enough (not to mention personally connected enough) to move forwards the way Hange did. And this is what I feel is an often overlooked point: HANGE was Erwin's replacement, not Armin. HANGE decided to keep scouting beyond the basement. Why would Erwin do that? Armin performed most of his achievements and feats as a regular soldier, not as a person in charge.

Many of us couldn’t have enough compassion for the “bad guys”, and didn’t bother to imagine what’s going on with them, which is one of the main theme of the show. Levi didn't choose for Armin to live, he chose for Erwin to die. Everyone was a slave to something, and Erwin was about to lose that something, proving his father's theory. No matter the answer that's in the basement, once he'd have seen it, Erwin would only be left with the countless people he sacrificed chasing his dream. Levi chose to let him rest in peace instead.

Im definitely curious to see how you handle season 4, and if it changes some of your opinions. Things are about to get a whole heck of a lot crazier. (On a side note, believe it or not, a lot of people like the notorious "duck bill" or "cart" titan) I think Erwin didn't give himself enough credit. He certainly gambled with people's lives, but he was also very up front about how dangerous the scouts were and how many people would die, and he was willing to sacrifice himself in the end. You're actually not crazy. A lot of people wanted Erwin to be chosen. I myself was conflicted. Whether Levi made the right choice or not, I think he made the most moral one by letting Erwin pass on.

Well erwin is an important leader, to keep everyone united and stay focused on one vision erwin is needed, with the loss of a strong charismatic leader like erwin, you will see the impact yourself in season 4 later. The series can't really be without Armin... and I don't mean after this moment/the future, I mean the series up until this point. He's been pretty integral to the story. I think a preference between Armin and Erwin is fine - the fandom is full of it - but a major dilemma of having to make the choice is just how impossible it is. There will be a huge loss either way, and I don't think Armin's accomplishments should be discounted.

The choice wasn't impossible for the reasons you mentioned. In fact Levi was almost certain to go with Erwin, but he decided last minute to let him rest after getting reminded that Erwin went through all this hell and finally was in peace with dying. Erwin's accomplishments overall are nowhere near those of Erwin's and at this point of the story, Erwin by a utilitarian view was a better choice. Also she never said she disliked Armin, she said she was her least favorite character.

Armin was the best choice Erwin was an amazing strategist but he had no further life in him, all he cared about was proving his dad right, to see the basement. That's all. It's why the show hammered home the point of Levi asking what he was gonna do after it was all over, and Erwin kept saying he doesn't know, that all he wanted was to see the basement Levi made the choice to save someone who still wanted a future, who still had dreams and hopes, who still had some positivity in him. Levi also made the choice specifically to let Shinganshina be the place Erwin dies I like Erwin, I would've loved seeing him alive for sure, but Armin has proved himself over and over. He called Hannes to save Eren and Mikasa, he came up with the plan for the boulder, he came up with the idea that Annie was the Female Titan (and did so during being out in the field, it's why he said he wanted to relay a message to Erwin during that mission with the forest of tall tress), he came up with Reiner's hiding place, he came up with a plan to beat the Colossal Titan at the expense of his own life It's absolutely fair you don't like the guy, that's fine, I don't think he's the strongest character either in the earlier seasons, but I do think it's important to stay objective

I personally think Levi did what he did MAINLY out of mercy for his friend and commander. Of course he saved a very valuable one either way, but I believe his real intention was to give Erwin the deserved rest. And Erwin made quite clear what he wanted, slapping away the syringe. So maybe it was the worst decision for humanity, but it was the most human one.

The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Levi wanted to show mercy to his friend and commander, but in order to do that he had to make sure the person chosen was worth it. And Armin was - not Erwin's replacement, but capable.
