Piss poor, probably links to "They don't have a pot to piss in." Before indoor bathrooms, a pot was used so they didn't have to go outside to the outhouse in the winter. Not everybody could afford that 'Special pot'.

Thanks. By the way, that's where the term 'water closet' came from. They kept the pot in a closet, so the user could have privacy, then later added a drain and a gravity fed water tank up high with a pull chain, to flush. The first indoor toilet was born. Later a sink was added in case the Sears catalog page ripped...

The chemicals in urine are used to make saltpetre, a compound used to make black powder. “Naked as a jay bird”. Well this is the U.S. version of the English “naked as a Robin”. In answer to piss poor! People used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery.......if you had to do this to survive you were "Piss Poor". But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot......they "didn't have a pot to piss in" & were the lowest of the low.
