Octopath Traveler has been out for a week now and it seems like everyone has been playing this game like crazy. We will be doing a full review of the game after we get through this game completely, but for now I wanted to share some of my impressions so far of the game while I spend some time grinding a few levels. Let me know what you think about Octopath Traveler so far as well in the comments!

It's hard to find someone who gives decent content as yourself do! Why THE HELL you say NO SPOILERS and then you mention about the end of a games story... at 13:30 . Im really enjoying this game, and i like to hear your opinion about it ... not to be a SPOILER! !!!! Continue to grow, don't settle with common with this rookies mistakes... it just affect your credibility.

Eh....4 chapters? Hm, for some reason I thought there was only 3 per character... Damn, I still have to complete chapter 2 with 2 characters and I'm 50 hours into the game XD And I'm sure there is also some high level end game content. So I guess at least 100 hours in total.

I pre-ordered the limited edition version of the game when I first saw the reveal trailer. When I finally played the demo on the switch, I attempted to get past the timer because the demo captivated me just that much. Once I received the game, I played it hours on end with "Primrose" as my main cause I'm an avid dancer/martial artist and I enjoy the idea of being a seductress to men ^_^. After beating the game with all the characters and leveling them all up to 80 and them some, I completed all the side quests, unlocked all the divine skills and then fought and destroyed Galdera the true secret boss after a 1 hour and 20 minute battle. This was by far best fight I had with a "hidden true boss" of any rpg in a while. The Battle music alone for the divine skills were epic and the boss battle music with Galdera was on a level similar to that of Parasite Eve's final secret boss in the Chrysler building in the EX game. I was hurt and sadden as a fan when this game won no awards at the american Video game awards and instead "Red Dead Redemption" took almost everything. The Japanese are masters at telling a captivating and soulful tugging story. To call this game a masterpiece is an injustice when a game of this clairvoyance and magnitude deserves the right to be called and deemed a "Magus Magnum Opus" of the highest crafted accord in its sector of role playing games. I hope that the prequel of this game gets a release or translation for switch. Last but not least the same year upon the release of this game, I traveled to Japan and bought the soundtrack of this game from its native lands. Kudos and respect to all the underappreciated voice actors who mastered their roles in this game and to the master symphony orchestra for delivering the music in this game on a level of Amadeus.

I’m about 20 hours in and I haven’t felt the need to grind. Maybe it comes up later but all my characters are up to lvl and I’m currently going around completing all chapter 2. Maybe because I explore the mini caves areas around the first towns that I’m not running into grinding problems.

Sarah B. The ones I’ve found are all lvl 15+ recommended. By the end of chapter 1 all my characters were around lv15 +, my main being lvl 20. maybe it also was the way I managed my team as I explore. I’m always shifting my party around rather than sticking with a few, ensuring everyone has time to lvl.

I haven't found the need to grind either and I've already done most chapter 3 storylines. Here's the thing, even if you explore areas with enemies and bosses that are at a higher level than you, you can still use creative strategies and team comps to win. For example, I went into a lvl 50 shrine and beat the boss to unlock a special job when I was lvl 37 on average among all party members. I had to use a very customized strategy to beat the boss, but I did beat him 13 lvls behind the recommended. And I beat him by such a margin that I could have been as low as lvl 34 and still beat the Runelord.

@megbell766
@megbell766 6 жыл бұрын
DoughtyJ 1. It is fairly long. I have gotten to my first Chapter 2 and I am 19 hours in. 2. This game isn't too hard. You can use different characters and develop your own playstyle. Grinding levels isn't too tedious either.
@TheDaemonDD
@TheDaemonDD 6 жыл бұрын
1. Roughly 70-80 hours. Make of that what you will. 2. Very easy field combat with few exceptions and very challenging bosses of you don't use the break system well enough.
@alexperaza9475
@alexperaza9475 6 жыл бұрын
You can set your own difficulty by how you build your party. But the game offers plenty of exploration and side quests if you want to take things slow. There are also tons of caves throughout where you can go to level up. Once you get used to the weakness/shield-breaking mechanic and the boosting mechanic, it's all pretty straightforward. The length of the game depends on how many stories you follow. You're not obligated to follow every single story, but that option is there if you want it.

I am really loving this game and had a lot of fun so far. The art style is cool, the music is awesome and the battle and job system gives you many different possibilities to approach the different bosses. The only thing that does bother me a bit (I did not finish the game, so maybe this will change later) is that the different story lines don't feel connected at all. Like you said the characters don't really have a good motivation to help each other. It feels more like you are playing 8 different games, which take place in the same world and give you access to the same party.

to play this game without needing to grind: step 1: find all characters, step 2 do all chapter 1s and find all basic class shrines while your at it and run dual classes i recommend running Cryus and assign a Scholar to another step 3 do all chapter 2 step 4, do all chapter 3 now you are as far as i have gotten and i'm pushing level 50 on my main party without grinding, i run Merchant/Scholar, Scholar/Merchant, Huntress/Warrior, (Insert story required character here possibly subclassed as cleric)

Not sure if this is clear from this video, but you can also build up boost points by doing a regular attack. You don't have to skip turns. So for instance, you can do a straightforward attack with the warrior for three turns, break the enemy's shield, and then boost up your fourth attack to hit harder.
@anthonyalvarez5737

What he meant by skip is to not use ur battle point that turn, if u dont turn on the boost it doesnt matter wt u do once the next turn comes the character will have gained one more battle point

The way I have my team set up: Olberic: Hunter (Can have a 50% chance to attack twice and I believe he should have the strongest physical stat out of everyone else. It also allows him to use bows and axes) H’aanit: Warrior (She seems more physical based and having her as warrior could boost her attack power even more) Cyrus: Cleric (Can use healing, light along with fire, ice, and lightning. Plus this could boost his SP count allowing him to use more spells. Should also have high elemental attack so this should work well) Ophilia: Apothecary (Basically allows her to be the best healer in the game! Already has HIGH amount of SP and being able to heal and remove ailments, this was a no brainer) Tressa: Theif (Being a merchant should already give some sweet bonuses to the thief job. Plus using swords and daggers along with bows and spears should be a great coverage to her arsenal) Therion: Dancer (Being able to buff and debuff would make him a STRONG asset since he has pretty good evasion and speed. I don’t know the dancer’s entire moveset) Alfyn: Scholar (Apothecary already have a special support skill that can regain SP upon standard attacks, other than that...all the other positions are taken) Primrose: Merchant (Using rest, she can regain HP and SP and being able to use Spears and bows gives her more move pools. With rest, she can keep buffing and with Sidestep, it can help with evasion) I am having a hard time deciding after Ophilia, Olberic, and Therion. Therion works as a buffer and a de buffer since he can gain SP and HP and share SP as well as buff teams and de buff enemies. Olberic being the hunter means he can cause massive damage and more over. Ophilia being Apothecary, it would make her the best healer in the game. Everyone else varies to me.

Octopath Traveler is a great game. Don't let the graphics fool you. It has an incredible and interesting story and the gameplay is addictive. Also, the music is some of the best I've ever heard from a video game in a long while. If you are still uncertain just try out the demo on the eshop.

I absolutely love this game!!! It’s the old school jrpg I’ve been waiting for, for a very long time. I love the visuals, I love the voice acting, I love the characters, and I find myself whistling the battle themes when I’m not playing it. This is the best $60 I’ve spent in a long time.

It is a fun game, the graphics are cool, it is like a beautiful mix of old school and new school. The character storylines are interesting and each person has their own strengths and weaknesses. There is one big thing I dislike about this game. I’m not super far into the game but I got a good idea how the rest of the game will play out. There is no interactions between the characters. You meet one, they say I need your help and that’s it. When u reach the area of that persons storyline they do everything by themselves except the battles. There is no group of strangers becoming great friends during a great journey. From the outside looking in it looks like you got 8 different ways to play the game but really you can experience all 8 stories in one play through. Still a good game I just think it would be better if the stories all blended together and there was in-depth interactions between all the hero’s.

I think if anyone is judging the visuals from a first glance, if you were to show them the lighting and effects that they've managed to apply to these sprites, they would change their tune. I have been blown away on many occasions by the lighting/shadows/effects, and I think they are some of the best I have seen this year. Its really visually striking beyond what a screenshot can show someone and I think they've accomplished something pretty incredible here with the visuals. The fact that I've stopped and just took in scenery for a few minutes or keep stopping to snap screenshots just like I would in an impressive 3D world says it all.

I never had to grind because I love to explore the game and go places I ought not to go to get really powerful equipment. As long as you don't run away from battles within your party level there should never be a point where you are grinding imo

I'm hopeful that with how successful this game is looking, that they might be considering making a sequel or second game to this series. One that doesn't give us all new characters or single character stories, but a large, compelling story that allows for true interaction between the characters. I don't know if it would work at all, but I'd be interested to see what they could do. I've been having lots of fun with this game, I honestly have not disliked grinding to get to a stronger level because I find the battle system super fun! It's strategic, but at the same time deceptively simple which can be nice for newcomers and interesting for experienced players to learn better and faster strategies to get stronger and better. also.. H'aanit is best character~

Have had it for 2 days and I really love it. What a great game for the switch. I feel like a lot of people really dont know much about this game. I preordered the game, but I did not start playing day 1. I was finishing up Ys 8 when Octopath came out. Currently I am around 7~8 hours in, spent some time grinding when I got Primrose. Right now I am about to get Therion, and Ha'anit is my last character to recruit. (I get the characters along OCTOPATH order.) One thing I am not used to in this game... especially just finished Ys 8 is that I will always find the save point, happy that I can warp to it, then realize that I am not playing Ys 8.... Not a complaint, I just need to retrain my brain to forget what I learned in Ys 8.

Grinding is kinda easy, just get to a spot where danger is 5-7 levels higher than you and try to win one battle (specially if you have one character with lower level) then watch that XP bar at the end fly. You almost gain 2-3 levels for weaker members and 1 level for better ones. Also yes, cyrrus is powerful but you don't need to save mana because it regens everytime you level up. I always spend like crazy and I never had to use mana curing items unless I'm in a boss fight. The fact that you can go to harder level danger places is cool, I'm surprised you didn't mention that.

I like what Digital Foundry does but this really does confirm that their analysis effects how some people view games. Even if they believe the game looks good initially once DF releases an analysis it could change their opinion, which I just done understand. Proves some gamers are more wrapped up in numbers than what the gameplay and their own eyes tell them.

I’m currently 3 characters and about 6 hours in, and I haven’t seen any reason to grind. My characters have been well over the recommended level (although bosses are still challenging). Maybe I explore more than the average player, but all I’m doing is collecting the treasure chests in each story dungeon. I hope this doesn’t change as I get farther in, but truth is I don’t mind grinder either if it comes to it because I enjoy experimenting with battle strategies

Funny, I never had to or felt the need to grind. I think that a good substitute for grinding is exploration into optional areas, as you fight more enemies through there. Also I insisted on not using Cyrus’s Evasive Maneuvers, maybe that was it.

My team comp for anyone looking for ideas, haanit with warrior, cyrus with cleric without ophilia but anything i need with ophilia (ex apothecary for the snake charmer dude), primrose with merchant (cyrus getting breaking 20000with alephan against a boss needs bp), and whoever fourth u need for their story and i like to put them on either thief or dancer for debuffing the enemy or buffing cyrus and freeing up turns for primrose. Also, i say when u grind go for somewhere pretty hard for the most efficiency and dont be afraid to use items

I saw other reviews saying that you don't need to grind in this game and I'm 10 hours in and never had to grind and I feel actually overleved. So I don't know, maybe it depends on the person. If you go into dungeons underleved, you can gain level pretty quickly.

I thought the game was 900p playing on my 4K TV but even after finding out it is indeed 720p, it still holds up well. I do wonder if Nintendo releases the successor to the Switch if developers would go back and update games such as this one for a full resolution bump as well as framerate. Don't think a game like this would really look that much better but maybe cleaner. In any case, having fun. I do think I'm underleveled so I may have to grind which is really my least favorite thing to do in JRPGs. Also, the quest system is pretty bad. Details are vague and reminds me much of the Divinity games.

I'm curious what people mean when they say they're grinding in this game. To me, grinding means you are just content strictly for the gain of character progression - I haven't had to do that once with Octopath Traveler. I've gotten plenty of levels by simply playing through most of the chapters and exploring the random side dungeon.

14:20 personally I like to belive that its the ff9 mentality, there is tagline in ff9 that says "you dont need a reason to help someone" and the thing is that there are many people not only in jrpgs but probably media in general that kinda embody that mentality. Granted I still havent played the game so I can't really say for sure its just something I like to believe.

I'm in the chapters 2 for the story. It is fun and even tho it looks like a sup/ps1 rpg its really pretty. In some ways reminds me of xenogears on ps1. It is just really nice playing this game. It in a way is refreshing. No save the world plot just 8 people doing there own thing. It s really cool. This is a great game. The only thing i have to say i wish was a bit different is that i would like more interaction with the 8 characters however the reason i believe this does not happen is because there is the option of never picking up all if them. So i guess it would be hard to make that kind of option when you as a maker would have no idea the order they would be picked or even picked at all. So with that rant i believe all in all this maybe one of the most memorable rpgs in the past 8 years or so.

If this game was higher resolution than 720p, the pixels would look jagged and over pixelated on a 4k t.v In fact, if you set the T.V output resolution on the Switch system settings to 480p; all retro games look smoother and as they did on older monitors (new games and system menus look blah, but when you see the retro game you are playing, it will be a trip back in time).

My view of this game is it's a bit like Dungeons and Dragons mixed with a traditional jrpg. The characters don't really have the most compelling reason to be together, the stories are pretty separate, and you can interact with the world largely how you'd like to, all kinds like DnD.
