When Baby one more time came out she was the only female solo teen pop artist, before she signed Jive records they wanted her to be a part of a girl group because nobody believed a solo girl could have a success anymore with all those boy bands and girl groups being popular. But she did it, and started a whole new era of new female singers (Christina, JLo, Jessica Simpson, Pink, Mandy Moore, and later Shakira, Avril, Beyonce etc.)

The Baby one more time music video is influential because prior to it there was nothing like it and it was entirely Britney's idea. The music executives were pushing Britney for an animated music video with a theme she wasn't into at all. She felt that if she had gone that route everyone would have thought she was a joke. If she had listened you might have watched a completely different video and she might not have had the career she did

It's so sad because she had no other choice. Her family was extremely poor and had suffered from bankruptcy and her label signed a deal where they could drop her within 90 days so she had to basically comply with everything they told her there was no "I don't wanna sing like this" and then they turned her amazing deep voice into that croaky soprano-soubrette voice...

And it was huge. Not only in the US. I'm from Moscow, Russia and, believe me, Britney's songs were all over the place. I'm still a big fan of her debut album. I think it's her best one vocally. Baby One More Time was considered one of the most influential pop songs for a lot of reasons: 1. Her timing, she kind of brought pop back to life after it was kind of dead. 2. She was a young 16-year-old girl with her theme being a schoolgirl in high school (she picked herself). A lot of people can relate to her in the video, we all even can today. We all go to high school and it was just the fact that it was so relatable. 3. She had some good moves and a decent singing voice, the whole package pretty much. Finally, Britney was supposed to be in a girl band first, called Innosense but decided to try to do it solo. She was like the only pop star to go solo and actually become successful by doing so, remember this was the time that girl and boy bands dominated..So those are the reasons I believe it's definitely one of the best of all time.

Love this album can’t wait for part 2! The remixes are a skip unless you’re into that kind of thing. Her sophomore album Oops I Did It Again turns 20 this week. You should do that album next! ❤️ Also, she was huge at that time imo because she was the first (and best 😉) teen-pop solo female artist to come out at the time and set the standard of the modern global pop star. Even though teen-pop was already gaining popularity, there were only boy bands and girl groups. The world was ready to embrace their Princess of Pop and she delivered 👸🏼

what's funny about the tying the shirt up was that originally it wasn't meant to be tied up. They actually shot her with the shirt tucked into her skirt but after many takes, Britney was getting uncomfortable as the flaps kept getting undone when she was lifting her arms up and it made her can't dance full out as she wanted to so she decided to tie it up. You can see some shots she has her shirt tucked. I don't think she thought much of it other than practical reasons. Though it did made the director panic as it would ruin continuity of the shots but they made it work.

Many times you answered your own questions or made observations that also answered your questions :) She became influential and the main proponent behind pop music because of her image, the sound of her music, and her star quality. She embodied a girl next door image while simultaneously either dancing suggestively at times and/or wearing clothes a certain way. Her music was mainly, if not all, produced by Max Martin (he has an immense resume of hits now). So the sound will remain pretty cohesive throughout the next two-maybe 3 albums. Her performance quality was that of a Janet descendent. Style of dance being Jazz Funk mixed with her background in gymnastics and technical training a la (ballet, jazz, tap). Which in turn answers the fact her videos became the forefront bc there hadn't been an artist to tap into that kind of mass appeal with those type of skills since maybe Madonna (she trained as well). Dance heavy music videos started with artists like Michael, Janet, Madonna, Paula Abdul, etc. So she was the result of the next generation and none of her contemporaries were able to be on that level. She was fierce to put it in other words.

Remember they were both in the MMC together so probably she did admire Xtina’s dark approach in some of the songs they used to sing together. Xtina already had a dark tone even in the MMC.
@allanmhanson4 жыл бұрын
Britney’s original singing style was that dark chest tone, the label changed her to a more light head voice to difference her from Christina, and also because they thought those hard vocals weren’t comercial enough. That’s the story behind Brit Brit. She still plays with her chest voice every now and then in every album, but the main thing is to always evolve her head voice style, her dark tone remains the same and I love it 😍

I was fairly young when Baby One More Time came out BUT I remember it being considered EXTREMELY sexual for what was happening in pop music. Only Madonna and Janet were really pushing boundaries but in turn they were being blacklisted by radio and TV - Britney, however, was EVERYWHERE. On top of the sexualized image, Britney was only 16-17 years old during the time this was filmed and released. The school girl fantasy was considered a taboo, "pervy" thing that was only done in adult films. No one her age was doing that sound OR those types of visuals at such a young age. Overnight she became famous in almost every age bracket. The young girls wanted to be her, the young gays (like myself) were drawn to her stage presence/theatrics, and straight men wanted to.... get in her pants, for lack of a better expression. Meanwhile she was being promoted by Disney - from concerts to music videos to awards show appearances - and a lot of parents weren't happy about her midriff bearing outfits, "sexualized" dance moves, and the lyrical content of her pop bangers. I spent most of my childhood sneaking Britney Spears CDs into the house because my parents were NOT WITH MISS BRITNEY JEAN SPEARS AND THE SERVES SHE GAVE US. Also the man on background vocals during Sometimes is a guy named Anders von Hoffsten, I believe he did background vocals on a few early 00s songs that Max Martin produced. Hopefully that answers some questions about the impact and maybe a little insight on the early years of being a Britney stan!

Music in the 90's had split more obviously into specific genres than ever before, so you fell into categories such as rock, hip hop, dance etc. By the end of the era, the only acts that were really putting out pure pop music were bands; as they had more guaranteed appeal to their young demographic. Pop music was on a total decline and not seen as cool anymore. Even the big pop titans, such as Madonna etc were distancing themselves from traditional, mainstream pop sounds. Britney tore up the theory that pop was dead and Baby One More Time was just the perfect formula that came at exactly the right time. There was a massive gap in the market and she ticked every box. Her sexy girl next door image, the strength and quality of her material, her instantly distinctive and memorable voice, her dancing felt different and exciting. She just had 'it'; star power, the 'x factor'. I think Britney just personifies the 'American dream' and that resonated with people worldwide. I've never seen such immediate impact and a level of interest in any artist since. Your videos are so great because you go into so much detail, so when I saw you had reviewed Britney, I was a bit worried. But I love that you can pick out all of the little qualities in Britney's work that most people tend to overlook and dismiss. Thank you for reading my dissertation! 😂

the main producer on the first two britney albums (baby and oops, & he also did a few songs on her 3rd album, britney) is max martin, along with his team of fellow producers at a place called cheiron studios in sweden. these guys also produced the backstreet boys and nsync hit songs of that era. since that time max has become one of the most successful producers/writers of all time after george martin and paul mccartney. after the teen pop wave, he worked with kelly clarkson, pink, katy perry (and produced her biggest hits), kesha, britney again for femme fetale, taylor swift when she went pop, ariana grande, the weeknd, and many more. he literally has shaped modern day pop. max is very much focused on melodies, and has a particularly notable style where the final choruses after the bridge have an a and b variation, which in the final chorus will be played on top of each other (complimentary choruses). sorry this is comment is a novel, but regarding why the bomt video is considered influential, it is because it ushered in a new era of pop. the music of the 90s up to this point was a mix of grunge rock, r&b, and and vocal divas (whitney, celine, mariah, etc). britney was the first in a while to bring back the janet style choreography. after her debut, every record label tried to create their own britney, but none of them ever really matched her star power. what was incredibly special about britney was her stage presence. that and the fact that her team marketed her to high heaven to the point where she defined pop culture from 1999-2002 (and of course later on once tabloid culture/paparazzi took off). also all of the controversy about her being so young (16 at the time of bomt) and provocative.

You asked about the video: She was 16 and dressing like that in the mid 90's it was very controversial. Also no one her age was out dancing or singing like her. She invented the 90s teen pop star. Before Britney it was only Boy bands and RnB stars like Brandy, Monica etc. Pop wasn't very big but Britney and specifically this first album influenced the craze of 'bubble gum 90s pop' the writers produced songs for NSYNC and Backstreet boys too as well as with Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson etc. It was a massive movement. Britney was also the ' all american girl next door' with talent of Janet Jackson, camera presence of Madonna, Charismatic charm of Mariah in interviews and she looked up to all those legends. it was a very 90s POP movement that Britney really was the ICON of. Baby one more time blew up - then Crazy STOP remix ( ft Melissa Joan hArt - in Sabrina teenage witch in the video) then Sometimes then all her Malls across America tours.... Britney blew up and was a massive movement. It was an amazing time to be a teenager in tbh hahaaha. I loved hearing Britney and watching her live performances. She had so much confidence and charisma back then that was electric and came into her live performance. We have to remember....she was 16! Lets remember Britney had 4 Albums debut at #1 on Billboard as well as world tours AND a motion Picture by the time she was 21! Britney came first and that dark sound is her natural tone before she started tweaking her sound.

Anyway, I think they did the wrong move, BTMYH should've been a US single too, in fact it reached #1 on the Worldwide charts because it did so well across all of Europe, which is quite remarkable for a song to reach #1 in the WW charts without getting a US release. Britney was 15 during Baby One More Time video, her school girl outfit was too sexy for her age and at that time. After the video, a Rolling Stone Magazine cover was released with britney laying in bed with bra and panties. This album was released before Christina Aguilera became a singer.

Im an Xtina fan but my favourite album of Britney r Oops I Did It Again and In The Zone... Can u react to it... And also E=MC2 (deluxe version) by Mariah & All For You by Janet Jackson... Fan from the Philippines..

Fun fact.... they created the Britney "baby voice" because Britney and Christina sounded too similar. If you look back at childhood videos of Britney...her register is actually pretty low and she has a fuller voice. They pitched her ridiculously because she became famous for the baby voice.

The original version is in her third studio album called ”britney” but the dark child remix is in the ” greatest hits; my prerogative” album

Most definitely! The only reason why I haven’t done it yet is because I am not sure how they would perform on my channel. But I am pretty sure I have stated before in a video that she is one of my top two vocal inspirations.

It wasn’t particularly her, it was a big change in the entire music scene from rock/grunge to pop. She definitely helped kick it off though

I never figured out why they choose "Sometimes" as a second single.....I love that song but such a bad choice for a follow up after "...baby one more time"
