I hiked the short Boquillas Canyon Trail in Big Bend National Park. This is a great short and easy trail that will take you along the Mexican Border into the Boquillas Canyon. This is a perfect place to buy all types of souvenirs and if you are lucky...you will run into the guys who sell fresh made tamales!
enjoy

Great video, I live in Big Bend and have enjoyed many of those amazing tamales 🤤. Thank you for respecting the land and the people! The folks at Boquillas don’t get the recognition they deserve.

We didn't get any tamales when we went, but it was still pretty hot when we were there about 2 weeks after you. Also, if you get in the water for a bit and go around that corner, there is more trail with beautiful walls. Great video, Clint! 👍🏻

Oh man…no way!? You mean I missed part of the trail… man I wish I would have known. That canyon narrows up and is beautiful. I wish they’d extend it to the Marufo Vega trail. That area is beautiful.

Can't go wrong with Big Bend National Park. The tamales are a plus. We were in Presido a week ago, and yes, it felt hotter than the thermometer reading.

I know right!? What’s it with the lower desert? It felt great up in the Chisos. I kept looking at the temp from my truck and kept thinking no way!

Oh man! I’ve not been there when they’ve had tamales. I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled next time.

Definitely pick some up if you see them there! They were great…I ate all 6 before I left the parking lot.

I always see you truck at the Home Depot and Lee High School, or whatever it is they call it now. I've also seen it at GUMO once. Just wondering how many miles are on it? Happy Easter!

These people her in Boquillas are chilled…they’ve developed a real cohesive relationship there in Big Bend. They are good people…there’s not many ways to make a living there and this is a great way to support them.

NotLostNomad, if it was only 72 degrees, why did it feel so hot? I've day hiked in BBNP when it was 90, but only fairly easy stuff like the Lost Mine Trail because I'm now old and "slightly" overweight. Haha...

Haha! I’m right there with you! You know I have know clue why it felt so hot. My truck showed 72 degrees but I’d guess it was in the mid 90s. I had just finished a hike up in Pine Canyon prior to this hike and it felt amazing. I guess that’s what gets people in trouble with the lower desert hikes. Maybe something to do with the radiant heat coming off of those canyon walls like the Grand Canyon.

@@TheNotLostNomad I've been to Pine Canyon but never hiked it. It is a nice place, I should plan something there. It is a place I would camp, for sure, because it is pretty. I keep saying one day I will, but never have. I guess I can't figure out how to eat a NY Strip w/fries for dinner at the Kiva and camp in Pine Canyon at the same time. Maybe it felt so hot because you were wearing a hoodie with the hood up over a baseball cap. Just sayin'.

Haha, yeah that thing looks hot but it is so thin and breathable. It’s the best thing out there in terms of protection from heat and sun. Kuhl makes them and they aren’t cheap but totally worth the money.

Cool! I didn't know people sold tamales there sometimes. I've hiked around there, past the hot springs and such, but I've never seen tamale sellers. I have seen the wire scorpions, though. 😁 Were the men on the US side or the Mexico side? I've seen a guy with a burro or horse (I think) sitting under a tree on the Mexico side a lot, right across the river from the "illegal" souvenirs. I figured he just came across the river every so often to collect the money.

I also have not run into anyone selling tamales there on the US side. I've definitely enjoyed a meal on the other side (there are bigger and more developed hot springs on the Boquillas side, believe it or not!) and as far as which side anyone was on, the river is so low and the horses and cattle sometimes have to be shuttled back by their counterparts. To clarify, from the small town of Boquillas it is a long hard ride to any nearby actual towns of Mexico. In other words, even though even the rangers know (and blatantly permit) our neighbors to cross over to collect the money (and to leave all the "illegal" souvenirs) it is partly because the people who live in that area on both sides of the border generally know one another like the neighbors who they are. Boquillas even has a fire crew (Los Diablos) who help out whenever there are any fires to put out in the area. If you would like to see an unusual perspective of just how far "across the border" the town is (it isn't very far at all), here's a clip that started as a rattlesnake video but ended by showing just where that little speck of a town is from the paved park road on our side of the border: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5XJpYGbnseUkNE

@@SpiritualDevil well, Santa Elena where Pablo Acosta was killed by the FBI/DEA, I mean, Mexico authorities, is just across the river from BBNP. Although it is a bit further west than Boquillas, granted. Very remote, no easy way in from Mexico. But from the US side, not so hard. He didn't count on that which is one reason why he hid out there.

@@SpiritualDevil "the people who live in that area on both sides of the border generally know one another like the neighbors who they are." Yes, I believe it. Have you read the book Death in Big Bend? I highly recommend it! It details the stories of people who have died in BBNP, some by their own failures, some by murder. It is a very good book. Your local library might have it. It talks about Mexicans coming over to the US to NPS Rangers to report stuff and how they knew each other.

@@dannylgriffin I got to hear the full Pablo Acosta account from his widow (who lives on this side) with quite a few relevant participants in that era on hand not too long ago.
