If there’s one thing ingrained in my brain for life it’s Emmie’s 1 star review for The Kingdom of Little Wounds🤣

Angelfall for sure holds up. One of my favorite series even though I didn't finish it for years (I thought the first book was the only book 😬)

the storied life of aj fikry is one of my favourite books 💗 it's definitely a slower book-there isn't much to the plot. you're really just following AJ Fikry in his life through the years

I loved the Captive Prince series and I'm really glad I trusted that the uncomfortable elements would be dealt with properly, because they were! There are bad parts of each of the leads' cultures, but the book doesn't condone them and the romance isn't gross.

Ember in the Ashes is one of my favorite series. I'd highly recommend trying it out. Worst case you hate it and you can get rid of the series but best case you find a new YA series to love. 🙂

The Chestnut Man is one of my favorites. It's worth the read. So dark but so well paced.

I will defend the Captive Prince series til the day I die, and anyone who reads it in its entirety and still just calls it a slave/owner romance clearly has ignored all the themes in it, because the series is (as many fantasy series are) about gaining power to dismantle the corrupt political system in a country (in this case in order to dismantle the system of slavery and rape culture). The romance is not prevalent until the second book, and the characters in the series have their own goals, some of which are larger than they themselves, and achieving them leads them to commit some horrible things because that's how political scheming works. If morally grey characters are not your thing then this is not the series for you, but it grinds my gears when people label the whole series as Problematic™️ just because they can't comprehend problematic themes being discussed in a way that does not endorse those things. Rape and slavery are present in the books because they are a part of the country's culture, but if critical thinking is employed you'll notice those things are not endorsed or glorified (this becomes especially apparent in later books once you get to know the characters beyond what they show on the surface).

Angelfall is still fun for me tbh so I think you can read it if you want to read addictive fun book. Also, I love an ember in the ashes and I think even if you don't like the series, the first 2 books will still be good.

An Ember in the Ashes is an amazing series! So brutal and twisty! Unfortunately Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea has a gorgeous cover and interesting description, but I thought the story was terrible and a huge missed opportunity. It’s very Twilight-esque

Ahhhh!! The Kingdom of Little Wounds. I really loved that one, and no one besides the bookseller who sold it to me (like 6 years ago?) has mentioned it. It's about raging syphilis if I remember correctly 🤣Also, it's just one of the most stunning books. Looking forward to your thoughts if you pick it up!

To agree with half of the comments, An Ember In The Ashes is a series that I think definitely holds up. I just finished the final book last year and I really enjoyed my reading experience. The only other book on your list that I have any experience with is Rebel in the Sands. I read about 10% of it last year and decided it was a bit too young YA for what I currently read. I didn't find anything wrong with it but it was just a book that wasn't for me. Best of luck with your reading!

I flew through the Captive Prince series when I read it years ago. I'm not sure it would hold now if I re-read it but I did enjoy it a lot and was attached to the character. It is explicit. And trigger warnings for rape and child abuse. I also had a great time with Angelfall but it is many years since I read it. So again not sure how it holds up nowadays. I read the rest of the series years after Angelfall so I think it can be read as an entertaining story in its own right.
